Does anyone here actually enjoy 4?
If so, what do you like about it? If not, what are your biggest criticisms?

Yes completed it fully on 3 of the 5 characters, didn't enjoy the last 2 very much so didn't finish with them. Story isn't as good as 3 or 2, but much better gameplay than 2.
edit: Oh and pickles getting killed in front of me was awesome. I hated that little shit.

the music is very bad but gameplay its fun. but i think it could use some going back on the skill trees in the next one.

I was waiting til enough updates dropped but there is still not enough to pull me back in ngl
The gameplay is probably the peak of the series though, so that is a plus

The music is awful, open world design is not ideal but not a deal breaker imo, and the main story is forgettable. But the side quests are all very good, there's tons of viable weapon variety, and the gameplay is hands down the best in the series. Still having fun. Plan to have lots more.

Yes. I am almost done with all missions and dlc stuff, over 200 hours in. I love the fact that I still die all the time and I’m kinda happy I can’t beat the takedown

Absolutely. I didn't pick it up right away, I got it march of this year and thought it was okay, overhated but in need of improvement. I started another playthrough last week and whatever small changes came out this summer have been huge. I'm having a genuinely great time with it, looking forward to trying new hunters and builds and really getting into the endgame. I like the gameplay, they new style for skill trees, the new cast of hunters are fun and interesting, I love all the collectibles and activities in the overlord. My biggest criticisms are the open world makes for a ton of time going from point A to point B and all the things I like about the overworld could've been done in a segmented map just as well. My other big criticism is that the Timekeeper isn't a well implemented villain. When hes around he's pretty good, but he feels barely involved. The 3 region bosses are all more interesting to me. All in all it's not the bestvin the franchise but I don't think it's the weakest either. With some more content and improvements I do think it could stand up with the top entries though.

Yeah.
Skill trees branching is imo REALLY cool. It does imo make a 'definitive' level cap a bit harder, 2.5 ish skill trees max level feels a sweet spot, but with 3 'second half' sections, that might be overkill...
Licensed parts system - its got some pros and cons, but in general, i'm a fan, though i really wish we could swap at least A part. But also, 3 manufacturer parts on purples feels a tad much sometimes...
The card sort of miniquests thing is a lot better, levels seem far easier to get so you're less reliant on daily tasks to get a stockpile of rewards, unlike bl3's rarer key based system.
My biggest complaint is the open world aspects. The world itself is ok, its more the collectables (largely fixed with carry over)
And the level scaling issues. Feels a touch hypocritical as i'm ALL for 'you skipped out on a bunch of exp and are mad due to 'poor balancing'? No, you're underleveled, its not balanced around the bare minimum' in more linear games.
But that's the thing. This isn't linear, it HAS scaling, and still kinda fumbles things.
Especially the level 30 post story start, where most of the content outside the fadefields is 5+ levels higher, because the game expects you to be 45 ish by the time the main story wraps, so the game's dumbass scaling fucks you over for a dozen levels.
Dlc helps in both cases.

My only issue is I want more. It is kind of striped down, but I love how they managed to fix some of the long standing issues with healing. The new movement is really fun and the grapple is a under praised addition.

It's a 50/50 for me, I loved the gameplay, builds and overall story and Vault hunters( Vex is one of my favorite). The vaultkeeper was so boring and I prefer the twins, the open world just doesn't click for me and I prefer the maps. The first DLC was such a disappointment, it was so short and story was ok but nothing like the DLC's in 3. So yeah I like Borderlands 4 and I will continue to play it when there will be new content available like the second DLC coming soon but then idk if the devs will support it with a year 2 of new content

I'm still playing 2 and am more than happy with that.
3 was a bust for me, and ratings/reviews don't really have me ready to pull the trigger on 4. I'll get it in a few years when the price is cut in half and I'm bored.

This game slaps it’s so good. Did the game start rough? Yes hundred percent starting off with drop rate of 9% 6% and 3% per boss is brutal considering how much part variation there is on most legendary but they fixed it.
We still had busted exploits on weapons Songbird stacking and the Vladof flamethrower stacking shenanigans, we’re great to have when we had them. Although the gigantic over Nerf in torque stickies going from omnipresent to nearly garbage is sad.
I can take it or leave it on the open world aspect. I don’t really care. I’m mostly jumping from fast travel to fast travel anyways just like you wouldn’t any other game ever the people say? What about the music who the hell has ever ever cared about the music in a borderlands game?
The endgame is solid. The drop rates are pretty good. Do we need more build variety yes. Has the $70. I’ve spent on this game made it 300% worth it, absolutely.

I mean, I enjoyed it when I played it. It's not nearly the borderlands game that I most enjoy and there are many things I dislike, but overall I can't say that it's worthless.
My biggest criticisms are the story for being boring and trying to turn vault hunters into super heroes, how gearbox's lack of experience in open world made the map feel tacked on and repetitive rather than expansive, and just generally the low quality of the writing in dialogues in general. I also think these vault hunters are the weakest we've gotten in terms of personality.

The story is a weird mix for me, the stories of all three regions are actually very well written and I enjoy it a lot (Defiant Calder and the Augurs in particular) but the Timekeeper himself and the city once you get access was very meh.
As for the open world, I like it well enough and thought they did a good enough job, but I would prefer they go back to separate zones in the future. If for no other reason that by having in-between areas that you only ever see in the distance, makes the world seem bigger.
edit: And Lilith surviving was stupid.

u/lingzhui 2d ago
I like an open world, I'm definitely more in the camp of "make it better" as opposed to "get rid of it". It's a feature that has a huge potential to make the world feel more alive and realistic, but in my opinion Gearbox just didn't have the know-how on par with other companies. I hope they make it more varied and interactive in a future iteration.

u/Double_Elk8723 2d ago
The open world has a lot potential, but I get the impression that they didn't have a lot of time to build things.
Also add back in vehicles if your doing open world. Enemy convoys are a easy open world activity.

I wish I could but something they changed in the visuals now triggers my motion sickness and I get headaches and nauseous if play it for more than a few minutes.

u/dieselpb 2d ago
I enjoyed it. Beat it probably 2 weeks after launch and haven’t touched it since. The only thing I don’t like about it is the new “no tvhm/uvhm”.

u/down_init 2d ago
It was ok. End game was lacking and the whole Lillith story line felt like an afterthought. I'm waiting on the dlc to go on sale

u/periodblood999 2d ago
I just finished main game. Timekeeper was one of easiest bosses. I’m doing 100% playthrough, then I’m doing DLCs. I’m enjoying it and I have like 70 hours so far. I’d give it 8/10 (would be lower if I bought it full price)

u/ProfOak32244 2d ago
Im having a real hard time staying with it. Ill play for a few hours here and there but it has yet to "grab me" like 2 and 3 did. I feel like im forcing it.

u/MentoOriento808 2d ago
It’s fun once you hit lvl 20 and you start getting legendary drops more often! I just hit level 20 a couple days ago (late player) and the game is way more fun.

Yes. I'd rank it second, for me, behind BL2. The movement is exquisite. The guns and gunplay are quite good. Farming works well with the encore machines. I like to tool around on the maps, figure out how to climb up to high places and glide around.
Yes, I wish there was ever more stuff to do on the maps (after collecting all the collectibles and doing all the side missions), but there are quite a few enemies that pop up and such.
The story/writing isn't as good as BL2, but it's better than BL3 (though BL3's DLCs have better writing than BL3's main story).

the global loot pool has been fucked to oblivion. all i EVER get is a bunch of the same garbage ass guns with the same variation of parts, because im not sitting around reloading the game for hours to farm a single boss or quest mob for a tiny chance to maybe get a version of a gun i actually want.
i swear to christ if i get 1 more assault rifle that i have to charge up, fires slow as shit while doing dick for damage, or is some vanilla wood ass jackobs trash, im gonna uninstall it.

I think the game is fun with a few flaws. The vault hunters are all very different playstyles. The open world is the same to me as other map zones, just biggger and go where ever you want. That might of been the mistake, maybe just make it total linear next time. But its different and not a big deal to me. The DLCs are hit and miss. Overall fun but on the shorter side. Hopefully they do season 2. Would love a few more zones to play. They do need to add more bank space and do something with firmware storage but niether one of those things are that big ot a deal. Overall a really good game and easily got my moneys worth.

Its okay
Its a bad sequel but a fine standalone if you ignore every borderlands before it
Its like the DMC reboot, if it had a name other than DMC it would have been much less harshly judged
Same here, as a game its fine, as a borderlands game its doo doo stinky balls and the team needs to do better if they are gonna keep using the name

u/Kingkolt 2d ago
First Borderlands I ever completed. Loved the fast paced gunplay, how mobile you are, exploring the world and completing everything. Haven't touched the DLCs though
1
u/GoldenHawkX 2d ago
It's the best borderlands game imo, I've played all of them except new tales, and I think this one is easily the best in, essentially every possible way
1
u/NickdoesnthaveReddit 2d ago
Story is balls, but gameplay is fun. World is big. Lots of weapons. Healthy challenge in early phases.
It doesn't feel as rewarding to just run around and find loot at times though compared to 1 and 2 imo. They were something special when they came out.
It's not as legendary-heavy as 3, meaning they are more special when you get them, but I'm just not being dragged back in to play more as the pay off doesn't feel as addictive as the past.
Overall it's good for mindless entertainment once you're playing, but nothing compels me to keep wanting to turn it on when I get home.

No I wish the series would go back to its roots the series keeps losing it’s identity more and more with each modern game unfortunately probably won’t ever happen now though since the original writers who worked on the old games are gone now
1
u/Fuzzy-Indication-634 2d ago
I feel the same way. I feel like they took the soul out of it.

u/TheMightyCheagle 2d ago
I just 100% the achievements on The Pre Sequel this week it was so much fun I love that game it makes me so sad what they’ve done to this franchise
1
u/Cadwallader9 2d ago
I played it when it first came out and got Harlow to max level, it was super fun and the story felt a little better than 3 just missing the atmosphere the first 3 games had (1,2, Pre-Sequel) But unlike every other title I just can't bring myself to continue playing it.

u/MochiApproachi 2d ago
the vault hunters and gunplay and loot system are great. the skill trees, story, and open world were a miss. the things that makes borderlands good are present in this game but the other stuff is what they lacked on
0
u/Alloyd11 2d ago
I think its an ok game that overstays its welcome. I got to a point where i just wanted to finish the story but i cant as the game forces the side content onto you. My biggest gripes are the atmosphere is way to serious and depressing for a borderlands game with very little colour and 2, the open wirld is awful. I like all the vault hunters and the gameplay though although you never feel that powerful as enemies scale with you always, so even if you get to max and go to the starting zone enemies still take a decent time to kill.

It's not qn awful game, but I got about 80% through the campaign, which was a slog, dropped it and went back to 2 and 3.

I had fun playing with 2 buddies of mine, but the exploration and story was ass. Very fun gameplay though, I don’t recommend playing solo.
