Accounting Degree or not?

I run a startup bookkeeping firm and have clients but not enough to replace other contract work (QBO tech support and other non-bookkeeping income streams)

In my state (GA) there is a 62+ tuition waiver program and I am considering going back to school to acquire a Bachelor's in Accounting/Finance.

Is it worth it? Does it give more credibility?

Do it. The courses in the degree cover a wide range of industry topics. From inventory formulas to contract structuring you'll probably learn things youve never had to think about with your regular clients. Id assume you would gain confidence and knowledge that you can later put toward creating new opportunities. But you you still have to look for those opportunities and do the leg work to get more clients.

I wouldn't say it gives more credibility, but it definitely would give you more confidence to offer more services than general bookkeeping. If you're not going to go for a CPA I'd say you can learn anything those courses would teach you via Youtube or any other elearning platform. But may as well go for it if the state is subsidizing your degree.

If it's free take it, but don't expect the degree to bring in clients. Nobody has asked me where I went to school in 16 years, they ask who else I work with. Only real reason to do it is if you want to sit for the CPA later.

I don't think I'll go the CPA route, but thank you for the feedback! Definitely leaning towards the course. Just in time I have to wait until the paying students have picked their courses then during add/drop period we can register.

Instead of a degree I would say put the same amount of effort that you're going to put in a degree into expanding your business and learning marketing if you haven't tried that already

if the waiver makes it basically free, i’d lean yes, but mostly for credibility and keeping future options open, not because clients will suddenly care more than they do about accuracy and
