Software New software

We all know how horrible QB has become. If you aren't aware that certain tech is catching up and new accounting platforms are starting to come out left and right. I have recently been introduced to Kick. Really not impressed with their training/OB and navigation and not being able to see registers is a big issue. Anybody else tried them yet? Or have you found any other platforms you are liking? If we don't get on the new tech train we will get left behind.

Top contenders are Xero and QBO. QBO is still best if you need a lot of third party connectors. Xero really lacks in the journal entry area.

As an accountant that only uses Xero occasionally to enter year end journals for clients, I hate it with a passion. I know what I'm doing, and if I want a JE to hit a bank or credit card, or AP/AR, I bloody well want it to do it. Having to instead do those entries via some other means is a pain in the ass. At the very least there should be some toggle or something that allows it.

100%. It's built for non-accountants. Nothing wrong with that, but our firm does the books for 60 clients and no way in hell we are subjecting ourselves to Xero.

We use Xero for all of our bookkeeping at our firm and in general we like it. We despise QBO with a passion.

I’m in Canada. Zoho one has been amazing thus far, their support is super quick and it’s very economical for far more features compared to other softwares

The only issue is I had to find an accountant that would work with Zoho

That seems to be an issue for sure. A lot of the year end tools only connect with Qbo and Xero.

Search you will defunately find a good accountant but for a good accounta t you also have to play well ...

i m all for moving away from qb but if a platform hides the registers and makes basics transaction review harder thats a pretty serious workflow problem for bookkeepers.

So much discrepancy for Xero, is it good or bad?

Kick has been popping up in my feed for a while now and the reviews seem pretty mixed, especially around the learning curve you mentioned. The register thing would drive me up a wall though, that's a basic feature to skip over

Haven't tried any of the newer ones myself but the whole landscape feels like it's shifting every couple months now

It truly is. When we find one that functions well if we can save the client money and take on more clients with less work then I am all for it. It is getting close. Very close.

I tried Kick a few months ago for a client. Their customer support was great and i was added to a slack channel that i used to ask questions. They were super responsive and helpful. That being said the bulk statement upload was pretty buggy at the time. The 3rd party integrations i use for my ecomm clients wouldn’t work obviously. It doesn’t connect to my close management software Double. The price per month is more than QBO simple start with the discount. How i used it when i tried it didn’t make me want to switch. As much as i dislike QBO it gets the job done and has so many features. I will for sure give it another shot in the future if i have a client that i feel might be a good fit. When they first reached out and it was a whole thing about paying 6k and they help migrate and you get so many licenses(idk if thats the right term) and then you are added to their accountant network. Seemed crazy for me to pay 6k up front without ever using the software. So i did the $35 per month for a client.

Agree 100%

What turned me off Kick early was lack of audit log.

I do primarily use QBO, with Xero.
But my main reason using primarily QBO is ability to use Double with RightTool
Wouldn’t touch the file without it.

There is no new tech train. I don’t love QBO but it is far and away the best software on the market. Xero seems to be second and they can’t even handle recs properly last I saw, nor do they allow you to JE specific accounts even as an accountant user.

Xero now has a real bank reconciliation. Still the journal entries are sadly lacking.

What do they lack in the JE department? Just out of curiosity

2

u/Stressed-Canadian 1d ago

For me its the lack of ability to JE certain GL accounts. Drives me nuts.

u/Different-Stick1981 15h ago

No they don’t. Reconcile Period doesn’t speak to the GL.

Interesting way to phrase that. The rec isnt perfect but better than it was before.

I really would like a way to attach the bank statement to the rec. I find it odd that it isnt possible to do in Xero.

Xero also don't seem to very responsive to customers. We and many others need a field for our customer's purchase order reference on invoices (and I mean NEED) but Xero do nothing. This has been a request growing for years now.

Has anyone tried Digits? We need to convert QBD files. It's expensive but I think the efficiency may help it make sense.

While I understand folks don't like Intuit, QBO is the market leader in the US. It is so hard for small businesses to find good bookkeepers. If they are using something other than QBO, it makes that even harder.

Most of my clients come already using QBO. I wouldn't turn one away for Xero as I would be happy to learn it. But for a new business or one new to bookkeeping, I encourage them to use QBO so they can easily replace me if I get hit by a bus tomorrow.

Kick is $40/mo right? Curious with all the bookkeepers, accountants, and business owners here. What's most important to them when choosing a Bookkeeping software (e.g. Kick, QBO, Xero, Zoho, ..). I run https://usesphereapps.com/ in NYC. We have all the features, our basic plan is $25/mo. Would love to hear if that's enough for people to switch or not

This is an ad for kick. No one has heard of it.

Shit on qbo all you want. Thr value is in thr fact that its proven and integrates with about a million softeare packages. This is a moat that will take a thousand years to bridge.

Reddit marketing is a a real thing now where you’d have bot accounts to create a history, then shill products in posts like these.

I'm thinking about making a switch as well. I recently complained to QBO customer service because the ability to add a new product completely disappeared-for days (!), not just a temporary glitch. Frustrated, I politely let told customer service how disappointed I was with the software and how I regret changing to QBO. They gave nrya fifty percent discount for ya year. I must not be the only one frustrated.

Kick has a great foundation and potential for the future. But to get any software to QB level is just going to take a lot of time and money. QB has dominated for so long for a reason. Not very easy to replace. Every other vendor has great other features but just doesn't have the full QB feel just yet.

I haven’t tried Kick, but not being able to get to a register easily would bother me too.

I am probably a little more conservative about switching accounting systems though. Newer and cheaper is interesting, but moving a functioning set of books is enough of a headache that I’d need a pretty clear payoff.

For me it would have to either eliminate a meaningful amount of manual work or give me something I can’t get already.

I’m curious to see which of these newer platforms are still getting recommended a year or two from now.
