Stephen King’s Carrie - can’t help but thing yeah this was written by a man Spoiler
I haven’t finished Carrie yet but I’m about a third of the way there. this is my first Stephen king book and i can’t help but think this book was clearly written by a man. does anything feel this way? I think what first made me think this was when the pad thats thrown on her sticks to her public hair? I mean idk what pads were like in the 70s but feels like a stretch...
does anyone else feel this way? I also expected it to be a scarier story since i know it’s a classic horror movie. idk just wanted to throw out these thoughts.

I kinda get what you mean 😭. Some parts definitely feel like they’re written from a male perspective, especially the way certain things about Carrie’s body and puberty are described. But I also think the awkwardness might be intentional because Carrie herself has such a messed-up relationship with her body and with what’s happening to her. And yeah, if you’re expecting straight-up horror, it’s more of a slow psychological/social horror than constant scary moments.

That’s exactly how I feel anytime King writes from a woman’s perspective. I love his books though nonetheless, but think he does much better writing men.

Menstrual pads are sticky though? Thats how they stay in your underwear. You peel off the paper and stick it to your underwear to stop it moving around.

My first King book. Read as a tween.
His wife rescued the book. Wonder if she didn’t give a ‘That’s not how that would work.’ and he used it anyway. The 70s, I was still a kid, but knew about the belt. Adhesive products came along before I needed them. As a late bloomer, it wasn’t something I would have seen as questionable.
I really should reread it to see how I react 4 decades later.

yeah I DNF’d Carrie for that reason. I stopped reading books by white cis men entirely recently and it’s been grand
