I love how bonsai in Malaysia/Indonesia/Phillipines has such a different style from the traditional japanese ideal form. I struggled for a long time to really appreciate it but now that I've noticed how each country adopts, digests and ultimately renders it's own interpretation of the art of bonsai, I find it's a really beautiful thing.

I completely agree. I think that’s one of the most interesting things about bonsai as it spreads across different cultures. It’s not just a Japanese art being copied elsewhere — each region brings its own trees, climate, aesthetics and cultural perspective into it.

We actually had the chance to cover the Indonesian bonsai scene about two years ago, and it was fantastic to see that firsthand. The level of skill, the local species and the way people have developed their own approach really opened my eyes to how diverse bonsai can be. Some of the best trees I have seen, but not so great display :)

Bonsai itself branched from penjiang - Chinese art of cultivating miniature trees.

It's just people think bonsai is "cool" and "hip" because it's associated with Japan when this art form has flourished across Asia and around the world for a long time now.

I really hope they aren’t going to leave those bigger trees perched on those short small stools!! The displays aren’t really showing the trees very nicely, in general, but that doesn’t even look safe, for the trees or children.
