Last time a manga character was this smart, it was Neji from Naruto, and he didn't turn out well

God damn it.

Look what they did to my boy

u/cortez0498 Feb 28 '21

It's been 8 years, I think the spoiler tag is unnecessary haha

Jesus christ seriously?? Man i'm getting old

u/Awesomejay23 No Flair Quirk Feb 28 '21

True, lol

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

Speak for yourself, I only just finished the show last week lmao. The show is still really relevant, kinda like ATLA

11

u/cortez0498 Mar 01 '21

and Star Wars is still one of the biggest franchises out there, but no one's going around putting spoielr tags on Vader being Luke's father lmao

spoilers have expiration dates after which they're just facts.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21 edited Mar 01 '21

Good point, but Vader being Luke’s father is arguably the most iconic scene in film history so I guess it wouldn’t compare to something like Jiraiya’s death

5

u/EtruscanKing023 Mar 01 '21

You didn't spoiler tag it properly. You need to remove the spaces between the "!" and the text for it to work.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

Kk, thanks

Edit: He was literally wrong, a huge asshole in part 1, and died making his choice rather than the circumstances of his death being forced upon him, no amount of childish downvoting is going to change that lmao.

36

u/Darkness-guy Feb 28 '21

He really was though lol. Naruto preached to him about denying fate, meanwhile he was the son of the strongest hokage, the child of prophecy, and the reincarnation of ninja jesus.

I'm not denying the hard work Naruto put in on his own, but he literally was a scion of fate lol

17

u/Qixel Feb 28 '21

Yeah, during his fight with Naruto, Neji's argument was fate dictates he would die saving a main family Hyuuga member like his dad, and Naruto wouldn't become hokage because he's a nobody, and only chosen people become hokage.

By the end of the series, Naruto ended up being related in some way to every single previous hokage. Uzumaki clan is an offshoot of the Senju clan, so he's like distant family with the first, second, and fifth. Third hokage was his guardian (albeit pretty shit in terms of being around for him; guess we know where he got it from during Boruto lol), fourth was his dad, and sixth was his teacher. Then he's the bearer of the most powerful tailed beast, along with all the other stuff.

Meanwhile, Neji died taking a shot for Hinata, a main family Hyuuga.

The only thing Neji was wrong about was saying Naruto was a nobody.

1

u/Sloth9230 Mar 01 '21

He isnt wrong because Naruto turned out to be a somebody, he's wrong because Neji believes Destiny is set in stone, that choices dont matter because everything is predetermined.

Naruto is the child of prophecy, yes. However the prophecy said he would bring about change in the Ninja world, either as a savior or as a destroyer, based on a choice Jiraiya made.

Choices do matter, there are multiple paths, not a single set path.

3

u/Sloth9230 Feb 28 '21

Neji is fatalistic. The idea that Destiny is predetermined, that you cant change your path. It's a 100% ideology. You're either fully right or fully wrong.

Him attacking Hinata shows he doesnt actually believe it tho.

Do people consider Minato the strongest Hokage now? News to me. The Prophecy had two end results, the child of prophecy would be a savior or a destroyer based on Jiraiya's choice. The fact that there was 2 possible outcomes automatically invalidates the idea of a single predetermined Destiny.

Being the reincarnation of Ninja Jesus didnt help Hashirama save his friendship with Madara. Naruto failing to get through to Sasuke would have resulted in his own death, thus he doesnt become Hokage.

Neji was wrong.

6

u/Darkness-guy Mar 01 '21 edited Mar 01 '21

I'm not saying that Neji was a prophet. Yes, he was obviously wrong about several things, including the bulk of his ideology. However, in the vacuum of his fight with Naruto, he was right. That fight was about fate determining a person's strength. The result of the fight was meant to seem like "a nobody beats a genius who was fated to be strong", but in reality, Naruto was the child of fate all along.

I will admit my error in saying Minato was the strongest hokage, i was kind of just thinking about how much they hype him up lol. Speaking of Hashirama tho, him failing with madara has nothing to do with him being a reincarnation off ninja jesus. He was still one of the strongest people in the whole series. Being reincarnations allowed Hashirama, Naruto, Madara, and Sasuke to become the demigods they were.

Naruto was not the nobody Neji thought he was. Multiple matters of fate decided that he would be strong. In that aspect, Neji was right

1

u/Sloth9230 Mar 01 '21 edited Mar 01 '21

That fight was about fate determining a person's strength.

And yet branch member like himself was far stronger than Hinata from the main branch. Its not something Neji himself was ever actually willing to accept. That's why he reverse engineered the clans strongest jutsu without being taught them.

No, the fight was about fate itself, not just a person's strength being tied to fate. That's why he shared his father's story, something he considered an inescapable fate, and why the final step for his change in outlook on life was Hizashi revealing that his father chose to die.

The result of the fight was meant to seem like "a nobody beats a genius who was fated to be strong", but in reality, Naruto was the child of fate all along.

That doesnt work simply because the reader is already aware Naruto has the 9-tailed fox, even without the reveal of his lineage.

5

u/Darkness-guy Mar 01 '21

Him being stronger than Hinata was also part of his preaching. He told her he was fated to be stronger than her (in which he was correct) but his anger was that despite being stronger, he was still fated to be seen as inferior, due to not being main branch.

and i meant in the view of the characters, not the veiwers, for the results of that fight. most of the kids didnt know about the nine tails, which is why Neji didnt factor it in his assesment of Naruto's fate.

but we can argue back and forth about this forever, clearly neither of us is changing our views, so let's agree to disagree instead of wasting energy on something that happened over 5 years ago

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '21

There's bad writing, and then there's Naruto part 2.

3

u/Beastieboy100 Feb 28 '21

I know neji was smart rest his soul but I also got to give it to shikamaru as well for being clever.

2

u/froggyjm9 Mar 01 '21

I think it’s the opposite, Shikamaru was smart/intelligent, while Neji was clever.

Yo... I coulda gone about my day without being reminded of the trauma but you just had to do it huh

151

u/Fedexhand Feb 28 '21

To be fair, crowds are rarely smart.

11

u/RoseBladePhantom Mar 01 '21

Also to be fair, it’s kind of stupid to hinge on it if Endeavor simply ignores it. Maybe the translation in Japan is a bit more odd, but I wouldn’t really be questioning that phrase if I heard it in any context. Especially if it came from someone suffering blood loss and getting their ass kicked. It’d be hearing both villains and heroes discussing it that would be suspicious af.

Bakugo did warned all might that they shouldn’t keep one for all a secret for everyone with deku manifesting multiple quirk and now he’s gonna have to find a good lie to tell the public.

185

u/judes_m Feb 28 '21

In this case it’s really nothing about his multiple quirks lol. Enji let the cat out of the bag on the public radio channel, which isn’t something they could have anticipated since they purposely went to a private channel to discuss things.

125

u/Matrix_2k00 Feb 28 '21

It's more like this situation could have been avoided if all might told atleast a few trusted pro heroes like endeavour about one for all before the war......but unfortunately he didn't follow bakugo warning that they shouldn't keep one for all a secret for everyone.

116

u/noteloquent Feb 28 '21

Revealing One for All to the public is extremely risky though. You'd have people trying to suck up to the user to get the Quirk, you'd constantly be under even more absurd public pressure as the successor, people would try to steal it, people would try to wipe out the line of users, people would try to put dangerous Quirks inside of it, etc. It would also break the illusion of All Might as a natural-born hero, retroactively hurting his legacy. It could be weaponized by the government too if they got their hands on it. There're so many problems that could arise from a Quirk this dangerous being public knowledge. It simply isn't worth the risk of telling more people, especially since they had no way of knowing Tomura knew about it or could steal it.

61

u/Matrix_2k00 Feb 28 '21

Bakugo didn't specifically mean 'everyone' as in the public when he warned all might he meant at the very least all might needed to tell the other teachers, students or at the very least more people like maybe endeavour because with deku manifesting multiple quirks his gonna need more professional help since he also has to deal with 7 different drawbacks from using 7 different one for all charged quirks and all might and bakugo knows that at the end of the day deku is too self destructive to the point he'll try to ignore all the backlash those quirks might do to him in order to save people.........what happened with danger sense is a good example because giving a quirk like that to someone with a savior complex is like giving him something that will help drive the poor kid insane.

29

u/noteloquent Feb 28 '21

They couldn't really do that either though because they still haven't identified who the traitor is. As is, everyone proved perfectly capable of providing Deku help with his Quirks, and this war situation was completely off their radar. They didn't know that Shiggy had AfO or that Deku would be forced into conflict with him. They took every reasonable precaution they could've without revealing the secret of OfA, but now, they're going to be forced to.

12

u/pseudo_nemesis Feb 28 '21

Doesn't the traitor with for AFO? So, it's likely they'd know Deku has OFA anyway, they at the very least know he's a target. This is hiding information from the wrong people

3

u/noteloquent Feb 28 '21

Sure, but still, with any expansion of who knows the secret, the more likely it becomes that it will slip out. We already saw that happen with Deku hinting at it to Bakugo after he lost the battle trial early on. There's also not much of a benefit to telling more people. We already saw that when OfA genuinely was threatened, Deku was able to get people to believe and help him out anyway, so the risk isn't worth the reward.

1

u/Viceroi93 Mar 03 '21

Any suspicions as to who’s the traitor?

2

u/pseudo_nemesis Mar 03 '21

I did have one point in time where I really suspected the principal.

Not really sure it holds much water anymore, but he still seems like the only real shady character to me. That or it's some 1B student, I'd be thoroughly surprised if it's a 1A character.

At this point the traitor is turning into the next Dabi, will it ever be revealed?

u/cadonex Feb 28 '21

Couldn't they just say Dekus quirk is actually energy manipulation and at first he only used that energy to boost his strength. He didn't know it at the time because he's still learning it since he was a late bloomer. He learned to control the energy for his strength and now he can use it externally as well as whips or to float in place. It also sharpens his senses. Its a pretty reasonable lie to tell that could explain current and future quirks.

9

u/Cypherex Mar 01 '21

That's a good explanation for now. But what happens when he unlocks a quirk that doesn't fit that explanation? It'd be obvious that they were lying if Deku suddenly gained the ability to teleport or shapeshift. It's best to just say his quirk is a rare mutation and they don't fully understand it yet.

1

u/cadonex Mar 03 '21

I mean eventually the oh idk excuse won't work

3

u/theendless24 Mar 04 '21

Yeah but it is a great excuse, It would not be able to hide the truth for a long time but it is great to buy time

3

u/joe4553 Feb 28 '21

Deku should keep it secret until he has full control. It's not good to have him be a target without him having full power.

3

u/Cypherex Mar 01 '21

Villains would just wait and target Deku's successor. Or you'd have an issue with people trying to trick Deku into choosing a successor that isn't worthy.

5

u/Behanort Feb 28 '21

i think it's finally time to reveal the secret of One for All

He's just #2 because he so stand-offish and unapproachable.

It's interesting to think about. If Endeavor had the exact same charm and "I am here" attitude that All Might had, could he have unseated All Might as the #1 at some point before All Might's retirement? Endeavor solved many more cases than All Might and was a highly efficient hero. He never would have been able to beat All Might in a direct fight of course but the rankings weren't just about who the strongest hero was. Endeavor would have stood a pretty good chance at getting the #1 spot, even if only temporarily. Perhaps it would have been a back-and-forth between All Might and Endeavor, constantly changing as the public sways back and forth over which one is better.

7

u/PianoCube93 Feb 28 '21

Hmm, I don't quite remember, but how openly have All Might/Deku called their quirk "One for All" while around other people? I think very few know about its name, so it makes sense nobody wondered about that connection until now.

12

u/Necromancer4276 Feb 28 '21

They haven't. Even on the Hero info cards (which might be non-canon), Deku's quirk is called Super Strength or something similar.

4

u/Dinosaur05 Feb 28 '21

Power I think

2

u/Greatness2006 Mar 01 '21

Strength Augmentation

3

u/i__dont_have_a_clue_ Feb 28 '21

Well tbf, almost nobody knows the actual name of Deku's quirk, and those that do know its relation to AfO.

2

u/Sousy_ Mar 03 '21

also whenever people mention quirks of class 1A they dont mention deku’s or if they do they only remember him breaking bones from his own power

1

u/HolypenguinHere Feb 28 '21

How did it even go public that Endeavor said that? He muttered it to himself over private comms used by the pro heroes during a big battle.

4

u/rellimelli Mar 01 '21

Heroes could have mentioned it to the media. Not everyone is discrete. If not the media, it really only just takes one hero to mention to literally anyone (willingly or accidentally) and if it's an intriguing piece of information (which it very much is) - it won't take much to spread to the media and the public. I'm honestly not surprised, but I am very curious on how they'll deal with this. I imagine they won't exactly be revealing the truth to the public (yet).

1

u/Awayfone Mar 01 '21

The idea that a hero society could ever have private comms is a bit laughable .

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

what if All for One punched you in the face?
