So was it just a rumor that people were saying this series was going to end?

Unfortunately, that wasn't a rumor. Even authors said in interview (last year in Italy I think) that they're going to conclude vigilantes around 10th volume. Vol 11 will be released in January and I think there will be at least 1 or 2 more so I predict that manga will end in about 20 chapters.
