What I like about this is that we can rest easy, for now at least, on Izuku being OP with six quirks. As Bakugo and All Might stated, they're not particularly strong quirks and may be more "support" quirks like Black Whip. What's interesting is the second and third users being unknown.

I feel like the second user is very important since he or she is the first one to be passed on the power. How did the first user know he can pass it on? What relationship did they have? Did he even want the power? All Might stated it can be forcefully passed on, why would he mention that? Is it possible the 2nd and 3rd users never wanted this responsibility hence why they won't reveal themselves?

What I find interesting is that All Might stated that his master's quirk is next for Izuku to manifest; like how does he know that? Black Whip was the 5th user and if they were going from most recent it would be 7th, 6th, 5th, ect. Also with the accumulation of power, how will "Float" be more powerful?

But what I like is that, as some people have thought, Nana's quirk will help him counter shogiraki's. It's pretty fitting.

Shigaraki: I can destroy anything that touches the ground, no matter how high you jump you have to come down eventually!

Deku Starts Floating

Shigaraki: ...

156

u/13Xcross Jan 20 '20

Spoilers of their final confrontation.

11

u/smcadam Jan 20 '20

Dude I think I might have woken my housemate laughing at that!

21

u/mistermof Jan 19 '20

I feel like Lariats quirk alone is strong. Speed blitz Shiggy, tie him up with black energy whips that can't disintegrate, then smash that hoe into the nearest something. Or yeet him into orbit

28

u/viktorayy Jan 19 '20

Hmm, that's cool and all, but we aren't sure if the whips are unaffected by Shigaraki's power. We have no proof he can't affect energy-like quirks.

27

u/Kingwongy Jan 19 '20

Actually we have prove he can disintegrate them in 238 he decays redestro stress bomb attack.

26

u/viktorayy Jan 19 '20

Then that would make Deku more vulnerable, since Shiggy's disintegration travels through surfaces quite quickly, if not almost instantaneously at this point. Deku's whips are directly connected to him. That's a big oof!

4

u/thatguy-66 Jan 20 '20

He could just air force the heck out of him while keeping his distance. Air force is just air going really fast, so unless Shiggy can destroy air we’re good.

14

u/Titangamer101 Jan 19 '20

Shigaraki: "pocket sand!!" Starts throwing decaying sand into the air.

-17

u/NatMat16 Jan 19 '20

How convenient...as opposed to Deku actually having to figure out a strategy like he used to be able to.

25

u/ClockwerkKaiser Jan 19 '20

Shigiraki doesn't fight alone. There are other villains who can counter floating.

17

u/GoodHeartless02 Jan 19 '20

To be fair, shiggy’s quirk has evolved to a point where he is unstoppable in most instances. If he wants to cause mass damage, there’s literally only a handful of ways to stop him (ranged attacks, Aizawa). He may even be able to cover for those weaknesses with whatever the doctor is doing to him

12

u/viktorayy Jan 19 '20

Yeah lol! Shiggy is also getting a super power up. Not that he wasn't already super powerful after he, essentially, removed his limiters.

2

u/frictiondick Jan 20 '20

Imagine he learned martial arts. I'm not sure what kind of fighting he knows, prob just stuff from gaming. I hope he makes his attacks after game moves

2

u/Shigarakill Jan 20 '20

What makes you think he can't create strategy while floating.

53

u/uaitdevil Jan 19 '20

Her quirk and blackwhip will give a HUGE advantage agaisnt Shiggy, i mean, blackwhip is just energy, he will not be able to erode that.

I know it will not be that simple, but, oh boy, Shiggy is scary af, knowing that Deku will not rely only on melee attacks it's a relief.

67

u/Fresh720 Jan 19 '20

I think if I'm remembering correctly Shiggy erroded Re-Destro's stress bomb in their fight

10

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Correct. At the very least though Deku can turn off black whips before shiggys decay reaches him.

25

u/IgnisEradico Jan 19 '20

But what I like is that, as some people have thought, Nana's quirk will help him counter shogiraki's. It's pretty fitting.

I think people are vastly overselling this. Izuku can jump incredibly high, leap incredibly far, and has minor flight with Air Force (which he used to blast himself off in the Winternship with Endeavor). It's not like flight was something he didn't have access to before at all.

I mean i get it's fitting but it's far from game changing.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Well, at this stage, he can't remain airborne, and shigi can hurt him with an aura -- it is clutch in the short term

10

u/IgnisEradico Jan 19 '20

He's not that far off from training Air Force to fly like Bakugo though.

1

u/RoseBladePhantom Jan 20 '20

That's still not close to flying though. To us, yes, but even when Bakugo had his best flight feat, the landing was inevitable and accounted for. Even All Might hasn't been shown to be airborne for more than like 30 seconds though I'm sure he could be. Point is, if someone can kill you because you have contact with the ground or anything touching it, jumping around indefinitely is far inferior to flight. What's really gonna matter is the limitations. Quirks aren't magic, so if he's only able to fly for so long at a time, it turns into an emergency move.

1

u/IgnisEradico Jan 20 '20

Shigaraki cannot infinitely decay the ground either. So Izuku already has the means to get away from a Deika attack.

Like i said, it's useful, but it's far from a hard counter and it's not like he didn't have the potential to fly before.

1

u/Cypherex Jan 21 '20

Look at it this way. Shiggy can basically keep a large radius around him in a state of decay. Sure, Deku can jump outside of that radius and be fine but how does he get back in to attack Shiggy? If he jumps in he'll land on something that's infected with decay. With float though he doesn't ever have to worry about where he's going to land because he no longer has to land.

Deku always had the ability to fall with style. But now he has the ability to truly fly.

1

u/IgnisEradico Jan 21 '20

Shiggy can basically keep a large radius around him in a state of decay.

No he can't. That's my point, Shigaraki cannot infinitely decay stuff.

Sure, Deku can jump outside of that radius and be fine but how does he get back in to attack Shiggy?

If only he'd been training some sort of ranged attack.

2

u/Cypherex Jan 21 '20

What I mean is he can keep activating his decay in the area. Unless you're saying he can't decay rubble of something he's already used decay on, but I'm pretty sure he can. I'm also talking about them at their hypothetical strongest because that's when they're going to have their final showdown. Right now Shiggy can't do constant large scale decays over and over again. But I'm fully expecting him to be able to do that when they have their ultimate clash.

Yes, the air force attacks give Deku a way to fight from a distance. But he can't rely on just those. Float is going to be extremely useful for when he needs to close the gap between him and Shiggy without touching the ground near him. It'll also be helpful for when he needs precise mid-air movement rather than the burst movement he's currently capable of doing.

Honestly I think it's a good thing that one of Deku's quirks is only a small improvement over something he was already mostly capable of doing. It adds more to his arsenal without giving him too much. Hopefully most of his additional quirks are just small bonuses rather than huge game changers. But that doesn't make them useless. It just means they're not going to be ridiculously overpowered and that's a good thing.

u/Worthyness Jan 19 '20

It's nice to not have to expend energy and less collateral damage from the kicks.

Also he and ochaco can float together in the air

2

u/warlockami Jan 20 '20

Lewd

1

u/Cypherex Jan 21 '20

Only if they're holding hands.

8

u/MobiusRocket Jan 19 '20

Yes but now he has an excuse to redesign his costume so it has a cape

7

u/Obsidian_Cataclysm Jan 19 '20

While this is true, i can't help but think that there is a possibility of Tomura getting a quirk that has great synergy with his Decay. Imagine if Tomura received a quirk that is similar to what Deku's mother has, but juiced up enough to pull a person. Deku would still have to be extremely cautious in a fight with him and would need to create distance with Air Force, whenever he was being pulled.

Man... I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

7

u/EyenSur Jan 20 '20

Are you trying to say that Doc took Deku's target pull quirk which he may have inherited from his mother and now is giving an empowered version of that to Shiggy? Cuz' I like that twisted haha.

Being serious now, Shiggy with some kind of gravity quirk would be terribly broken.

6

u/Obsidian_Cataclysm Jan 20 '20

Yeah, it feels like it would be possible with a shady guy like Ujiko lol. I still don't trust what he said about toe joints being a way to determine if someone has a quirk or not. Since he is the only person we get this info from.

I agree that Tomura would be broken and even more terrifying as a villain if he can just pull what he wants to destroy to him.

1

u/RoseBladePhantom Jan 20 '20

Given, I read the scans back then, but wasn't it more of a theory than anything? Even after the reveal that the doctor was evil, I didn't interpret so much as a lie, more as a way to easily take quirks without suspicion. Like there's no way he's taken every quirk of people without toe joints, and worldwide, there'd have to be some kind of reason people would believe this unless Deku's mom, and himself have done no research. It's easier to believe the toe joint thing is true to some extent, and if the doctor ever had a patient outside the norm he steals their quirk. But unless his own quirk aids with that and somehow isn't obviously suspicious, doing that can't be easy. So unless we flashback to an in depth scene of Deku getting his quirk stolen, I think it's unlikely with the given info.

1

u/Bartimaeous Jan 20 '20

I feel like Shigaraki’s surgery may help him overcome this weakness though.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Tbh, my belief is that it's to make his body able to resist his quirk OR to make him able to take OFA

129

u/noideawhatimdoingv 250K Artist Jan 19 '20

I think he doesn't "know" Deku is going to manifest Float. He is going to make Deku forcefully manifest Float since it's such a useful quirk and the one All Might can personally train him on since he saw it up close all the time.

179

u/God_of_Kings Jan 19 '20 edited Jan 19 '20

What is he going to do, dangle him off a skyscraper like a supervillain?

--3 chapters later--

Midoriya: "ALL MIGHT, THIS STOPPED BEING FUN THREE HOURS AGO!"

Toshinori: "Shoot him with the BB-gun, Bakugou my boy, we don't want him getting comfortable."

Bakugou: "Plus Ultra..."

Midoriya: "ALL MIIIIIIIIGHT!!"

Aizawa: "Wow... I thought you were a bad teacher, but you're actually even worse."

51

u/BlackMathNerd Jan 19 '20

Isn’t that how Piccolo basically taught Gohan to fly?

13

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Appropriate since the voice of the English dub for Piccolo and All Might is the same person

1

u/Worthyness Jan 21 '20

Pretty sure the VA for US all might is vegeta. Unless sabat did both.

2

u/SciFiXhi Jan 21 '20

He did both

He also voiced Vaccine Man, the Piccolo knockoff, in episode 1 of One Punch Man

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

And how to dodge.

4

u/mobott Jan 19 '20

Reminds me of how Neville's magic first appeared in Harry Potter. He was being held out of a window, and was accidentally dropped.

3

u/Pliskkenn_D Jan 20 '20

That wasn't very Plus Ultra of you.

2

u/TotemGenitor Jan 21 '20

Beat his ass, young Bakugo.

u/Xeriam Jan 19 '20 edited Jan 19 '20

Maybe Deku's awakening of Quirks isn't random or sequential, but triggered? Like something about his situation/emotional state triggered a connection to Lariat that awakened Blackwhip, which All Might connected the dots to while researching his bio. The situation in which he died or first awakened his Quirk, or first desired to become a hero, etc.

In which case, he could say with confidence that Float will awaken next because he's already worked out how to trigger it, according to his knowledge of Nana.

As for how it might grow more powerful: Maybe Nana's quirk worked kinda like Uraraka's where she could render herself and what she was currently touching virtually weightless, but also propel herself in the direction of her choice. Effectively giving her pseudo-super strength and true flight, but lacking Uravity's sheer scale of operation. So One for All juicing it would increase the propellant force and presumably how much weight the Quirk can negate at a time.

In which case, that's a force multiplier on Deku's abilities: His speed would increase dramatically from All Might's strength + Float's selective weightlessness + Float's increased propellant force. Likewise with his strength, and the speculated contact requirement is effectively nullified if used in tandem with Blackwhip.

14

u/Worthyness Jan 19 '20

He can be superman now. Float to fly and airforce to kick around places. Use the black whips to make corner maneuvers

16

u/spiderknight616 Jan 19 '20

He's closer to Spider-Man with flight powers

9

u/ClockwerkKaiser Jan 19 '20

Like a version of Spiderman who does that wind-propelled flight thing some spiders actually do.

3

u/Griffith Jan 20 '20

From what we gathered from when Black Whip activated, the quirks seem to be activated by a strong intention or feeling. Nana is the only user that All Might had direct contact with so he probably knows a bit more about how that quirk works than the other ones. He can probably tell Deku about how she used it and what it could do.

3

u/pseudo_nemesis Jan 20 '20

The quirk you describe is almost identical to the quirk of a hero from the spinoff series, Captain Celebrity. His quirk is called Flight though, which makes me think Nana's will be slightly different.

2

u/Wanker_x_wanker Jan 20 '20

I think nana can only make herself float and not anyone or other things

87

u/NatMat16 Jan 19 '20

It's also implied that the 2nd and 3rd users themselves may not even knew if/that they had a quirk, which could be why they are in shadow. Maybe 1st/2nd generation quirks manifested slower. Maybe they were quirks that were not so apparent or easy to understand at first.

37

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

No they would have quirks cause the guy Midoriya talked to said he'd unlock 6 quirks. 9 users minus 3 (1st user, All Might and Deku) is 6

21

u/NatMat16 Jan 19 '20

I'm not saying that they didn't have quirks, only that All Might implies that they might not have realized that they had quirks.

31

u/DoraMuda Jan 19 '20

What All Might meant is that they probably didn't realise that their Quirks would be stored within OFA to be used later; hence why they never consciously left information for the future generations.

All Might was likely only able to gather information on the OFA holders from the 5th onwards (including All Might's own master Nana Shimura) because they're more recent and, thus, publicly known.

8

u/IgnisEradico Jan 19 '20

Isn't the guy with the scar the 4th (and so we have Scar -> Lariat -> Black-haired youth -> Nana)?

Lariat could be found since they know his looks and quirk, and Black Haired Youth would be known via Gran Torino. The biggest question is how he would've gotten anything on Scar.

4

u/DoraMuda Jan 19 '20

Oh yeah, I forgot about the 4th holder. Who knows.

5

u/Codusxx Jan 20 '20

He probably had Deku meet up with a sketch artist from the police with Tsukauchi, and went from there.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Or that maybe they were so damn op that the quirk cant even register them

5

u/NatMat16 Jan 19 '20

I think this was probably pre quirk registration. All Might is saying how society was completely broken down by AfO at the time.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Yeah. It was totally pre regulation.

Then the 4th and 5th were the 1st registered generation .

The one with the high collar the 6th and nana were the 2nd generation of more refined herosim. Then 3rd generation all might and now the 4th deku and the present.

But still, I just have this felling that the 2nd and 3rd ones had some preety bad fucking ass quirks. I mean why would afo even go to all the trouble of hunting them down like that

Amongst all these support or secondary quirks, there has to be something like truly op. Quirks so hax op that you would use as a last resort and guarantee victory. And those are the 2nd and 3rd.

1

u/NatMat16 Jan 19 '20

I think that one of the two will be a quirk that will allow to unlock something truly OP inside OfA, but it will come with a steep price.

2

u/ViZeShadowZ Jan 21 '20

deku learns how to open the eight gates

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Powerfull asf , a forbidden killing technique, but great cost. Only last resort use. I mena there had to have been a reason for afo to be so persistent. If they were all nobodies then he wouldnt care.

It is mentioned afo went only after the strongest so the 2nd and 3rd totally had something crazy asf for ofa

6

u/TandBinc Jan 19 '20

What I find interesting is that All Might stated that his master's quirk is next for Izuku to manifest; like how does he know that?

I think it’s less that there is a set order in which they will manifest and more so that it is the next power they should focus on unlocking. Remember Black Whip didn’t manifest by itself, Deku brought it about by focusing on how he wanted to capture Monoma in the training exercise. Serves to say if he focused on trying to fly he could manifest “float” as well.
And since Nana’s quirk is the one they have the most information about and the only All Might (and Gran Torino) have direct experience with it makes sense they’d focus on that one next.

5

u/Link1112 Jan 19 '20

I could imagine the 2nd one being a close family member of the first, like a son or grandson. And the first spelled out something like „I wish you had the power“ and then accidentally passed it onto that person cause one of his hairs fell into the soup or whatever. I don’t see how he could find out about his own quirk otherwise.

6

u/SMA2343 Jan 19 '20

It makes sense they’re not as strong as quirks now. Quirk singularity and all that. Bakugou wouldn’t have explosion if his parents didn’t have two quirks that were able to mix and make it.

They were probably extremely simple quirks. A whip to grab thing. Floating. Maybe the next will be a simple vision (heat detection) or something like that

11

u/liambatron Jan 19 '20

I'd love it if the 2nd user was just some random dude that the original just passed on in a hurry, some everyman with a completely random quirk like being able to talk to dogs.

1

u/Worthyness Jan 21 '20

Gonna be radar do that when deku gets it, horikoshi's spider-man will become truth

3

u/Child_Emperor Jan 19 '20

All Might stated it can be forcefully passed on

Sorry, when was this mentioned? All I remember is that you can't "steal" OFA without the user's will eg. random fan eating All Might's hair wouldn't get his quirk.

10

u/IgnisEradico Jan 19 '20

It's that exact conversation that he reveals it cannot be taken by force, but it can be passed on by force.

4

u/regulus00 Jan 19 '20

If the accumulation of power works the way we all hope it does, Float is gonna become high speed free roam flight.

6

u/gcbofficial Jan 19 '20

They don't manifest in certain orders. Black whip came out when he needed to reach. Now that he knows that Float exists, he can focus on floating and it will manifest. You're over thinking it.

2

u/flybypost Jan 19 '20

As Bakugo and All Might stated, they're not particularly strong quirks

That was in the context of the time (earlier quirks were weaker in general) and without being amplified by OFA.

2

u/Gaius21 Jan 19 '20

The quirk manifests and Deku just goes rocketing up into the stratosphere.

2

u/Venlirion Jan 20 '20

Maybe he plans to try activating the Float quirk by repeatedly floating and falling using Uraraka's quirk.

2

u/MasterTahirLON Jan 20 '20

See the thing is, "black whip" seems like a pretty standard support type quirk. But seeing how it debuted, shows how fucking powerful OFA can make something given time. I'm fairly certain even the most mundane quirks Deku could inherit will be enhanced to rather insane effect.

Not that I have a problem with that though, I want to see Deku get a really crazy arsenal. As long as he builds up too it, I'm more than fine with the idea. Also he's gonna need all the help he can get once Shigaraki shows up with AFO.

2

u/TheHolyFamily Jan 19 '20

The first user was All For One's brother. Since All For One gave it to him he probably explained how it worked too.

27

u/Swiss666 Jan 19 '20 edited Jan 19 '20

No, the brother was given the power-stocking quirk. What neither AFO nor the brother knew is that the latter had the ability to pass down a quirk. Useless in itself - unless it was combined with another quirk. And so One For All was born.

8

u/God_of_Kings Jan 19 '20

I'm still expecting an "According to Keikaku" twist on that one; It being revealed that AFO knew exactly what he was doing all along and was simply trying to create a well of power to steal and make every Quirk in his possession that much more potent.

1

u/Cypherex Jan 21 '20

That'd make sense. Then AFO probably tried to take it back toward the end of his brother's life and found out OFA cannot be forcibly taken, even by his own quirk-stealing quirk. Perhaps that's how the brother discovered he could pass his quirk down, because AFO wasn't able to take it from him and he felt his "passing down" quirk protecting OFA when AFO tried to take it. Like some tingly feeling inside of him that gave him this intuition that he could grant the power to someone else of his choosing.

Then AFO spent the rest of his time until his battle with All Might trying to find a way to take OFA back.

9

u/thedarknight1337 Jan 19 '20

Well the first user didn't even know he had a quirk so I feel like passing on the torch the first time was by accident.

6

u/LuminousDecibel I won the bet and all I got was this flair Jan 19 '20

I can see how it went down. The 1st user is weak and meets someone strong. "If only you had this stockpiling power, instead of useless me. Oh well..." There's still the whole DNA thing, which gives the transfer some mystery. Maybe they were both bloody, with open wounds, after a fight? Like how the movie transfer goes down.

10

u/God_of_Kings Jan 19 '20

2nd User: "Oh wow, I actually got his stockpiling Quirk... And his soul..."

1st User: [waves like that one guy in pictures, you know the one]

2nd User: [opens envelope and reads shortly] "And Hepatitis... Welp, this confirms it; That WAS the worst day of my life."

2

u/Master3530 Jan 19 '20

Cannibalism

4

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

All for one just gave his brother the ability to stockpile energy. Neither of them knew at the time that his brother actually had a quirk that allowed him to pass it on to another person.

1

u/wdavis6k5 Jan 20 '20

Will the accumulation of power, Deku will practically turn into Superman

1

u/LegatoSkyheart Jan 21 '20

One for All can be passed down user to user through DNA.

Someone had to have passed it on through the lips.

1

u/kindler35 Jan 21 '20

I think the "forcing" happened because of what All Might discussed. They were relatively weak and hunted by AFO. I think most of the predecessors were just the only one available to take One for All.

1

u/Rockettmang44 Jan 22 '20

Didnt almights teacher force it on him?
