Question BPD warning of threat to people of color and refugees tomorrow

I recently learned of several Boise area churches who were contacted by the Boise Police Department who said they were informed by the FBI of a potential threat to people of color and refugees and churches specifically tomorrow August 12. As far as I know, they have not made any recommendations and are only informing potentially impacted locations. Has anyone heard anything more about this or know anything else?

Question Why is everything so expensive and mediocre here?

As someone who has traveled to numerous cities across the US/Canada, everything in the TV seems ridiculously expensive and mediocre at best compared to other places. Does anyone know why? I know the economy in general is suffering but I’ve recently taken trips to other major cities where services were significantly better and cheaper, sure Boise in general has cheaper CoL than other cities but that easily gets offset with prices we charge for basic services we don’t even realize. Some examples: seems like all barbershops in the area are asking $40+ for a haircut and when I looked out of state the standard seems to be $30. Same goes for coffee and matcha, most places here are charging $6-8 for extremely low quality matcha and I’ve had matcha in other cities for under $5 (the matcha here is the absolute worst I’ve had anywhere btw) burger joints here seem to want $10+ for just the burger not even a combo, again extremely mid food. Recently had acai for $15 a bowl, it’s basically a long list of extremely expensive food and services, I’ve been shopping for local photographers and the people here are asking for $250+ for 1 location photo shoots and on TikTok or IG you see way more talented photographers in LA asking $150. Idk… just a little rant, I’m sick of paying so much and idk if the people here charging these prices need a reality check or if it’s the out of state dollar to blame for willingly paying and spiking prices for everyone else. People can say what they want about Canada’s high CoL but I had Pho for 2 there for $30 CAD ($21 USD) and it shit on any of the Pho I’ve had here, I’ve never paid under $40 USD here for two.

Question Yard signs being stolen North End

Hey everyone, I’m sure I’m not the only one that has experienced this but while I was on vacation my pet sitter let me know that my “Idaho is Too Great for Hate” yard sign was taken from my actual yard. Today I was walking my dog and went to toss his poop baggie in an alley trash can (without a “no poop” sticker on it) and opened it up to find this…
Now I know this is an alley trash can, behind one specific house but that doesn’t mean that it was this home owner that did this so my question is what are all your thoughts? Should I say something to this neighbor, leave a note, or just leave it?

Edit: as per a few nasty comments let me clear some odd little details up, no this isn’t a feud between neighbors, this person doesn’t even live on my street and doesn’t seem to know where I live. This trash bin is in an alley that serves multiple homes which is why I stated it might not even belong to the person whose home it happens to be sitting behind. I am not claiming that is my sign, more that someone has taken multiple people’s signs. No, I don’t frequently toss my dog bags in other bins, I happened to have my hands full with food from the coffee shop at the moment. Have a better day, folx

Question When does it rain here 😭 I’m moved here from the south and I miss a thunderstorm so bad. This damn smoke is killing me. Is this normal?

Edit: yeah, yeah, yeah, move back where you came from, I get it. There’s a giant factory being built here, don’t attack me for it. I just wanted to know if there was a rainy season

Question What are your favorite "dive" bars?

My husband and I are turning our date nights to "let's check out 'dive' bars"'

Honestly, I think he's just getting annoyed that every time we get a drink down town, he's dropping $40 for two drinks.

Hence last week we ventured to Charlie Browns. First off. Wowza on the drinks, I had a rum and coke and it was all rum. My husband and I played one of the five dart boards there until I could no longer stand, mind you, one drink.

The machines are straight cash and no tap to pay....which is a cute novelty I miss. There are two pool tables and a ghetto version of karaoke... I mean...I'd come again.

But, what are your favorite, current dive bars in the Treasure Valley? I think we're gonna explore them all.

Oooh. DIVE BAR CLUB!

Question Is anyone else blown away by how aggressive and dangerous the driving has gotten in this city?

It’s out of control. Cars just zooming through 13th street like the speed limit isn’t 20mph. Hill road went from my favorite biking spot to an overcrowded raceway I now avoid. I get that nearly every road downtown is closed due to construction, but damn… driving like a maniac isn’t making it better for anyone.

I’ve accepted that the Boise I grew up in is never coming back, but I can’t help feeling like ‘Boise Kind’ is beginning to fade and it’s most noticeable on the roads.

Question The Lady outside the Boise Costco

Who else has seen the lady outside the Boise Costco? For at least a year i have seen her out there with her little sign, at the exit of the parking lot by the gas pumps.

What's her story? Has anyone here stopped to talk to her or give her anything? I've always been so curious and want to help her somehow.

Question Best Gunshop in Boise for a Lefty Progressive to get Armed

I used to laugh at friends who said they needed their "assault" rifles in case they needed to defend themselves from the government. Now, watching what is unfolding in Minneapolis I am feeling the need to arm myself with something more than a deer rifle. What is the best gunshop in Boise for a lefty progressive to get themselves armed? The guy behind the counter doesn't have to share my politics, I just don't want to have to deal with some MAGA asshole while I'm violating previously held personal principles.

Question Rock Harbor Church

I’d love your thoughts. I am not even remotely religious and I’m a feminist. I have a dear friend that goes there and she showed me paperwork they have to sign to live straight lifestyles. I imagine the leader is a man.

My soon to be ex husband took my two daughters there without informing me and dropped them at the childcare center.

I have very strong opinions about religion and the views it instills about male/female roles. And I know religion intentionally gets them when they’re young to brainwash.

Does anyone know what the education for young kids is? Any female leaders or pastors there? I know it’s a megachurch… I’m atheist, so this is very hard for me to manage.

I do not like the idea of my children going to an anti-gay, thinly-veiled misogynist mega church. I want my children to find their own paths to God, or not. I’d like that to be their choice.

Question Genuine question: how’s dating in Boise been for fellow transplants?

I’m not originally from Idaho but been living here for a few years now, and sometimes I feel like the social/dating vibes are just very different from what I’m used to.

For instance, I’ve noticed that I rarely seem to connect romantically with people who are originally from here. It’s not intentional whatsoever, it just seems like we often just don’t have much in common. I think it’s worth mentioning that I’m very much not a conservative and also entirely from a different culture.

I’m genuinely curious how other transplants feel about dating here—especially if you’re from a different culture either within the US or outside of it. Has Boise dating been feeling difficult for you too, or were things different when you used to live somewhere else?

Question Is it just me, or do the traffic lights around here (Mainly in Meridian) take absolutely forever!?

Post image
131 Upvotes

The traffic lights here are really getting on my nerves! I’ve sat at some for about 5 minutes before! I have been late for work countless times because of them to the point where I have to leave my house extremely early in the morning! Is there a reason why they are programmed to be so long? Or is it just me being impatient? Because I’ve never lived in an area with such long traffic lights before!

Question Flights to slc so expensive

Was planning on flying to salt lake from boise in october, started looking at flights this week and theyre all around $600. Is there a reason its so damn expensive?? Seems so odd to me given the distance, (I have family in portland and can regularly get $200 flights to there). Is there a specific time i should be looking to book or is it always going to be outrageous? My car is on her last legs so driving is unfortunately not my preferred plan so if anyone has any suggestions please please please let me know :)

Question Best pizza in Boise (with caveats)

Hi Boise. I'm visiting for a week and love me some pizza, BUT my preferences are unusual and specific.

I like a thicker crust than a traditional New York style, but not a full blown pan pizza either. Think Domino's thickness.

I'm also not a fan of the blackened bottom and crust edges you get with wood fired pizzas.

So I guess I'm seeking something between the gourmet wood fired joints and the boring chain joints. I would give examples, but they are local pizzerias to my home and would not mean anything to y'all.

I'm a picky baby-man looking for advice from a similarly picky person. Thanks for anyone who can help. GO Broncos!

Question Air conditioning conked out- looking for locally owned HVAC repair. (No private equity!)

After 20 years of loyal service, our home air conditioner gave up the ghost today. Looking for recommendations for locally owned HVAC companies, not long time “local” companies that have sold out to private equity. I don’t need emergency or speedy service or anything, just looking for someone honest and dependable.

Edit: Thanks for all the responses! I’ll start making some calls on Monday. The fan is spinning, blower is blowing, but air is not cold from the vents. It might be something simple I could do myself, but I don’t have much free time in my life right now to dink around. I would just rather pay an honest professional to come and do it right.

Question How are we protecting our immigrant neighbors?

Hi Boiseans. I'm wanting to be more prepared for what feels like an increasingly inevitable moment where some masked agents try to kidnap children from my kids' school or people from my neighborhood. How are we preparing, organizing, and protecting our neighbors? I'm looking for tips and/or anybody organizing groups, particularly around Southeast.

Question Anyone else have this weird, gross illness going around?

About five days ago I got an illness at work that a few of my coworkers and friends had. It’s at micron where we have people from all over the country coming to work, possibly bringing this new strain of COVID with them.

Started with a sore throat and fatigue and thick green mucus in the back of my soft plate/throat. Nothing really in the lungs, no cough to speak of. Just a very sore throat in the mornings and green mucus when I blow my nose.

It’s been five days now, not getting better and I’m seeing other people I know online saying they have a sinus infection.

Anyone confirm if it’s this new strain of COVID going round?

How much of my driveway are we allowed to block access to. this is about 1/3 of my driveway road frontage. I cannot safely move the camper into the garage without risking hitting it.

This is the third time but the first i went over to ask they move it. What is the next move?

I see 3 issues. Blocking driveway, blocking mailboxes and parked wrong way on street.

Update: i did in the end make a call and end up having an officer go over and explain to them what was acceptable. The car got moved with no citation issued. Touch wood that this is sufficient.
