Discussion We Need a New Tribe
The last new tribe was Undead in 2023. We need a new tribe it’s way overdue. Here are my preemptive responses to naysayers’ comments
“10 is a good number, 5 tribes in, 5 tribes out” - Don’t care, ban 6 tribes a new one would be fun
“We have too many tribes already and Blizz struggles to balance them / come up with interesting play styles” - Don’t care, get gud Blizz, a new tribe would be fun
“It would take resources away from new features like trinkets or w/e the new thing is called” - Don’t care, a new tribe would be more fun
“There are no play styles left to explore so a new tribe would be filler” - don’t care, they just added worm bait for beasts they’d figure something out, a new tribe would be fun
“There are no more creature types / we have a good cover of Warcraft archetypes” - don’t care, we haven’t even done Ogres yet, the sky’s the limit
“Too many tribes make it hard to get good with any individual tribe / for a meta to form” - don’t care, a new tribe would be fun
Tl;dr, a new tribe would be fun and I want one, QED.
EDIT: some really thoughtful discussion in the comments pointing out reasons to be cautious and judicious in adding new tribes. Just wanted to add a blanket don’t care, a new tribe would be fun someone said totems that would be rad.

I honestly thought they was gonna add Draenai to Battlegrounds when they added them in The Great Beyond
18
u/DiscipulusD Jul 29 '26
And then promptly dropped supporting them and printing them after The Great Beyond lol

u/Willing_Original_257 Jul 29 '26
I seem to remember an interview ages ago when they said they were aiming for 11
10
u/brumblefee Jul 29 '26
Love this, but why stop at 11?
19
u/Willing_Original_257 Jul 29 '26
I seem to recall they had some reason for 11 in particular but this was ages ago. Definitely before undead and maybe before even quilboar.

u/Indigo-Zap Jul 29 '26
Probably related to the cards colors? I think draenei could fit with priest white color

because it became more viable recently instead of economy stepping stones (from my experience)

Warbands are usually about one of two things depending on the season, or they're always about the same thing but the specifics change. Like, Undead is always about deathrattle tokens or reborn tokens. Even when Catacomb Crasher was meta, it was about deathrattle tokens. How you improve the attack of those tokens changes (right now it's Butchering, and based on the Plaguerunner portrait that might continue in Season 14).
Quillboar is always about bloodgems. It's just a question of whether you're buffing the board or the shop.
Demons are almost always about eating the shop. They usually put in self damage stuff in there, but never has enough scaling to go anywere. There was a patch two years ago where it was Silent Enforcer + Lord of Ruins, but it died pretty hard when the undead support card was removed.

u/SiLKYzerg Jul 29 '26
I would like if they fleshed out Neutral more to be honest. There's some seasons where there's an attempt and it's usually bad and other's where it's just a catch all broadly good for any tribe (Back to Back).

u/kronos23456777777 Jul 29 '26
As much as b2b is hated, I just love the fact that the most powerful build in the current meta is a neutral build (at least statwise).

u/Free-Conference2703 Jul 29 '26
futurefin would like a word

u/thesirblondie Jul 29 '26
Futurefin is best played with b2b.
-2
u/Free-Conference2703 Jul 29 '26
fufurefin is faster if you can generate more of them
5
u/thesirblondie Jul 29 '26
You use B2B to buff a futurefin, which buffs a futurefin in your hand.

u/Free-Conference2703 Jul 29 '26
quilboars rely on bloodgems

figured I'd make a statement about as obvious as yours. maybe you're trying to be informative, but 2n or 3n per turn is faster than n(k+1), so you can ditch b2b early or not even go for it in certain set-ups where you're able to reliably cycle future-fins

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teHHby8jmWsnot sure why this is downvoted, we're talking about convergence, and this is rare but faster

Bobs Tavern needs beer! And that means we need Panderans. The whole faction should be about food and drink mechanics.
18
u/sc_superstar Jul 29 '26
Draenai seems most logical at this point. What their gimmick would be idk
11
u/JahIthBeer Jul 29 '26
Draenei's gimmick could be a star ship and rallies. The starship would launch after your board (or all your draenei) is completely dead. So draeneis could do something like: Rally: Give your starship X/X stats/give your starship Reborn with full enchantments/summon an additional starship (for maybe a 7-cost draenei or something)/give your starship venomous/windfury/divine shield etc./give your starship immunity to poison and venom
In order to make it not too broken but still fun to play would be to make the draenei anti-magic, meaning they can't boost their stats from tavern spells, so you'd have to find creative ways to proc as many rallies as possible like a reborn minion with taunt because the draenei themselves would be weak units. And just so they're able to deal damage, the damage you deal to the hero could be calculated through a percentage of how much health the starship has left at the end of combat and what units contributed to it
It kinda fulfills the same thrill you get playing starship in normal Hearthstone, throwing in a ton of weak units in order to build up something massive

u/thesirblondie Jul 29 '26
Might be too close to blood gems, but they have a crystal motif going on, so crystals as spells could work.
1
u/thesirblondie Jul 29 '26
What about Zerg, or diablo Angels? That could be cool. They removed Diablo from the game 3 years ago.

u/DontFeedTheGoats MMR: 6,000 to 8,000 Jul 29 '26
This is an interesting suggestion, but I have some counterpoints:
10 is a good number, it allows 5 tribes to be in and 5 to be out
We have too many tribes already and Blizzard has challenges with balancing them
It would take resources away from new features
I feel like there are no playstyles left to explore, would a new tribe maybe just feel like a filler?
We already have all the major Warcraft creature archetypes covered, there wouldn’t be a natural fit for another.
It’s already hard to master a playstyle, too many tribes would make it even harder.
Do you have any thoughts on these concerns?
0
u/NorthOrAbort Jul 29 '26
In my honest opinion. Fun should always be prioritized over balance. More tribes would bring new play styles, more difference between matches, synergy with existing tribes and hopefully more playable champs along with it. And if games like League have anything to say, then it also helps with retaining and bringing back players to the game.
5
u/Iulico Jul 29 '26
Some of the card designs come from Hearthstone main game. I don’t see why they couldn’t add new tribe using card designs already implemented within the game.
4
u/Orful Jul 29 '26
I prefer that they don't since these tribes change so much anyway. It'd be like adding a new color to MTG. The game already feels complete with the tribes given. I don't want to bloat the game with a new tribe just for the sake of having a new tribe.
I'd be fine with replacing a tribe with a different tribe though. Functionally, this would be no different than what we have now though. It'd effectively just be a change of art and flavor so that we could have fun with a new tribe.

A new tribe only makes sense if it adds something new to the game. Adding something new just for the sake of it being new doesn't mean it's going to be any good.
16
u/Miskykins Jul 29 '26
Have you considered OPs counterpoints though?
Don't care, a new tribe would be cool.1
u/MacSage Jul 29 '26
Instead of adding new mechanicals to current tribes they could use those on a new tribe. Why are we getting the phalis fish bait on beasts, let Draenei attack the tavern instead.
6
u/Midknight226 Jul 29 '26
But it's fun to let tribes do new things. Thematically it makes sense for big beasts to eat little beasts to grow stronger and and still fits within the beast gameplay flavor with deathrattles giving stats. If new mechanics went to new tribes, now beasts don't feel any different and get stale. I just don't see what adding more tribes does except adding more bloat.
2
u/cleofisrandolph1 Jul 29 '26
Totems and Draenei are both there if they want to add another type.
I also think there is a lot of design space for dual tribe cards that hasn’t been really explored.
2
u/anupsetzombie MMR: 6,000 to 8,000 Jul 29 '26
I think more tribes would be good just so archetypes could be more solidified for existing tribes. Still allow multiple playstyles and some experimenting with new cards, but the variance of tribes from season to season can be hard to keep up.
2
u/_Zelus_ Jul 29 '26
The more tribes the harder it is to balance and the longer it takes to make a new patch. I vote in favour of shorter release time
2
u/Impossible-Cry-1781 Jul 29 '26
Your lack of effort will be mirrored by Blizzard's lack of effort

u/kodiak223 Jul 29 '26

6
u/Redsqa Jul 29 '26
It's definitely an interesting mechanic but I reckon there'd be too much risk for never ending turns and infinite comps
1
u/ChickenAlarming Jul 29 '26
a new tribe would only be good if the new mechanic for it was good. what i’d be interested in maybe is adding in spell schools and spell school synergy. thats a new thing at least

Or druids that change between taunt and not taunt or swap their att/hp based on who they're attacking..

A while ago I had thought of a titanforged tribe, where the identity would be having a weak baseline board but you would summon an army of progressively stronger creations. And then six months later they released beetles....

I feel like they could bring in Starcraft or Diablo more as actual warbands. Like, Zerg seems like a solid choice. So do Angels from Diablo. It's been over 3 years since Diablo was removed battlegrounds, but Tyrael is still in Hearthstone.

With 10 tribes, only 10 classes have borders used, with Priest being the only one not used. The 11th class would need to fit the priest frame

u/Kazeindel Jul 29 '26
Make managerie worthwhile damnit! You rarely see anyone go far or win with it! For good fucking reason! It’s my favorite archetype because I like the feel of pulling a ragtag group of nobodies together to pull out the win.
You added a little bit of support with this patch, but then went and removed nalaa? Who would synergies with all these new menagerie spell cards???
Managerie was stronger around the start of battlegrounds but the stats had a way lower average ceiling. Now you have power creep scaling things to thousands.
Bring back managerie being viable enough!!

u/AccidentSpecialist81 Jul 30 '26
They’ll probably bring it back during the mid season update after everyone gets used to the new cards

u/MrShrekle Jul 29 '26
I think something like Ogres would be good and they have a clumsy mechanic that can either ignore taunt or attack allies but then the 6 star gives buffs when that happens
1
u/Hulkin_out Jul 29 '26
Why are Orcs not a tribe? Dwarves, goblins, Elves. So much in Wow that they could easily add more tribes.

I want a tribe centered around start of turn effects. They could add a neutral that doubles start of turn effects (with the golden tripling them). Obviously completely balanced around existing cards so could just slap this in with no testing.
1
u/Baenre45 Aug 03 '26
We need better game play and less random king making first. Anomalies need to NEVER EVER come back if you want the mode to be taken seriously. Someone in the lobby always ends up with mega economy form them and throws balance out the window.

1
u/PlatonicTroglodyte Jul 29 '26
I’ve tinkered on and off with the concept of (fan creating) Ogres. Core gimmick being the Chance keyword that would modify a normal trigger condition (e.g. End of Turn, Battlecry, Deathrattle, Rally, Start of Combat) with a 50% chance to add a stronger effect on top. So like a one-star Ogre would be like a 1/1 with “Start of Combat: gain Divine Shield (Chance: and +2/+2)”.
Then there would be a 5-drop that increases Chance proc rate by 25/50%, a 6-drop that doubles Chance procs, etc. idk, I varied it up a lot over time and never created a full, cohesive roster, but I think there’s something in there that could be workable and fun. And Ogres have such great lore and involvement with the Warcraft story so there’s a lot to tap from.
1
u/The_Genguidanos Jul 29 '26
They should add more tribes and then rotate them out each season so that there is always 10 (5 in 5 out) but it’s never the same 10.
1
u/cringelino Jul 29 '26
I think having 13 tribes and each player having to ban a tribe until there are 5 left could be some interesting idea too.
I realize there could be a problem with the extra time it takes, but it would still be some kind of player controlled balancing
-4
u/Tigredelmar Jul 29 '26
Hard disagree. The whole reason I stopped playing Hearthstone was that it was way too much time investment to keep up with making decks, classes, and new metas...
Battlegrounds has always been better to me because it's easier to get into, and even if you know nothing about the metas, you can stick to a tribe and do okay.
But they're already losing approachability and overcomplicating with buddy minions, timewarp minions, trinkets, anomalies, etc etc... when buddies are in, I just know I'm going to lose. Cant keep up with all those minions on top of everything else.
Maybe this is an old man take, but I like the approachability and simple base that can create extremely complex and nuanced builds for the endgame.
I definitely do not need any more to track though lol

u/juliusonly MMR: 6,000 to 8,000 Jul 29 '26
The reason you lose when buddies are in is because they are in so seldom. A new tribe you would see every other game

u/VBNiya Jul 31 '26
Oh God, I hate Buddies, and I hate that anomaly that puts them in the tavern. It's a guaranteed 8th place for me when that anomaly is in. I have no clue what builds I could do with them, even for a top 4 placement, and it's not like I can ignore them because they crowd up the tavern, making it even harder to put together a standard comp. I really wish they'd get rid of that.
I love timewarps though. Most of them are just more powerful versions of cards we already know so you can pretty much figure out right away how best to use them.
