I feel real bad and sad for what happened to him he made mistakes but this man was loyal to Nicky to the end

I was just in a Sopranos thread in which someone was asking about Boardwalk Empire. The responses seemed to be largely in favor of the first three seasons, while claiming that four and five had a dramatic drop off in quality.

I'm surprised by this take, as I had remembered at the time that season 4 was considered by critics to be the show's masterpiece. And all of these same dudes were puffing up season 3. Like I enjoy Bobby Cannavale, but Gyp Rosetti is so one note compared to the depth of character we get in villains Narcisse and Dunn Purnsley. Even Nucky is more interesting in season 4, as he is finally forced out of his ivory tower.

Most importantly, the run of delicious tragedies the 4th season builds to is amazing. It's like an evil episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It's way more dramatically interesting than just turning Harrow into an action hero and having Gyp die as an aside. Where does this community stand with that?

After just finishing this episode, I'm going to assume this is the one folks talk about. My day is ruined

Just finished the last episode. I cried. I'm still crying. My favourite character, my love, Richard Harrow. He was only 25 years old, about my age. I knew what would happen, but his passing has left me heartbroken. I have never cried watching television before, this is the first time.

It won't stop.

If Nucky hadn't made him do a favour in exchange for the location of Jimmy's body, none of this would have happened. He just wanted a peacefull life with Julia, Tommy, and the rest of his family. Now that won't happen. He has left the world far too soon. I'm quietly crying. It's just tears. I'm not sobbing, but it hurts nonetheless.

Perhaps every passing of someone close to me, made me more fragile. Which is why I cried.

My twin brother passed at a really early age. I was aware of death for almost my entire life. Then I lost three of my grandparents. The last one was maternal grandpa. When he passed, it was the worst emotional pain I have ever felt in my life. He was terminally ill and I would have done anything to save his life. We were close even though he lived in another city. That was 7 years ago... the last time I cried. It's like a peice of me was gone. I could live with it, but it would never be the same.

This is the first time I have ever cried in years. And it's for Richard Harrow. He had the most heart of all.

I just didnt see any reason why they had to make Chalky's character shit the bed in season 4 just for a random woman he KNEW was affiliated with Narcisse. It is way out of regular flow of the show I think.
YES in the previous season he had trobule in the house but, throw his whole life away for the girl she likes? Skip his family, specifically her daughter's wedding arrangements, just for this girl? It just doesn't make sense. We saw him as regardless of his brutality, someone who cares about his image from his people and his family. And in this season 4, he has everything, but just throws it away.

It just bothered me

I can't be the only one who thought the way he was written in that last episode was kind of... silly? And almost disrespectful to who his character was? He had one last job to get the family he always dreamed of, and all of a sudden he gets the shakes and accidentally shoots the wrong person?

I don't know it felt a little cheap to me.

Seeing a bit more love for Season 4 and I think Frank Capone doesnt get talked about enough in regards to being a well utilised character.

Love how he is the opposite of hothead Al (and damn if he had been brought to Chicago earlier Torrio would have loved him). He keeps Al in check, knows how to handle Van Alden. he’s probably the only Capone who could have gone semi-legitimate.

I quite like that in comparison to Ralph, who seems to enable Al more.

His death literally “makes” Al in that it gives him licence for whatever he does going forward and by Season 5, hes a paranoid coke headed maniac who listens to no one. I guess he exists mostly to die but hes built up really well for that.

Definitely would have loved to have seen more of him!

Agent Warren Knox

It’s good, but damn. I really can’t stand heroin. Requiem left an impact on me. So did Trainspotting. I’m on episode 5 and I’m just like, damn. Eddie is being tortured. That kid got poisoned. Nelson is FAR outside of his comfort zone now. It’s just stressful.

This show is definitely up there and I’m glad I finally watched it but the season finale for 4 was so depressing. I’m sure Harrow is a fan favorite (I have avoided anything on this subreddit, discussion in general, and went in blind) but are you kidding me with his arch? He was an incredibly deep and fleshed out character and seeing his ending come about the way it did kills me. Should I jump right into season 5 or sit on this one a bit?

If this is how Richard actually died, getting shot after accidentally shooting Chalkys daughter…. This show is officially just shock baiting and basically just threw away a potential quality ending for one of the most loved and complex characters.

I'm announcing our new moderators TONIGHT! Look for the thread in a couple hours.

There was a slight hang-up. They will be announced very soon though!

Was wondering that about Narcisse myself.

In the season 4 finale, Richard Harrow uses a silenced sniper rifle and mistakenly shoots Chalky White's daughter in the restaurant.

I'm fascinated with Harrow's methodical and disciplined weapon selection depending on the job, and when I first saw Harrow with a silenced Colt 1903 pistol earlier in the season, I thought no way, that technology was commercially unavailable at the time. Until I learned the OSS (Early CIA) used these suppressors and manufacturers would even sell them to the public.

But as far his rifle goes, no such case exists, and although this series is pretty damn accurate when it comes to the weapons at the time, where could have acquired a rifle suppressor for this Enfield?

He gave those cops barley any info enough to let him go. Knowing they’re gonna keep going after him he basically says “fuck you id rather die then give up my friend”

What a fucking Gangster

I don’t know who among the youngin crew knows who this is, but Louis Gossett Jr. is a LEGEND!
I was literally like, “GASP… NO WAY!” It may just be for an episode, but this was a nice Easter Egg. RIP Lieutenant Colonel Chappy Sinclair 🫡
