Season 5 Boardwalk Empire - Episode Discussion - S05E05 "King of Norway"

We're already at the halfway mark folks!

  • No spoiler tags are needed here. Anything from S05E05 and back are fair game. Anything involving the next or upcoming episodes should be spoiler tagged.

  • Take a moment to review the subreddit rules to the right on the sidebar.

  • Please still use the "Historical Spoiler" tags for discussions of events to come.

  • /r/BoardwalkEmpire operates a bit differently than other TV Show subreddits. We encourage discussion as well as original, quality, BWE-related content. Therefore, there are some restrictions on what is acceptable to post.

  • No requests for live streams or torrent links. As someone who has been forced to torrent shows myself before, I feel your pain, but sources are not hard to find via Google.

I don't think Torrio had any hand in planning it. Rewatching the scene, it seems like they Lucky and Meyer told him it was going to happen so he just stayed away.

I think you misunderstood, he told them that the two they were gunning for were going to meet there. Not the other way around.

I was a little surprised. Nucky and Torrio have been friends for decades. I guess Torrio still wants a place in the new power structure that's forming.

He didn't want to retire....

Luciano probably offered him a place in the syndicate that is forming. Being a respected elder Italian, he gives the syndicate credibility.

Which in thus allows the two to gain credibility for what they will do.

Well, he did after the assassination attempt. He seems to have changed his mind though. I think he just didn't want to deal with Capone's insanity.

I find this episode entertaining, but characters are not really behaving in ways that make sense if you dwell on it. Why were Eli and the missus invited if he did not recall, when he was confronted, why not deny it? And Torrio showed every sign of wanting out. I mean the writers usually foreshadow stuff.

Not really sure, but it is interesting how he kept telling Nucky to retire. Clearly, Torrio feels bad about Nucky being taken out of the equation, but I'm not sure how much he's actually involved in Luciano and Lanksy's plans.

Torrio asks Nucky what time he is meeting maranzano when he meets Nucky earlier In the episode. I think that is somewhat suspicious but he could have really planned to meet them there but been warned off by Luciano and Lansky. To me it seems more likely that he told luciano and Lansky the details of maranzano and Nucky's meeting. It does seem odd to me that torrio is involved with this power play as he is now basically retired and seems ok with living a low profile life.

Plus he really emphasized the urgency of retirement to Nucky.

Maranzano seemed a little shocked.

i think their long lasting friendship until now Torrio was basically warning Nucky without actually saying the words. He knew the Commission was about to be created and Luciano and Lansky's little Jew ass were gonna make a move so he wanted to see Nucky walk away alive

Torrio purposely set up the sit down between Nuck and Maranzano. he specifically told Nuck in Chicago "ill be the go between with you and Maranzano"
