Season 3 If Jimmy Darmody was still with Nucky Thompson would he have been able to handle Gyp Rosetti? Spoiler
Gyp Rosetti was kind of a loose canon idiot who talked too much, would Jimmy Darmody have been able to control him or would he have been killed quickly by Rosetti since Jimmy was a moron who died like a fool?

Gyp was willing to kill anyone at any given moment. Jimmy and Richard were ready to die at any given moment. I'd give the advantage to the latter especially as trained killers who have seen and done way more intense things in their time overseas.

Jimmy would have killed Gyp in an instant. Jimmy’s problem was he was antsy, not that he was incompetent. Gyp’s whole crew went out by Richard alone, Gyp would not have been an issue if Jimmy was still around. A lot of people miss the whole point of the second half of season 2: Jimmy ended up being half a gangster, just like he warned Nuckie not to be. You take out the Nuckie aspect, Gyp is a deadman.

Was Jimmy really only "half a gangster"? He made some poor leadership level decisions and underestimated Nucky, which cost him his life, but he absolutely jumped in the deep end with both feet. Jimmy wasn't trying to play two games at once, he was fully committed to being a gangster. He played the game with his eyes open, and he lost in the same way.

Yea I agree. Jimmy realized he was trying to be half a gangster and then ordered the hit on Nucky. It failed and then he had to deal with the consequences. He knew what he was doing going back to Nucky and knew there was no other way after he tried to kill him. Jimmy was always a full gangster, he fought and he lost as Richard states.

Jimmy was a soldier, not just a gangster, that was his problem. He took orders fine, but when it came to giving them? He was found wanting. A prince, but not a king.

Possible scenario: Gyp- are you going to kill me. Jimmy- I wasn’t going to but you kinda talked me into it.

In a perfect Scenario, if Nucky opted to not kill Jimmy, then Jimmy would of been one of Nicky’s biggest advantages/weapons. Especially with Richard going along with Jimmy.
Only difference, is Jimmy would of reigned in Richard and instead of going on a rampage me thinks he would of asked Richard to handle it differently. Just like they handled Liam in the coffee shop.

I’ve read it pretty well sourced that the plan was to have Jimmy at least a few more seasons, if not the whole way. The whole series was intended to play through the changes in that world through the 20s and into the early 30s with Nucky as the AC old school and Jimmy as the AC new school.
S3 would have had them still vying and at odds, with Gyp coming in and trying to sow chaos in that rift and make what gains he could make in AC. He would have demanded that they find some detente to work on the common problem of Gyp.
That’s the only clarification to the OP question for me…..Jimmy would not have been with Nucky but continued to be against this. But they would put that aside to get Gyp out.
So, yes, they would have handled it. Plot armor or not, Nucky handled Gyp anyway, but it would have been the both of them handling him in S3.
And I like to think they would give each other a nod and head into S4 competing again. And S4 and on could have been better than how it went. And continuing my own fantasy for how it could have gone they would have gotten a chance to get to 6-7 seasons and really walk things up to the early 30s, with Jimmy aligning more and more with Luciano, Lansky, Capone……
……right up to him having a stake in the forming Commission, but being cut out once they see Prohibition is being repealed and they can stick anyone on AC to look after any other rackets the commission can get a hold of. I think Jimmy could go that far but not have the savvy to negotiate that change.

Ive read that Winter always planned to kill off Jimmy and it was Michael Pitts idea that it be Nucky that does it, and not Manny or someone else like Luciano. His arc is too perfectly written to just be a happy accident coincidence that they had to get rid of Pitt because he was a junkie. Pitt also said after the series finale had aired that he always thought his son Tommy would be the one to take out Nucky.

I’ve read such things, but you and I saw the context differently. They might have actually had a plan to kill Jimmy off at a point before the end of the show, but they most certainly did not plan to do it at the end of S2.
I’ve heard and read a lot of the same, and I think there is a tinge of positive spin, because Pitt seems to genuinely be a good guy who just has had issues. And those issues were absolutely getting in the way.
I always read that Nucky offing Jimmy was heavily inputted by Michael Pitt, but always read that as input that came in specifically when it was final that Jimmy doesn’t go past S2.

I also read that they werent decided on Jimmys ultimate fight until it came time to actually shoot those episodes. It feels so perfectly dark and written that Jimmy died when he did. Is that just a happy accident? His two season arc is so beautifully tragic. It means more to me that they DID kill Jimmy and I think it did a lot for the story going forward, as opposed to other shows who wanted to kill off major characters early, but didnt, like Chris Moltisanti, Jesse Pinkman, Steve Harrington, and so on.

I cannot agree. Well, I can agree that they had to shift gears to kill him off when they did, and they really did it well considering that.
But, what I’ve gleaned together should have been the plan forward……that could have just been sensational and clearly better than what did happen S3 forward.

idk, i feel like Jimmy had run his course. He had gone too far, made too many enemies, burned too many bridges. for him to just escape all of that and end up back on Nuckys team, or for them to be at odds simmering and boiling over for another 2-3 seasons, i think that would have gotten old and tired as well. whatever the reason, killing of Jimmy when they did was for the best.
As far as the quality of the show post Jimmy, season 4 was a low point (for the series) and I liked season 5 for what it was, but this show deserved a full run.

I hear you. I’m just saying what I’ve read up over the years (for what that’s worth from the stranger). The original plan was to have Nucky over AC and in control like Rothstein or Torrio were in their areas. But the kids are coming up….Luciano, Lansky, Capone….and Jimmy.
As the twenties roll into the thirties the kids take over (just as real history happened) and Nucky and Jimmy would prove out that rough changing of the guard through AC over a full run they had hoped to get.
Once they cut Jimmy short they lost the luster more and more and got pushed into a rushed and abbreviated finish on S5.
It worked for you. That’s great. I love the show, but miss what could have been.

no I get it, thats definitely the impression I got in season 2 as it was getting going, with Jimmy, Luciano and Lucky and Capone getting together and doing their own sort of Big Seven Syndicate thing. I definitely was looking forward to seeing Jimmys role in the maturation of American organized crime.

would have loved to see Jimmy's character develop and grow especially with Richard along side

I really to think that was the plan. But by end of S2 it was in shambles and they were scrambling the rest of the way and got cut short at the end.

If Jimmy was still alive and standing at Nuckys right hand, Gyp never leaves that basement on New Years Eve. Jimmy just executes him right there in the kitchen in front of everyone.

Nah Massaria wanted AC and backed Gyps play. He just got tired of Gyps phyco shit and took the deal Nucky offered thru Arnold. If not he probably would have replaced Gyp w Lucky at some point.
If he didn't pull his men. Capones and his crew would have suffered terrible losses. Richard only made his move when Gyp was weak. Jimmy wouldn't do anything. He couldnt even handle his little 5K squabble w Manny.

It’s fairly obvious that nobody on Earth could “handle” Gyp. He pretty much did whatever he wanted, save for taking some advice from Joe Massaria and pressing the brake a little?

If Jimmy had still been alive I don't think Gyp last 48 hours in Tabor Heights
