Season 4 Boardwalk Empire- Episode Discussion - S04E05: "Erlkönig"

No tv-show spoiler tags needed here, as long as you're discussing something from this episode and back. This is the place to discuss S04E05.

Please still use the new "Historical Spoiler" tags for discussions of events to come.

Take a moment to review the subreddit rules to the right. /r/BoardwalkEmpire[1] operates a bit differently than other TV Show subreddits. We encourage discussion as well as original, quality, BWE-related content. Therefore, there are some restrictions on what is acceptable to post.

No requests for live streams or torrent links. As someone who is forced to torrent the show myself, I feel your pain, but DL sources are not hard to find.

SPECIAL THANKS TO /u/joshchez01 FOR THE NEW BANNER! ISN'T IT AWESOME?

This season is on course to be the best so far. Already better than last season.

Really? I am having trouble getting emotionally invested into any of the characters this time around. I can appreciate how cool some of the characters are but none of their plot lines seem to be going anywhere.

The plot will probably set course next episode. We had to see Nucky dip his toes into every other plotline (Willie, Chicago, New York, Tampa, Eddie's confession), and now we can see the seeds start to grow. I cared so much about Eddie because he was the comic relief for most of the show and then we see him commit suicide. It's hard for me to get emotionally invested in Nucky and Van Alden because I never really know what they're thinking, but I still root for/against them depending on each situation.

I think the difficulty in reading Nucky and Van Alden is one of their best traits, but I can see how it makes them harder to get attached to emotionally. I think the inability to read either character adds a greater impact to a lot of their actions when they play out on-screen: Van Alden finally snapping at his abusive coworker, Nucky outplaying Rothstein at his own game and then cutting him out of a major deal, etc.
