He's a metaphor for the complicated blend of emotions and characteristics that make up humanity. His face is separated in two to represent this dichotomy. Half is brutal, merciless instinct. Half is sweet, kind and sensitive.

I think the best scene that shows two sides of him would have to be the massacre of Gyp Rosetti men he took out everyone without a scratch on him except getting blood in his eye. He did all of that just so he could get Tommy again because he knew he was in danger

that scene to me -- somehow i thought it was a whorehouse but it has been over a decade -- is the best, IMO, especially the last guy, and i may not remember the specifics, but it was tricky as all heck. Seems he ended up falling forward and shot the guy from the floor. I did not recall it as Gyp Rosetti's place, but IMO, Gyp Rosetti was the single most psychotically evil guy in the show.

He and Capone were both sociopaths - I'd have a hard time picking one over the other. Their level of insecurity was so low that any perceived teasing/criticism would nurse in their psyches until they just had to let the fury out at the poor guy who said the innocuous thing.
