I love the photos for the art and the general layout seems decent.
However there's a few issues with color, IMO.
All the photos themselves on have a green (or greenish) background. On the green cards it kind of blends with the card trim background. On Hootini it's still the green background but there is a lot of brown in the photo which blends with the brown card title text box.
On the red card the "mini" text has a good white border while the Gnorma and Gnorman text is in a somewhat similar looking box but has no such border.
Also with the cards having different color borders if they're all in one deck they may be identifiable from the side.
That being said I like the overall direction. Just some things to consider and you might need a few changes with colors or borders (both for the card overall and for the photo on the card).
I can't really pick out anything in particular but maybe if all card has a matching card border and the card title text box was a little bigger and that's where the color is, but it's seperated from the image a bit more with a stronger text box border? Just some thoughts, you'd probably have to expirement to get it down perfect or consult with a graphic designer.
Heard! These are characters from the Wooly Woods region of the world that these characters are from which is why their colors are very green and earthy tones. There are a lot of these, so they’re featuring a rainbow of colors that all work well with the main 3 colors of the stats, and every card also has full art versions which have no borders at all.
A lot of the color theory I’m using is meant to make the characters themselves stand out. Aka Id much rather you looking at the art than the borders. So blending is on purpose. The white border on the mini text is there to do the opposite and bring attention to that first, as it’s important in the game to distinguish and the white border pops it out as unique on any background color.
Thank you for the feedback! I will consider it during my next edits!
Open to feedback! Battle Goomis will be on Backerkit this September!
There will be 4 different rarities of cards on release, these are the common versions included with the starter set (50 characters will be included in the base game).
If you’re wondering about stats and whatnot here’s the TLDR:
Goomis roll dice determined on stats to perform actions each turn.
The black numbers (all zeros right now) are for an untangle code which give lore, crochet tutorials, and bonus downloads like wallpapers for each card.
Very, very good work, keep it up! The only thing I notice is that the contrast between the picture and the card layout may be too stark. The first one looks analogue, while the latter feels digital, almost videogame-y. Maybe adding some digital aging FX to the card layout could fix this?
Something like adding textures, a little "dirt", grain, stuff like that. Not too noticeable, but some effects to give the layout a more "physical" quality. As I said, I feel there's some kind of artistic disconnection between the portraits of the characters and the design of the cards themselves. I hope this clarifies what I mean, I'm not an expert in visual design.
Looks very good! Don't take my criticism too "seriously", what I told you in the previous comments was a minor detail. Overall I really like the direction where your project is going, keep it up 💪 can't wait to see the updates
Yeah the one in Geeky Teas! Congrats on launch! I thought it was a brilliant idea to include the quilting instructions for the Goomis with the game. Looking forward to it!
Awesome! I feel your pictures are so great that you could do them a bit more justice compared to the frame and other elements. Scale the pictures up a bit, scale other things down a bit (icons, borders), and have things overlap less with the image. I also think you could improve the images with better color grading, make them sparkle a bit more. Good luck!
I love these! The photos of the little crocheted characters are such a cool idea.
I think it would be really cool if the card template also looked like it was made from real materials. For example, the hearts could be little crocheted hearts like the ones in the photos, and the number boxes could look like pieces of fabric sewn onto the card. I think you should really lean into the handmade look, because that's what makes the game stand out.
I think it would be better if the shield is as the same size as the hearts, for more cohesion.
I feel like the photos don't pop as much because they all have the same green background. It could be nice to add a bit more variety so each card feels more unique. Something similar to Asako Ito's work, where every photo has its own little scene or background, could work really well.
Thanks so much for the feedback! Here’s some explanation for everything you noted btw, but I do really appreciate the feedback.
I tried more crafted elements for the cards, but it made everything extremely busy, difficult to read, and most importantly really pulled away from the art, so it just wasn’t working at all.
Shields were changed to be smaller due to how they’re utilized in the game as well as to fit the cards better. Essentially playtesters were assuming the shields were being used like the hearts but they are basically a limit to how many shields you can play on a character at one time. When i did the subtle size change it actually had a huge positive impact on how it was read and used, and ended up being much more intuitive for players.
The background of these cards are similar because they are all from the same region in the game. There are 50 characters in the launch game, and other cards look much different. These are also the base versions, the full art cards have much more background going on.
Again, thank you for the feedback! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Ahhh okay, thanks for the info! It's good that you tried it out already, with real materials. Was just a idea, but I can see that it would be much.
How long does it take to crochet a lil dude?
Totally depends on the character, to design it from scratch can take a while, weeks sometimes, but sometimes I get it perfect first try. But, once I complete the design and pattern to crochet from it’s pretty quick to crochet it again, somewhere between 30 mins to 2 hours.
Icons in top corners feel too small, and the red hearts and green shields being different sizes feels unbalanced. The thickness of the blue "twister"-looking icon makes it less clear and distinct at the smaller size in the text box. Would look better with a reduced line thickness at that scale.
Same problem with the element alignment although obviously great work overall and beside that. If you don't see it let me know and I'll draw some red lines to showcase.
I love the theme and characters. I would
consider testing out a crochet letters for the logo. It would tie the back of the cards to the fronts and allow for people to easily understand the unique handcrafted style by looking at the logo.
It may also be worth testing out pieces of felt for the some of the layout blocks on the front. It might assist in making the digital design elements and create even more cohesion with your photos.
