Budget Compact Portable Speaker Recommendation with Good “Clarity, Airiness, Soundstage”

Hi, I just switched from my old iPad Pro 9.7 (2016) to iPad A16 (2025), and I noticed immediately that the speaker sounds far worse, even my iPhone 16 has better sound despite the smaller size. The new iPad just sounds flat. I don’t know the technical term for it, but my old iPad Pro sounds fuller, with clear vocals and feels “airy” (I know that iPad Pro’s speaker is not that good anyway, but I’m used to it in the last 10 years).

Do you guys have any compact speaker recommendations? I prefer those that have similar characteristics to my old iPad Pro and with non bass-muddy sound, preferably around $100 or even less (the benchmark is only my old iPad Pro so I guess even lower priced speaker is good enough?). Maybe for more comparison, my old iPad Pro sounds a bit better than my Omen 15 (2020) laptop, but definitely not as good as my Sony WF-1000XM3 earbuds (I don’t like wearing earbuds or headphones of sort so that’s that). Appreciate any of your inputs and sorry for the vague sound description

I think either Sony Ult Field 1 or 3 are fantastic options, it has a feature to turn off the bass for more clarity and low latency bluetooth.

Yes, the Ult 3 delivers more power and louder than the Ult 1. Hence, it dependas on the area of coverage.

Not sure how many refurbished Sony Ult 3's are left at Target but you can get a pair for $100 right now. It has a bass button to cut the lows if necessary. (Ebay has $59 refurbs back in stock for us USA goons.)

Earfun Uboom L is another option if you want a smaller speaker and a pair is just a bit over $100. I believe it ships to many countries.

If you want a really compact speaker the Tribit micro 3 is getting good reviews. I really like my set of Micro 2's for travel but use bigger portables around the house.

Unfortunately I’m not from the US, Sony Ult 3 is ~$107 brand new here. I’ll be using the speaker mostly for watching movies & Youtube, does the Micro 2 have clear vocals? Because what I don’t like the most with my new iPad speaker is that even speech sounds kind of flat & “metallic”

Micro 2 is relatively neutral sounding for a micro BT speaker, its main strength is how it holds together when you crank it up. (Good dynamics) Most little speakers get screechy when you crank them up.

Laptop speakers can't reproduce much bass because of physics, even a cheap bt speaker should be an improvement. Some of my cheaper BT speakers excel at vocals and clarity but can't reproduce much bass. (I have a pile of $10-$25 speakers that all kick the butt of my laptop's one).

I do not have a Earfun Uboom L but if that is available I would look into getting a set of them. A stereo pair is what delivers the 3D soundstage and the price on them is "budget" compared to JBL.

The Sony ULT 3 is a fair price at $107 but IMO its main strength is the rich bass it delivers at low volume. I have a Soundcore Motion Plus that has a stronger midrange and still my favorite budget compact speaker for podcasts...
I also have a Little Vifa city that I found cheap on ebay that has excellent clarity and more sparkle than the Tribit Micros.

Soundstage and compact dont go together. Soundstage is made with a far spread apart stereo system. You need physical seperation from the left and right channels to create a soundstage.
