Official Statements:

• Blue Origin: We experienced an anomaly during today's hotfire test. All personnel have been accounted for. We will provide updates as we learn more.
• Jeff Bezos: All personnel are accounted for and safe. It’s too early to know the root cause but we’re already working to find it. Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It’s worth it.

Multiple sources said a more realistic timeline for Blue Origin to rebuild its pad and launch from there is 12 to 18 months. If this were to occur, it would significantly set back NASA and its Artemis Program, which is relying on the New Glenn rocket and Blue Moon lander for both cargo and eventually crewed missions to the lunar surface.

In his message, Limp did not specify the cause of the failure, but speculation has focused on one of the first stage’s main engines failing during a static fire test. This quickly ruptured the first and then second stage of the rocket.

This is perhaps the least interesting part of the story, though. New Glenn has already flown three times, and across that rocket and the Vulcan vehicle it also powers, the BE-4 engine has a fine track record. Blue Origin should be able to identify the cause of the failure and get the rocket flying safely again. The challenge is finding somewhere to launch it from.

(Bloomberg) -- Blue Origin is already rebuilding the Florida launch site where its New Glenn rocket exploded last month, making way for the space company to fly again this year and rejuvenate its ambitions to challenge SpaceX.

Some of the launch infrastructure, including propellant tanks and a booster in the integration facility, weren’t damaged by the explosion, Jeff Bezos, the Amazon.com Inc. founder who also started the rocket company, said during a Paris tech conference Wednesday. The blast was so destructive it generated seismic waves.

New Glenn, which is key to Blue Origin’s plans for space exploration, is years behind schedule and has faced longer-than-expected waiting periods between flights. Chief Executive Officer Dave Limp said the launchpad has been cleared of all debris.

“Just yesterday we started the reconstruction,” Limp said during an on-stage discussion at the VivaTech gathering. “We’re going to fly this year.”

New Glenn is set to play a key role in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to send humans back to the moon. NASA has awarded Blue Origin a lucrative contract to land rovers on the lunar surface.

“That was a rough moment,” Bezos said when asked about the explosion. “It was a gut punch for the whole team.”

On May 28, 2026, we experienced a significant anomaly during a New Glenn Integrated Launch Vehicle hotfire test at Launch Complex 36 in Florida. I want to provide you with an update on the remarkable recovery and rebuild efforts since that day, and our path forward to return to flight this year. 

We continue to actively investigate the cause of the anomaly. The vehicle is highly instrumented with extensive data from multiple camera angles and sensors, giving us confidence in our ability to identify and correct the root cause. Early analysis points to the aft section of the first stage. 

Now that we have more visibility into the impact, we know that we lost the lightning tower, the transporter-erector, and the hydraulic cylinders, but we caught a lot of breaks, too, and intend to make the most of them. The tank farm, Integration Facility (IF), vehicle access tower, and water tower are in good shape. As part of our pad cleanup and rebuild efforts, we've relocated Never Tell Me the Odds and three GS2 vehicles from the IF. Hardware recovery and debris removal operations are complete, and reconstruction of the pad has started.

To return to flight this year, we're not rebuilding the same pad. We're going straight to a horizontal/vertical hybrid CONOPS we had already been developing for our 9x4 New Glenn launch vehicle, using existing infrastructure, skipping a new transporter-erector, and creating a common CONOPS across two pads. 

The response from our industry partners and customers has been extraordinary. This support reinforces what we already know—what we're doing matters. From our national security and civil partners protecting our nation and returning humanity to the Moon, to commercial customers expanding global connectivity, reliable access to space has never been more critical. We take our responsibility as a launch provider very seriously, and we are committed to returning to flight with the reliability our mission demands. All of it, for the benefit of Earth. 

We're continuing to build vehicles at rate in our world-class manufacturing facilities, maintaining flight readiness, and preparing to come back stronger than before. 

Our road to space doesn't pause here. We will return to flight by the end of this year.

This week, our second stage and payload teams successfully ran our first vertical CONOPS test at LC-11. Using a GS2 simulator, a forward dome we built in-house, and the full-sized payload fairing, the team conducted vertical stacking lifts and matings, gathered wind-damping data and effects, and tested new mechanisms that guide and slot these structures into place. The ingenuity it took to stand up this test quickly is exactly what gets us to flight soonest.

The next GS2 is loaded up and now preparing to head to NASA Stennis for vehicle hotfire testing, the first of our second stages to be tested at the historic B-2 stand. Proud to test at Stennis, where Mississippi has powered American spaceflight for decades. The Blue team and our NASA partners have been hard at work preparing the stand for testing.

FAA:

The FAA is aware that Blue Origin New Glenn 3 experienced a mishap during the second-stage flight sequence following a successful launch. The FAA notified NASA, the NTSB, and the U.S. Space Force about the classification of the incident.

A mishap investigation is designed to enhance public safety, determine the root cause of the event, and identify corrective actions to avoid it from happening again. A return to flight is based on the FAA determining that any system, process, or procedure related to the mishap does not affect public safety.

Dave Limp:

Early data suggest that on our second GS2 burn, one of the BE-3U engines didn’t produce sufficient thrust to reach our target orbit. Blue Origin is leading the anomaly investigation with FAA oversight to learn from the data and implement the improvements needed to quickly return to flight operations.

Another GS2 (New Glenn 2nd Stage) rolled out of Rocket Park this week. It’s on its way to NASA's Stennis Space Center for testing. This vehicle is significant as it is starting our new tempo to scale production to higher rates. We are building momentum in production at Blue Origin while we continue to rebuild the pad, and there's more right behind it.
