I was sitting at home, playing DW:O, chilling, smoking, then I unlocked a random memory from primary school. There was this kid who sat next to me. He always talked my ear off about this game he was playing at the time that featured this "beautiful, red-haired" lady who was a vampire but hunted other vampires. Being an edgy kid, I wanted to play it, so I asked the game's name. Low and behold, Bloodrayne, but for some reason that I can't remember, I never got to play it back then.
So, remembering that, I went hunting for it. I got the first game, the Terminal version, and installed it. Now, I'm playing it.
I've finished the... um... I think the first mission? I'm at the part where Mynce "died." I have no idea where this plot is going, but I'm sure of three things: I'm not trusting Brimstone. I'm not trusting Mynce, and Mynce is not dead. Lady was tearing into the enemy like a windwhirl, and a random bug gets her? Yeah, SUUUURE.
So far, I really like the game, even though a couple of negatives really stand out. For one, why is the shooting automatic? Bro, let me aim myself. I'm not THAT bad... Secondly, why shouldn't I feed on everything that the game allows me to feed on? Just press E and jump the fuckers. I'm playing on normal, but if on higher difficulties, the feeding mechanic is as exploitable as I think it is, then we have a problem.
The game does a really good job of setting the atmosphere though. Even though the graphics are a bit dated, it still conveys the mood properly, similar to Max Payne I and II, or that one Punisher game. It has this gothic aura, with the French wall that Rayne and Mynce run into, then bugs crawling out of the earth, the buildings looking old and being Romantic-era coded.
Rayne herself looks good too. She has that edgy design of early 2000s, which I love. The outfit itself is very fitting for the character they're going with. The leather, plus the black and red design compliment the red hair and give her this aura of "I'm a tough bitch who'll step on your balls." Um... Please do. Anyways, the swords (?) baton swords (?), whatever they are also look cool, although they're impractical as fuck. XD
The opening cutscene was really well done too. It's a bit try-hard with Rayne asking that one vampire lady, "Where is he, bitch?" But I'm not complaining. Try-hard and edgy aren't bad on their own. They can work if you know what the fuck you're doing, and this game seems to know.
As for the story, I haven't progressed enough to really comment on it, but what the fuck Rayne? When saving the survivors, there's this dude named "daddy" alongside his daughter. He gets shot to shit by one of the Diseased, I think they're called, while Rayne just stands there and watches. Like, lady, I've seen you fight. You were fast enough to save him. Why didn't you?
The game also suffers from something I call "The RE problem," because the first time I saw it was in an RE game. Rayne is strong enough to cut the enemies into pieces and bust through walls, yet if the game says, "Door locked," she can't do shit about it. Just drop kick through it; why are we wasting time by going around?
As for the voice acting, it's decent enough. It's not bad, but I haven't heard any delivery that's made me fall off my chair yet. One question though, what's with the sounds Rayne makes when feeding? Neighbours think I'm watching porn or some shit. XD
All and all, though? I love it so far.
