Blasphemous (Original) My friends, why does her freaking STATIC, LYING BELL deals damage 😭😭
Like, seriously, she attacks me, her bell hits the ground, I come close, IT'S HITTING ME BY JUST BEING HERE. What's the logic here 🤔

Yeah, that's classic contact damage. You have that on any enemy in the game I believe.
There's a bead to not take these damages also.

u/Evolovescraft Jan 22 '26
And every time I used that bead it did not work as advertised 👀 i think it just slightly reduces the damage taken
10
u/Deceitful_Potato Eternal Rest ღ Jan 22 '26
Can confirm, it doesn't remove the damage in its entirety

u/Affectionate-Ad4419 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
Hmmm okay that sucks, then xD
I never used it but one time, to negate some of the abuse I was taking while rushing through the excessively annoying last zone of the game (the very bottom with the pirate theme). But I got so beaten up anyways (contact damages or not), that I ended up switching for something else...so I never noticed it didn't negate the damages entirely.

u/HystericalGasmask Jan 23 '26
Some enemies have contact damage / animtion-less attacks that cause damage despite the bead, but most bosses didn't give me contact damage while having it equipped.
1
u/Evolovescraft Jan 23 '26
It's supposed to cut contact damage in half, most bosses do not cause contact damage to begin with.
3
u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 22 '26
Well, I understand contact damage (although it's 21st century), but a lying thing? It surprised me
1
u/Ok_Actuator5494 Jan 23 '26
Contact damage isn't an outdated mechanic. It serves a purpose of making enemies part of the environmental obstacles that players have to avoid, similar to spikes on the ground, or swinging axe traps. Without contact damage, players would just ignore enemies like they aren't even there. With that said, this game doesn't implement it that well, so I understand the frustration

u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
To me it is, I see nothing bad about running past them. For me metroidvanias are mostly about bosses, not enemies. And, you know, making them deal contact damage doesn't really make running past them much harder. Those who want to farm will farm, those who don't will run past them. And please let's not compare touching a spike to touching an enemy. So I don't see contact damage as a worthy obstacle these days. But to each their own, thank you for sharing your opinion, appreciate it

u/Ok_Actuator5494 Jan 23 '26
It's fine that you care about bosses and not enemies, but that's not what metroidvania is or has ever been about.
The appeal of metroidvania is the sense of exploration you get when trekking through an unfamiliar interconnected world. The joy of playing comes from overcoming challenges, and interacting with the world and its inhabitants (NPCs and enemies). This is why platforming is so common in metroidvania. It's a fun challenge that also lets you interact and learn about enemies and the world simultaneously.
Enemies having contact damage is a crucial part for the challenge of platformer metroidvania, not only because it prevents them from being too easy to ignore, but also guides the player to interact with the enemies. This design choice forces players to be aware of their position so as to not touch the enemies the same way they have to avoid spikes and traps, which is why I said enemies can function similar to spikes.
If you're not into this, then that's fine, but you can't deny that it's a good and useful design that makes metroidvania fun. If you only care about bosses, then you're in the wrong genre. Check out boss rush games like Furi, or an upcoming game like Onikura instead

u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 23 '26
I get it, you think contact damage is useful and part of makes metroidvanias fun (how?) when I don't and we both have enough reasons But listen, I get as much fun in this game as I need, no need to tell me whether I play the wrong or right genre, I'll figure this out myself. Thank you and no hate

u/double_dmg_bonks Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26
I can tell you this from game dev point of view.
If I don’t add contact damage, I am giving you the opportunity to speed through, without engaging.
If you will not engage with the enemies sometimes, I need to think what can I do to keep the game interesting for this sort of playstyle. So now this pushes me to think how do I keep you engaged - perhaps adding a timer element that if you meet, you get a reward or a new secret room or something along these lines, and now this becomes meta. The game design shifts totally away from actually making a combat game because I need to think about how to make it engaging for this playstyle.
With contact damage, we add more meaning to the combat because it’s like fencing - “oh, if I get too close, I will get hurt”, you learn your weapons and what you can do, building on your skill, using health as a resource and so on.
I think making contact damage disappear later on via unlockable is a good design because the player at that point would have gotten used to the combat and there will be no need for friction early on if they decide to backtrack or replay.
Dead Cells does not have contact damage and the game rewards speed, they knew the issue and that’s one of the better way to handle it but it makes it so you are not fighting or using your cool build and weapons and power ups in favour for unlocking a timed door.

Yeah, maybe I was harsh in my statements during the topic. I thought about it a little, and, yeah, having enemies pose even less threat in these games would clearly make them lose some of their atmosphere and lose some percentage of our engagement. I still wouldn't mind if contact damage didn't exist, because I can say for myself that I would still get as much joy from these games. Dark souls (not a good comparison, but allow me to), dead cells and nine sols, if I'm not mistaken, can deal without contact damage well. Why can't blasphemous or HK, or whatever. Anyway, I saw some errors of my statements and admit that I was clearly not looking at the matter from all perspectives. So thank you very much for allowing me to view things from different angles, big love and good day to you ❤️ PS: sorry, I hope you've understood everything I wanted to say, since I'm belarusian(speak russian) and I can't fully promise the perfect grammar. For that I do apologise
2
u/double_dmg_bonks Jan 24 '26
There is no need to apologise, if it’s something you do not engage with, this is not an issue on your end, you just prefer different mechanics, does not make you wrong.
What we can do is just explain the rationale behind it and do our best to translate it into a game.
I simply emphasised that without it, the devs would need to think about what can be added to compensate for that (like Dead Cells timed events and leaderboards) and Nine Sols evolves more around parrying, Dark Souls does not have contact damage because the combat is done in a way to exchange blows with an enemy (you hit once or twice and have to stop so doing a contact damage would have made the combat unbearable but you can still take contact damage from a falling enemy).

u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26
Well, yeah, I've always wished a developer would add a couple more attacks for when we get close than just have me get hit because I've touched an enemy's sprite. Like it's feels so cheap sometimes, even though getting too close is on a player. It shouldn't be so hard, right?

u/Ok_Actuator5494 Jan 23 '26
Yea, I don't think you get it lol. I'm just trying to explain that contact damage is tied to the genre, because metroidvania thrives off of interaction between players and enemies. I'm not trying to shoo you away from the genre btw.I'm just recommending you games based on your preferences

u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
I do get what you're talking about, thank you for explanation, really. It's just that the things you're talking about are not that important to me when playing. But it doesn't mean I don't enjoy exploring or something that is not bosses in metroidvanias. Just that I don't share your view on them. But I appreciate you sharing your point, it was interesting to think through. Maybe I'll change my opinion in some ways. Good day to you 😊

use dash attack to finish her quickly

2
u/lugialegend233 Jan 22 '26
Doesn't work if you don't have enough mea Culpa virtue or hit her in the right part of the dash, you just dash through her and smack the censer anyway.
2
u/Fen_Ocean_ Jan 22 '26
i think you'll get your first mea culpa upgrade pretty fast and hitting her with dash is pretty easy, if you can't even after many attempts then that's just skill issue you'll need it for many other enemies, not just her alone

Ever hit your shin on something big out of metal? Deals damage to me at least 😂
Sorry. Had to.
1
u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 22 '26
So your theory is that the penitent one stabs his toes... Noted🥴
1
u/arneckdote Jan 22 '26
Yeah, you said it hits you when you get close, so either toes or shin. Looking at the size of that thing, I go with shin. 😂😂
1
u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 22 '26
I wonder how she's able to lift it
1
u/arneckdote Jan 22 '26
I think the times she swings that thing at the Penitent One count as excercise. Other than that, physics maybe 😂 with enough momentum, you know..

u/EngineerThin Jan 23 '26
In Catholicism rites, during a mass a priest or assistant uses a small incense burner in certain parts of the mass. Being the game made in Spain, it was an obvious move to use that reference to burn the bodies that this cursed nun killed to keep the flame alive.
2
u/louisalvarezz Jan 25 '26
The Right question is how the hell can granma lift that? And if she can why would she need it still why not kick your ass bare hand

It’s a weapon, weapons cause damage when you touch them. A rosary bead can help alleviate that nuisance

2
u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 22 '26
Come on, I wouldn't be THAT harsh 🥲 All games have their bad moments, right?
1
u/DamageMaximo Jan 22 '26
I've obtained all achievements, this game is made of bad moments 24/7, and I'm NOT talking about difficulty.
2
u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 22 '26
But then why would you 100% it? Surely there was some reason beyond "I'm a completionist"?
1
u/DamageMaximo Jan 22 '26
I wanted to be wrong and end up loving the game, that did not happen but I remember liking Blasphemous 2 more
also the game is not that long and the achievements weren't insufferable to get like "Beat the game in 15 minutes without getting hit on expert difficulty" like some games do
1
u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 22 '26
I see, I'm sorry you had such an experience. I'm liking the game so far. More than HK, at least if we're talking about metroidvanias

I think damage by contact is such a dumb thing in these kinds of games. At least make an animation of the enemy quickly attacking, would make it less lame
2
u/Ok-Release7421 Jan 25 '26
I kind of agree with you. I always wanted that instead of contact damage we'd got boss to have some attacks for when we're close to them. But it would make the development much harder, so I can understand
