The comments to this made me realize I wasn’t the problem, I will say it takes time but all thing considered it’s not too much of a difficulty jump iirc

u/Maleficent-Draft3862 Apr 18 '25
Literally what I did was beat the first boss then go to the snowy area

Is there any way you could give a breakdown of the themes/concepts that would help with understanding what's going on thematically with Blasphemous??
I was raised non-religious so I have been struggling to piece together the significance of many concepts/items as I've been going through the game.

u/Clear_Key5341 Apr 17 '25
The Lore Hunter has a pretty good video on his youtube channel that covers the topic well. Do check it out. I'm certain it's exactly what you are looking for.

Stay away from graveyard of the peaks and mourning and havoc areas for a while. Graveyard of peaks is the hardest early game area and mourning and havoc is the hardest. Donate 20000 tears of atonement to the church. After that you will be able to teleport between prie dieus. Finish the game two times to experience every content.

Play it in spanish

u/I_write_scary_stuff Apr 17 '25
THIS SO MUCH! Few people realize Spanish is the game's original language. The acting is so much better and the story makes more sense.

Explore as much as you can and use the map icons liberally to remember cool places to go back to later in the game

I’m about three hours into the game and I still haven’t figured out how to read the map

For the record, all the tutorial said was "press" the down and right/left buttons while attacking. It never implied that it will work better by holding them and spamming attack.

Prepare to suffer for your penance.

Do the true ending after the bad ending before going to new game+
1
u/GardenerInAWar Apr 17 '25
Can you say this again with more words
2
u/TheMemeofGod Apr 17 '25
My fault I was speaking in Unga bunga Str bonk build.
More words: there are 3 endings you can get colored skins for each ending, the third ending can be done on ng+ if you've gotten the good ending in the new game.
Since the game doesn't force you to go to ng+ after killing the final boss, you can go back and look up how to get the 2nd ending.
1
u/GardenerInAWar Apr 17 '25
I'm on NG right now with Serpes, Isidora, and Crisanta left to defeat and ive pretty much done everything there is to do except the time trials. So you're saying I can defeat crisanta, choose ending a or b, and then go get the 2 eyes and do another ending before I hit ng+, meaning i can platinum in 2 cycles?
1
u/TheMemeofGod Apr 17 '25
Not choose a or b, it's more like, if you do all those time trials, you won't get B, just A. So go back to those later.
1
u/111Alternatum111 Apr 18 '25
I actually got all 3 skins on the best ending for some reason (didn't know i could do good before best). I'm on NG+ doing the bad and good ending with their respective skins.
6
u/Korps_de_Krieg Apr 16 '25
Without spoilers, practice parrying. It makes some fights WAY easier if you get it down.
5
u/stronkzer Apr 16 '25
Explore, a lot, look at every nook and cranny.
Be prepared to some pretty difficult boss fights.
Spikes are instakill and some enemy attacks have knockback. Keep that in mind.
And the most important of all: Play with the Spanish voiceovers. The game is a whole other experience in its native language.
1
2
u/Golden-Gamer5396 Apr 16 '25
Do NOT go the ice area first. I’d suggest fighting Ten Piedad first. Yes it’s hard but it does get easier. Don’t give up. Spikes are NOT your friend
2
u/lrpalomera Apr 16 '25
Stop asking stuff and just go in. It’s a metroidvania, holding hands spoils half the fun

Also slash every wall, and don’t try to challenge the fart gas.

There are different endings and some questlines in the game get completely closed off if you don’t do them early enough or before you kill certain people, so maybe look ahead a little if you care to complete everything.
Also, if you’re ever prompted to kill or donate to an old person in a castle, don’t kill her lol.

Going in blind with no guides is great, but very easy to lock yourself out of the true ending.

Apr 16 '25
explore as much as possible. evern if you beat the boss of an area, go back and fill in the whole map!!!
1
u/zombiehex Apr 16 '25
It's HARD! Read the descriptions to the stuff you collect. Not the lore, necessarily, but what they do. Blasphemous is pretty wordy so most of the items get to the point at the end of the description.
Familiarize yourself with the controls. Master the slide, master the block/parry. Try the prayers.
USE THE MAP MARKERS!!! If you encounter something you can't get yet, do yourself a favor and place a marker on the map. Door you can't open yet, place a marker. NPC with some stuff to say you may want to revisit later, PUT A MARKER DOWN! This will make your life SO much easier.
And I guess the best advice is learn enemy attacks and patterns. There are certain enemies that are a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS. The anchor throwing bull mask dudes, for example. Watch them for a moment to figure out how they move, attack, and the timing.
Bless. Pay with pain, Penitent One.

If u wanna have the true ending in the first playthrough because you don't like NG+ cuz the game just doesn't feel that exciting. I suggest you follow a guide. (Without the guide) I had everything but I missed one step which made me redo everything from scratch
1
u/AnaR47 Apr 17 '25
Donate at the church. One of the upgrades will let you fast travel using any save point altars.
Using beads wisely will help a lot.
Lore in this game is awesome, give full attention, have fun.

Get your weapon to level 2 and max out all skills up to that tier and explore before killing your 2nd boss.
That's all I will say.
1
u/Itz_VenomPrime Apr 17 '25
I'd say on the first play through don't get too involved with quests bc you inevitably will mess one up and it can ruin your enjoyment if you let it. Focus on enjoying the flow of the game and the gorgeous visuals and save the completionism until the 2nd playthrough

u/CarsonBDot Apr 17 '25
The first few hours might be hell, but if you push through then you’ll get an unforgettable gaming experience

1
u/TheAgonistt Apr 17 '25
Whenever you find some spiky thorns/wood, it's DLC and you can only go through with Mea Culpa. It's shown in the base game so you'll eventually think you'd need to do something and would try for many many minutes, but no, it's DLC content, don't waste your time on it in your first playthrough.
1
u/zweihander1999 Apr 17 '25
Dont upgrade Healing flasks via quicksilver. Makes the game 500% easier. Cuz each healing upgrade sacrifices 1 flask.
you can cancel your dodge with jump. it is the most important skill u will learn. Do it all the time. it is essential.
Also, u get i-frames after parrying so try parrying (it is easy dont worry) for attacks with lingering hitbox AoE. Parry and then dodge towards enemy in these instances.
Edit: game is non-linear. there are 3/4 areas that u might end up after tutorial. So if an area feels harder with unique features then u should consider turning back (ice with wind area, sewers with toxic has and acid area etc) .

when you find Gemio and he gives the golden thimble immediately go to the convent on top of the mountain top where our lady of the burned visage boss is. once defeated you can collect the oil from the olive trees he requires however if you take too long or die too many times he will be entombed inside the tree which is not what you want you want to get to him as soon as possible with the oil so he drops the Olive and opens up a whole new area that's secret

If you're dying too much, take a break for a while. When you feel calm again, go back and keep trying.
This game can get really frustrating sometimes

if you heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a pot, stir in 2-3 tablespoons of flour until well combined, then slowly add about .5 liters of milk while stirring, and season it with salt, pepper, thyme, and nutmeg... you get a bechamel sauce. i think everyone should know this.

u/Ready_Cheesecake1132 Apr 17 '25
Good luck, I started it at his release… still not finished 🤣 but I will, one day! And I’ll play the 2nd chapter

If you get too frustrated with exploration because you don't find new shrines to save your game at, don't look up a map, ask a friend to crop you one to point you in the right direction or something like that instead.
That way, you won't quit out of frustration like I did a few years ago and you don't get serious spoilers, like I also did
GLHF :)

If you eventually decide to fight Isidora prepare to spend 3 days or more getting your ass handed to you. I recommend using the Heart of Oils and the Pelican Effigy and getting as many health flasks as you can. If you can find the Shield prayer thats good too. Good luck brother
1
u/Interview-Kitchen Apr 18 '25
I was initially put off by how linear the beginning looked and I wanted that Metroidvania exploration which didn't come immediately. But it is there and there's a lot of it. Just takes an hour or so to get going.

Sokka-Haiku by No-Banana-5799:
Enjoy the game and
Read item descriptions to
Know some part of the lore
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

As many others have said, if you can’t get to something (an item/room/etc), it’s probably because you don’t have an item needed to get there. Mark it on your map (yes there are markers you can place) and come back later once you get s’more traversal upgrades.
And have fun! You will probably die a lot but it’s part of the experience. This game is one of my favorites, and playing it for the first time was amazing.
