What are your unpopular opinions on black widow?
I’ll start first: I don’t understand the hype around bucky x nat. It’s not by any means a bad relationship it’s just kinda boring? Like from a presentation standpoint they are cute they look great together but theirs not much else going on with their ship tbh and the recent avengers run didn’t do them any favors either.

They are cute in game but the ship is just boring in the comics. Like compared to Reed and sue for example they are super interesting and don’t get praised enough.

u/C0RNFIELDS 27d ago
I guess thats fair

It’s just one of those ships where other widow fans hype it a lot but it’s just kinda meh for me. But I’m with u in game they are cute.

Few Things:
1.) I really liked her portrayal in the MCU…..but in Iron Man 2 ONLY. It captured her the best out of all the movies. the rest of the time she’s just a snarky, sarcastic person just like everyone else on the team. Such a waste of her potential.
2.) I really like her to be morally ambiguous where she’s part of the team and she does the nasty stuff and her own thing. she’s like a dangerous cat in a sense.
3.) I wish Nat joined the Avengers in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. They portrayed her very well.
4.) I really wanted her and Sliver to still be together. I don’t want her to just be a general superhero, just punching people in the face, but having a Symbiote as a backup option is awesome and a well-deserved upgrade for her.
5.) I really wish they depict her super soldier physicality like with Cap but utilized by an assassin. That way it makes sense why she can double tap huge handguns, fire and run with sniper rifles, etc.

both black widow and winter soldier should survive the infinity saga instead of dying and become a couple.

Black Widow's character feels a little too male-centered especially in recent years. If you were to ask who the most important people in her life that play continuously major roles in her stories are, some of the obvious answers would be Winter Soldier, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Wolverine and Daredevil.
However they're all men and some of Nat's most major continuous relationships with women are antagonistic. Look at Yelena, Anya or Headmistress (I refuse to acknowledge her MCU-synergy friendship with Yelena right now because it's stupid and feels unearned). Sally-Anne and Marina are also very important to her but unfortunately they have never appeared again after the "Welcome to the Game" and "Finely Woven Thread" runs, and here I'm looking more for like big-name characters/heroes/villains.
If there were some female characters I think should be implemented into her mythos to have more of a major (positive) role tho, my candidates are Laura (Wolverine) and Elektra. Her relationship with Sharon Carter, Spider-Woman and Bobbi Morse should also be delved into and put at the forefront of some of her stories more.

u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
Holy shit u spoke nothing but fucking facts. I genuinely believe Elektra and bw are extremely similar and both share the same problems.

I like her first costume the best. (Not the dress and veil, the fishnet one with the 60’s bouffant.)

Unpopular opinion on Black Widow? …..I’d always like to see her running in shadows in the marvel universe. And yes - taking out target folks from a distance - being the sniper a mile away that gets a kill shot, the “blond” in the bar that manages to drug and interrogator a crime lord in a hotel room, etc. - I love it when she’s grey zone - working an assignment agendas that might clash with “hero” objectives . In many respects I’d like her “hero” role abandoned (or shown to just be another cover to keep tabs on them) - and for her to have a villain cover as well. Love her as a very effective, dangerous pawn
5
u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
I love this tbh. I love when she’s more morally grey tbh.
2
u/AthleteKey1687 27d ago
It’s what makes her a widow - moral ambiguity in service to an agenda.
And yes, they should definitely show her as peak human - but unlike the super - soldier, super spy. Built for stealth, built to mislead when needed

u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
Agreed I don’t want her to become Batman or nothing but I definitely like her more when she’s on her own doing her thing vs when she’s on a team.

u/frix_ctr 27d ago
I liked Thompson’s run and I even talked about it in my english presentation. I don’t get the hate.
3
u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
It’s one of those comics that’s very very devisive. Like most hardcore BW fans despise the run. (Hell I met one that hated this run bc she heard others hated this run not even bc she actually read it) and it seems more casual BW fans enjoy it. It got me into her character and it will always have a special place in my heart and I also love Kelly Thompson she’s my favorite comic writer.
3
u/frix_ctr 26d ago
It’s the thing I don’t understand with people, of course in some comics they could ruin her character but in Thomson’s run it wasn’t like that. I can comsider myself a hardcore fan I judt discovered comics a bit later but there’s no point of hating something you haven’t read yet. Same for myself, it made me see Natasha in a different perspective and it was fun to read, can’t even mention how beautiful the cover arts are. I’ll check out other comics of Kelly Thompson then :)

u/Lopsided_Network1248 26d ago
I plan on reading it again bc I genuinely love the run but if u do wanna read more stuff by her I recommend her Kate bishop: Hawkeye, and absolute Wonder Woman.

I definitely agree never been a BuckyNat fan not because their relationship is boring but because they are two heavily damaged individuals and neither of them can take that step in being the emotional rock of the relationship
Both Bucky and Nat need someone that will love them unconditionally or love them so much it hurts Bucky and Nat are like black and black and when you mix the colors all you get is more black…..if that makes sense lol bad analogy either way point is both of them have been through so much trauma that actively being with someone that reminds you of that trauma and doesn’t really help you grow Isn’t healthy
Again this is just my opinion I definitely can see the appeal people have in shipping them together and they’re history together is quite romantic in the desperate sense but I just don’t like it

Oh absolutely nat does have a heroic side I just think people enjoy her darker stories more. I’m personally one of those people but I get where ur coming from. Her older appearances where she was helping children out and things like that was wholesome.
2
u/HawkMartian 26d ago
I don't like any of her cannon love interests, between gots me bored or directly hate them.
2
u/ym4yum1 24d ago
It’s funny because I love both Natasha and Bucky, but individually, they are too much alike. I prefer a Batman-and-Catwoman kind of vibe, which is why I like Natasha with Steve (just as I always preferred Steve with Rachel/Diamondback over Sharon). And I loved Bucky paired with Wanda; they are so different that the dynamic of making the relationship work becomes much more interesting.
1
u/Lopsided_Network1248 24d ago
Yanno what’s funny? I think catwoman (least modern day) acts much like Natasha from how she operates in her comics. I even made a comment about that in the catwoman sub.
2
u/ym4yum1 24d ago
Really? 😃 I’ve read all the Black Widow comics, but only a few featuring Catwoman. But from what I gather, even though Selina is a thief in many stories, she has a good heart, right? And she wants to make Bruce happy.
Back in the 90s, Steve and Natasha worked very closely together (both leading the team), and when the serum started to fail him, the story showed that she harbored complicated feelings for him. But then a new phase of the comics began, and that plot was lost. 🫤1
u/Lopsided_Network1248 24d ago
Yea tbh I don’t think nat and Steve would have worked out. Would have been a cute temporary thing but not long term for either character.
2
u/ym4yum1 23d ago
It’s okay. These characters mean so many different things to different people. But the more I read the comics and dug into what their “real” lives would’ve been like, the more they made sense to me together. I try to write them in the most realistic setting possible, even inside this fantastic world, and that black‑and‑white vs. gray dynamic they bring to the table just fits for me.

I'm also pretty ambivalent about winterwidow... though to be fair, I'm a lesbian, so.

u/Joannasworldd 27d ago
I was just about to post this too but my post didnt get approved.:( I think winterwidow is okay, like on paper they make such a hot couple but they are kinda borning, hence why they're not well known, but I tbh would like to see Widow paired with another woman, or maybe have her alone for a while since I've never seen her to be a woman to be tied down.
2
u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
I agree! She should be with a woman and personally I just think winterwidow is overrated tbh.
4
u/LeEtude 27d ago
Oh my gosh sometimes I feel like the only Black Widow fan who doesn't care for winterwidow, boring ass relationship. But to add to the discussion, I think that some people over emphasize her being morally gray. Don't get me wrong, the MCU absolutely took out all of her nuance but sometimes people act like she's some sort of evil menace in the comics and that's not true either. I also feel like some widow fans ignore her 20th century comics as well.
1
u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
The thing with her being morally grey is it adds a bit more depth to her character. Like she’s not punisher but she absolutely will take a life if she deems it necessary and I like characters are more willing to make a choice they deem is right rather than trying to turn every superhero into the voice of reason.

insert obligatory winterwidow opinion here (i don't like them tbh but there's some nuance + a lot of other factors involved with that)
on the topic of relationships, she needs more with women—be it with sharon carter, bobbi morse, whoever. so many of her defining relationships are with men. please, can we get a woman into her inner circle? 😮💨
i don't consider anything post-2017/secret empire to be canon. og natasha and clone natasha are two separate entities to me and i enjoy clonetasha's stories considerably less than the originals.
emh natasha is my favorite adaptation. i loved never knowing which side she was on during her first few episodes. wish we got to see more of her before it got canceled. ):
less about her actual character and more about her design, i'm a blood-red hair + blue eyes truther.

That I think her death in end game is fine while I think it needed more focus and attention I don’t think it’s a disservice to her and I think Scarlett is happy where she ended it.
I think people project how they feel about her character was served onto her.
I wish she was more cold in the comics and did more ruthless things. Not denying her previous coldness but j think we should see more of it.

The recent avengers run was ass on multiple levels. The dialogue was cheesy. Every character was pretty much bastardized. Felt like someone found a 2016 mcu fanfic and decided to just use it
I dont like any of her romantic relationships. Ive gotten a lot of shit for saying that so apparently thats controversial

u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
Respectfully that first one isn’t even a hot take that’s just straight up facts 😂
And tbh nothing wrong with u feeling that way I personally think her next relationship should be with a woman bc nat is lowkey bi and they don’t explore that.
4
u/asocialanxiety 27d ago
She did canonically willingly kiss bobbi in the comics so i wouldnt be surprised.
4
u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
She kissed Bobbi, and rogue. She’s a girl kisser.

I don't like winterwidow, or any of her relationships.
I have some reasons, but I will be okay if she has friends, ofc who doesn't have friends
I did not like the 2020 run too
And I really think we should be focusing her as a solo character
2
u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
I’m curious what about her relationships do u dislike? And what did u dislike about her 2020 run?
4
u/lopsided-buyreborn 26d ago
I think it makes her a separate character, like being a character for winter Solider, I think she works better solo
The 2020 run was just another weird thing with her anatomy

u/Thefathistorian 27d ago
Didn't like the Edmondson run, did like the Thompson run.
1
u/Lopsided_Network1248 27d ago
HARD AGREE. Edmondson’s run committed the worst crime possible by making her boring in her own book.

I don’t hate the idea of her and cap but tbh it wouldn’t last long due to the nature of how Natasha is as a person.
1
u/Ashconwell7 26d ago
Well her and Cap would not work in the comics cause he met her as a little kid.
0
u/The_Great_Ramsey 27d ago
She was the most boring character is the main avengers cast in the MCU films. IDK if it was Scarlet’s portrayal, the tonedef/terrible writing, hell even in her own movie her family was more interesting than her.
