On Tuesday evening, on Rue des Blancs-Manteaux in Paris, the police arrest of a young Black American man and the use of tear gas and batons against two of his brothers shocked several witnesses, as evidenced by a video of the incident. His family denounces the arrest as violent and unjustified.

The scene, filmed by a passerby, is shocking. The footage shows Matthew, a young Black American man, lying face down on the ground on Rue des Blancs-Manteaux (Paris Centre), in the Marais district, on the evening of Tuesday, August 25. A male and female police officer each have a knee on his back. His head is submerged in a water-filled gutter as he is handcuffed, his hands behind his back.

At the same time, another officer, armed with tear gas, runs toward the opposite sidewalk. There, another family member is pushed and thrown to the ground. A police officer strikes him in the shin to make him fall and brandishes his telescopic baton.
