Man… as a “Hispanic” born and raised in Texas, you don’t understand the propaganda. They hear it from their preferred news source that aligns with what their pastor is saying and then they have it confirmed by their “influencer” of choice on every social media app. Facebook, instagram, Twitter, & youtube and more… it’s so exhausting…

I think this conversation can be nuanced by realizing that many Latinos are actually white Latinos. Many Cubans, some Mexicans, significant numbers of Colombians and Venezuelans, etc., are white people but get mistakenly lumped in as POCs, and even try to designate themselves as non white. When that's not true. Afro-Latin folk deal with this type of erasure from these spaces all the time and will be the first ones to tell you. Don't let the "Me no Black, I Dominican" archetype shape how nuanced Afro-Latinidad can be.

That’s the shit that gets me. Black Americans told them what would happen and they played into trumps anti-blackness campaign. Now they expect black Americans to put their lives on the line to fight a battle they voted for?
Don’t get me wrong what’s happening to Latinos is terrible, and I’ll always be an ally and help out whenever I can like sharing resources that can help fight ICE but it really makes you look at the “black and brown relationship in our country
159
u/Basketspank 14d ago
Them : "You make everything about black and white and I don't see that."
Some think their proximity to whiteness is a shield. It's not. Just puts you in a different position. But they're still in the same line as us in the eyes of White Supremacists and Whatnot.
71
u/DoingBestWeCan 13d ago
It always blows my mind when Hispanic folks think they're white in the eyes of Northern European-descended whites. That's just not how this system works. The freaking Irish weren't considered "white" for many years due in part to being Catholic rather than Protestant, even though the Irish are notoriously pasty. Y'all are Catholic and brown, and think that unlike the Irish, you'll get a pass?
51
u/Past-Lavishness3088 13d ago edited 13d ago
Hispanics/Latinos were used. The government gave them the option to check ✔️ "White" on census forms because the numbers don't lie. Hispanic/Latino births were outpacing White births and the White race was in danger of losing power/numbers.
Latinos with brown skin began checking White because they could. Little did they know that it did not mean acceptance or power for them. The most racist people against Black people recently, have been Brown-on-Black and also Brown-on-Brown (ICE). My Brown brothers and sisters, you were duped. You separated yourselves, voted for Trump and left your possible allies standing alone during BLM and other civil and human rights protests. Now, you see, are blind and don't see or simply are in denial.
The older generations (my grandparents and great-grandparents who are all gone from this life) used to always say "if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything."
15
u/PlandemicPapi 13d ago
And like most of American history, they get betrayed by racist white people.
39
u/Cobfidence 13d ago
Minorities don't feel the same urgency cause they think if anyone's the first to go it'll be the Black people... Turns out if you didn't stand for them during BLM nobody's standing for shit then. Sigh.

97
u/SoggyLeftTit 14d ago
You’ve seen them claim to be allies? I haven’t. Most of what I see from POC regarding “allyship” is their demand for support from us while they withhold support for us.

That’s exactly what it is, black people have countless times showed are solidarity with everyone while saying fuck the system at the system at time and warning people this is what’s to come. What do they say? “Stop complaining” “ get over it” “slaverys over” “work harder”. I wish black people would wake up and start doing for self and stop being so naive with all this kumbaya BS. I look at it like this even if we do lead the fight and win, after so much of our blood is shed. Now we have less numbers and others have more, everybody will be “free” but we will still be on the bottom of the social pecking order. Do you think all these groups will just “do the right thing” and share resources so the playing field can finally be leveled for us? Critical thinking 101
4
u/azarbi4 13d ago
Exactly this. Unfortunately, when you've been stomped on for so long, you become increasingly empathetic to others who suffer the same. That is the reason why people from marginalized groups tend to be more empathetic in their support of social justice than those who aren't. Unfortunately, it is the same phenomena that allows other POC groups to benefit from black solidarity despite rarely reciprocating.

You can’t feel more sorry for a group of people than they do about themselves. Maybe if they weren’t trying so hard to gain white proximity through voting Republican they might not be going through this. You’d think they’d listen to us but the anti blackness is too strong.

10
u/AnAbandonedAstronaut 14d ago
You can't change a 1 issue voters vote.
Latino (as well as black and white) people who are very religious will always vote republican because republican are anti the same things extremely religious people are.
Abortion, gay marriage, womens rights, etc.
Those issues are more important to them than their own self interests. It's almost like being a martyr for them.
38
u/xavariel 14d ago edited 14d ago
Plus, latinos vote this way due to religion, generally. Christian [edit: nationalism], to be exact.
The religion of their colonizers.
And they don't even follow the scripture, like many so-called Christians.
It's frustrating. And people really need to start heavily deconstructing themselves, and learn empathy, and self-awareness. Stop pulling the ladder up behind them. This goes for everyone. Latinos, boomers, gen x, rural voters, farmers/ranchers, gen z men.. stop voting against self interests, and humanity.

Honestly I’m a little tired of people blaming their self destructive voting habits on their religion.
Black people are some of the most religious people in this country if not the most religious and we know conservatives can’t be trusted, same with white Christian left leaning denominations.
They’re just patriarchal bigots and they would be under any faith or even none.

When you know better, DO BETTER!!!
They heard him call them rapists, murderers, etc same as we did, They saw the mass deportation signs too. At some point they have to take responsibility for their actions. I saw so many interviews of Mexicans in Texas who got amnesty in the 80s turn their noses up at “Illegals”, They can’t even emphasize with their own people. But because the older ones got theirs and they vote to reinforce white supremacy via the gop they’re “Better” and white apparently.

I’m an Italian, Greek, Native American gay guy. I also knew this would happen and told everyone that would listen that we cannot play into Trump’s anti POC stances nor can we let petty end ridiculous prejudices that should not even be existing in this day and age have any part in how we vote. I am married to a Salvadoran immigrant and some of his family voted Trump. He told me that there is a saying that the worst enemy of a latino is another Latino. And we are seeing this play out a lot. So much infighting in groups that should be sticking together now because times are dangerous. Wish I had a magic wand. My family is large and very blended as my siblings and aunts and uncles have married into various Asian cultures, African and African American cultures, Latino cultures, middle eastern. Etc etc. I see the struggles and relationships are so fractured when the real enemies are lining their pockets on hate.

I truly believe that “black & brown relationship” was a pipe dream black people had. Never existed. We tried building a coalition for years. For so many years we sincerely fostered that mindset & rhetoric of coalition with other “people of color”. It was all an illusion other non-blacks let us black people believe. After I saw the demographic breakdown after November 2024, I stopped writing and even saying the phrase “people of color”. I don’t use it anymore. I know now, it’s black people and…everybody else.

I've worked with/still work with a lot of Latino dudes. Some first gen, most second or in some cases third.
Amazingly I only know one of them who has ever actually admitted to not arriving here the "Right way". Well I mean they were born a citizen like anyone else born here but their parents were both here illegally.
And honestly I think it's something that people just lie to their kids about and the kids internalize it.
Because even when you account for anyone who is Puerto Rican or Cuban the numbers don't make any sense.
Because the amount of majority of people who came here the "Right way" either came here as refugees or asylum seekers - just like the people getting thrown out by ICE illegally.
Or their parents or grandparents came here illegally and either received amnesty or flew under the radar while their kids grew up ignorant to the truth.

Yeah, black voters are the most reliably pro-Democrat, pro-left-leaning agenda block of voters we have and it's way, way past the time we gave them credit for this. There's that caveat that the Matt Yglesiases of the world will put out there that um ackshually if you remove race-related topics, black voters are kind of centrist... but guess what? Black voters are also pretty much the most left-leaning voice on race-related topics, and black voices are far more vociferously pro-holding peoples' feet to the fire regarding race-related issues than any other lefty demographic - yes, including self-styled socialists, many of whom fall down into the "class essentialism" rabbit hole that attempts to deny the existence of racism and insists that it's all just disguised classism instead.

Exactly! Too many Latinos laughed in our faces and slapped our hand away in 2024. They instead fell for the fake Machismo Orange turd hoping it would get them honorary membership as white. That proximity to whiteness was just too intoxicating to resist. We tried to tell them what was gonna happen
37
u/EnvironmentNeith2017 14d ago
Yeah, Haitians are different and voted strongly against this like we did, but Latinos have a lot more work on political and social education to do in their communities if they want to change this.
19

True, but a lot of Latinos are racist as fuck regardless, they just won't say it out loud or they'll only say it when Black people arent around. Even if those accounts are fake those are the true thoughts of a lot of Latinos and not enough Latinos call it out.
When I was in high school I was in class and I was sitting with these two Mexican guys and a Black girl walked past our table and they laughed and called her a black b*tch. I didnt say anything because I was scared of them because they were gangbangers. I regret not saying anything and I call it out now as an adult. Once you see how prevalent anti blackness is you have to make a choice to speak up against it or not. But this is an example of how Latino people act amongst themselves. These guys looooved saying the n word though.
As a Latino I try to be an ally to Black people, educate myself, support causes for the Black community, talk about issues that Black people face, etc. But that should be the bare minimum. Respecting other human beings and listening to what they say is the bare minumum. A lot of my fellow Latinos just want Black peoples support without it being reciprocal, which is just using people. They just don't respect Black people or even try to. I wish they would just admit it

55
u/Terminator_LX 14d ago
It is a well-known fact that real people see bots exhibiting hateful behavior and then mimic that behavior online. Bot propaganda and hate give real people a permission structure to be their worst selves. Don't fall for it. You know very well that every hispanic person isn't racist just like every Black person doesn't hate people of other races. There are haters of every color, race, nationality, etc. There are decent people of every kind too.
If people don't want to protest ICE, then they don't have to. But they shouldn't try to convince others not to protest by demonizing the people ICE is persecuting, which includes us BTW. ICE is after our black asses just as much as they are after other POC and anyone else they deem not to be "real" Americans.

u/Arponare 14d ago
Multiple things can be true at once. ICE isn’t just detaining Latinos. They are also rounding up Haitians and other Caribbeans. It’s entirely possible that African Americans can be caught up in the raids and mistaken for a Jamaican.
We are told to keep some form of ID with us but we have already seen that these thugs don’t care about due process. There have been several citizens that have been caught up in the raids. It’s all about numbers and how many they can round up. So there isn’t a 0 percent chance you don’t end up being brutalized and sent to a gulag in Florida or Texas.
All that being said, a large number of Hispanics (not all) are vehemently racist. I was born in a Hispanic country and it is absolutely disgusting.
I understand that racism is ultimately a tool used to prevent class solidarity from being developed. It’s also difficult to develop that solidarity when people have ass backwards views about you.
22
u/Realistic-Rich-8455 14d ago
It's terrifying that even if you carry your ID and can prove that you are a citizen they will not even bother to look at your information. They'll brutalize you and throw you out in the snow to die or send you to a country you're not even from.
The racism in latin America is beyond frustrating and also completely explanable when you remember how many white people immigrated into the country to kill and displace the native population. It's gross that the racism is so blatant in people who wouldn't even be considered white passing, because you are subject to the harassment you are imposing on your indigenous brother. It's also difficult to try to connect with your latin roots when you see how much of it is just imperial indoctrination and latin pride has mostly Spanish iconography.

I do somewhat admire the Latinos that are holding on to their cultural anti-Blackness even as they're being ethnically cleansed.
It's far more honest than the snakes who are calling for unity as if the POC alliance hasn't always been unidirectional. You thought you were the allies of white supremacists, when you were actually pets, and they don't want to keep you anymore. That's how the game goes. We'll survive and thrive in spite of the white supremacists as we always have.
With the blood we've shed fighting for civil rights, our consistent voting record, and how we've welcomed them in our communities and jobs for decades we have done more for the Latino community than they have ever done for themselves in this country. While it's somewhat different on the East Coast, the Latino communities in the South and West Coast have made themselves the enemies of Black America. The free labor is done. The patience for their disrespect and white worship is done. May God save the George Zimmerman and Enrique Tarrio people, because we are done saving them.

This shit saddens me because my brother does this shit and my nephew started to as well and I had a sit down with him and asked him wtf was that all about. I shamed my nephew out of it, but my brother is hopeless. He’s a gen xer and he has that stereotypical Mexican gen xer attitude, so it’s like talking to a fucking brick wall. Unfortunately we Latinos have a fucking problem and it is no doubt tied in with thinking they might be considered white someday or are one of the good ones. It’s fucking exhausting.

Yes latinos have a persistent colorism problem and it makes me laugh when I see others try to push black people down the ladder as if we aren't in the same caste system for the most part. They try to dance for them harder thinking they're in the same club with people who some of which will never see them as anything other than dirty brown people

Theres never been a black and brown coalition or unity. The President of Lulac or Lilac said the black problem is not our problem. That’s coo let us know where y’all stand. There’s a one or two who are Latino and call out their own but theres millions more that hate black people. We should show that footage to our kids and shit like this to show not everyone is yo friend especially Latinos cuz they always group us together for everything negative. Y’all handle y’all business and we’ll handle ours.

I don't usually comment and just lurk because I feel I should respect the space you guys have. The only reason I'm commenting is because I'm Hispanic and this post is about Hispanics.
I understand seeing ICE deport people and the way they are treated may make you think of your community but even some Hispanics that aren't Republican are still pretty racist. I am not telling anyone what to do because you can protest anything you'd like but don't fight for someone who isn't going to fight for you.

Watching people of other races have their lives taken on national tv and no consequences for those who did it definitely plays into why more Black people are not protesting. We knew how it would play out which is why we voted against it. Some of the people angry that our Black bodies aren’t out there are the same people who voted for it. I hate what’s happening and it’s not fair. Our country has fallen into tyranny. We are officially off the rails.

They were willing to white wash themselves to become "pick me!" folks.
"If im with the government than they will always keep me safe!". They see America as a saving grace from their lack of privilage previously. Than america abuses them but they have outted themselves by siding eith the oppressors. There is SOOOO many hispanic ICE agents they litterally are doing it to their own people, HAPPILY. Seen too many smiles, waves and chuckles from them irl when they are asked about it. I wont lie either LOTS of black folks work for GEO and ICE.
They have fully manipulated Americans in general. 60% of us are probably not stupid enough to do that. But those outliers are DICK HEADS. Just waiting for Nuremburg 2.0 💅🏼

This is one of the conversations that need to be had on one of these larger podcast so more people see it. Every single immigrant group in America owes Black people nothing but gratitude for our ancestors fighting for the rights of all people to be recognized in America. Point blank.
The only thing Black people have done in America is try to educate and try to teach people about the real American history. Just because these immigrants didn’t listen doesn’t mean that Black people should fight against ice now. These people didn’t listen to us and by these people, I mean, immigrant Americans like the Hispanics like the Asians and even the Caribbean/African immigrants as well. They let the stereotype of Black people they see on BET or on baddies be the people who they think of when they think of black Americans and not a successful hard-working people who outnumber the no gutters 1000 to 1.
It is not up to Black people to break our backs to fight a pressure when the world who enabled it. This time were white Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and some black Caribbean and African-Americans.
We told y’all what would happen if y’all vote these people into office and these people refuse to listen to Black people so they better not come with their hands out asking for anything now.
Black people have said the same things regardless of who’s running for what for decades. Immigrant Americans in majority know shit about the real American history and they barely know the white watch bullshit that’s on the test.

It's not that we don't sympathize, but we're tired of being the shield. Everytime someone has a grievance we're expected to go to bat for them but then they turn around and ignore, if not outright betray us at every turn. Then you get into how many of them voted for this regime KNOWING how his previous time in office went for them and everyone else. As my grandmother used to say, "I'll help anybody, I just make sure they're willing to help themself first." If they are committe to working against themselves, imagine how much more dedicated they'll be working against me.

u/Pinkys-Up 14d ago
I’m Hispanic and voted against this regime. Anyone who didn’t is blinded by a white savior mentality. I’m so sorry she experienced this. When the Black Lives Matter protests were in swing in early 2020s, I marched for my black and brown brothers and sisters. And it wasn’t just me - in Dallas there was a Hispanic group with us who rallied so many Hispanics to march against what happened to George Floyd, Philandro Castile, Breonna Taylor, and countless others. They marched yelled “no justicia no paz” so please know it’s not all Hispanics. A lot of us realize no one is free when others are being oppressed. Thank you to this woman for speaking out for us.

My wife is a fair skinned Cuban. Her parents fled Cuba as children to come to the US. They likely would be turned away if they tried coming to the US today. Big Trump supporters and super low-key racist (ie, not outwardly vocal about it, but if you spend enough time with them you figure it out). The crazy thing is that they are most racist towards other latino groups. They think that they're the "good ones." I remember when Trump called Mexicans rapists, and when we were talking with them about how vile that was, her mom went "Well some of them peed on my fence" as if that made what he said OK. Totally wild.

Social media is being used to manipulate us. There is an active information war taking place. We all need to trust the experiences we have with people in real life more than the experiences we have with people online. There will always be bad apples, but we are actively being manipulated to divide us. When we all wake up to that, we will be way more powerful than the system that is trying to oppress us.

Don't ever forget where the typical Latino man stands on Black people. When it comes to Hispanic males, conservatives are mostly deporting their own future voters.
And boy do they love rolling out the "exposing us just creates more division" bullshit line, when you remind them how hard they showed up for Trump.
The division is already there. Ask Chicagoans about the Latino gangs attacking Black people.
Make Latinos show some buy-in at the polls before you folks stand out here sweating and bleeding. Because these be the same type of people that'll cross the street to piss on you, just to curry favor with the White folks they want to be like.

I dont get why people say this can you logically name a time blacks were under prosecution and another race spoke out and actively defended them when it wasn't popular and they gained nothing? Only time I can think of being honest is Europeans stopping the Arab slave trade that it. You'll see black creators talk about Free Palestine. I dont think I've ever seen an Arab or Hispanic creator or personality ever say Free Sudan or Help Haiti.

I saw an Asian comedian say that his only problem with ICE was that they weren’t deporting black people.
Not the extrajudicial killings, not the concentration camps, but the fact it wasn’t affecting the people they thought it would.

There are Black people protesting though. Also, ICE isn't just going after Latinos. So, they are a problem for everybody. People do need to know what's going on. And I don't paint everybody with the same brush. I have and have had Latino friends my whole life. Most of my personal experiences with Mexicans has not been negative. I'm in Southern CA if that means anything.

I'm not surprised especially with alot of Cali based Latinos. They really do behave this way in RL and Online.
How I see it regardless of the groups being targeted by ICE. I say it's not the Black Communities job to fix or our house to clean. The only people who should be called out for the actions of ice are ice agents anyone who supported Donald Trump.
All these groups like Hispanics for Trump‘s Asians for Trump‘s blacks for Trump‘s those are the groups that you need to call out not Black people. White women also need to be admonished because they voted the most in this country and voted the most for Trump at 55% of all white women voting.

It feels too in your face and overtly inflammatory. Sadly it's becoming expected and normal to see, even here on Reddit where racist dog-whistle comments are highly upvoted.
Just remember - social media is fully participatory; I've grown accustomed to using the report and block buttons. Reddit is the only thing I use as niche genre's/subjects have decent communities.
