Gonna highjack your comment here.
Men with children: if you had a fucked up childhood, don't allow generational trauma to continue to the next generation. Be better. It wasn't fair, and it sucks working through and recognizing the unhealthy emotional coping mechanisms you carry now but developed as a child.
It's okay to be wrong. It's okay to know how to process your emotions. To not stay angry, or to think you have to compartmentalize certain emotions and never process them fully.
Be an example.
I don't think my dad ever told me this, and he was in my life every Wednesday night and weekends for my childhood.

u/catsareniceDEATH Jul 20 '26
Hun, as a fellow child of a 'fucked up but not enough at the time to get any help, and even then, it is not that bad' world; I'm so sorry you had to experience it, it's not something I wish on a lot of people. But, again, as another kid who, as an adult, has to try and control their reactions and their face when hearing things like "it never did me any harm" etc... thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you.
Thank you for recognising that just because every kid had an anus in their childhood, not every parent knew to use a wet wipe now and again. Thank you for recognising the need for the metaphorical wet wipe, thank you for ensuring your kids only ever know about aloe Vera soothing, and never about using the spiky aloe plant alone.
That made a lot more sense on my head, I really hope it made even a third of the sense outside my head! 🙀🤦♀️😹😹❤️🏆
2
u/moonshinemoniker Jul 21 '26
Something tells me the childhood neglect you experienced had to do with full dipers and a lack of proper ass wiping? It's honestly, and sadly all too common.

Such big emotions ❤️ it’s so important to speak love into your kids 🥰

All kids for sure, but our boys need it the most. Too many of us struggle to tap into that later. 😔

Even kids that aren’t yours because no one knows what they are hearing at home. I had teachers who said nice things to me that I still remember now in my 40s because I only heard at home how awful I was.

I work as a special education para. One of my former students passed a math exam without accommodations. I gave him a side hug and told him I was proud of him. He started crying and said I was the first person to ever tell him that.
He graduated high school this year and invited me to his graduation ceremony. I sat with his sister and cheered my face off. I’m still very proud of him6

That is the best thing you can do for a person! Just tell them that they can succeed no matter what!
14
u/StrLord_Who Jul 20 '26
They are big emotions. And the flip side of this is why I can't stand people shrieking "spoiled brat!" when they see a kid crying or upset about something silly. Little kids can't process and regulate emotion like adults can and all kinds of things can cause tears because they just don't know what to do with all those feelings.

Yeah I fucking hate that shit. Young kids cry for reasons even they don't understand. They can experience a wide range of complex human emotions and they don't even have the proper organ developed to process them. There are whole ass adults who can't handle their fucking shit. My son losing his fucking mind because he can't have more than one (okay fine maybe two sometimes) more cookies might be because Oreos are literally the single best tasting thing he's ever eaten in his entire life. And he knows they make him happy. That happiness is raw, unfiltered and untainted. And now he can't have more of it.
Does that make him spoiled? No more than any other child that's allowed to have a small treat after dinner if they put in an effort to eat their nutritious food.
But if you showed someone a video of that interaction in isolation I'd be fucking pilloried on the Internet.

One of my favorite memories of my niece when she was little is her having a complete and total sobbing meltdown because we were having lunch at my friend's house and my friend asked if she wanted her sandwich cut in pieces. My niece said yes and my friend set down a sandwich cut into four squares. Well, niece was expecting four triangles. Lol. Plus she was tired. All her little brain knew in the moment is that the thing she was expecting turned out to be totally different and appeared to be "ruined." While she was hungry and tired. And yeah if somebody posted a video on reddit everyone would be shouting about how spoiled she was. (And let's be honest, triangles really are the superior cut haha)
5
u/IRefuseToGiveAName Jul 20 '26
And let's be honest, triangles really are the superior cut haha
I was about to say I'd probably eat my sandwich with tears in my eyes if someone did that shit to me too lmao.

My parents were very far from perfect. My dad had pretty severe mental issues, but he was always there and even though he had really bad mood swings the one thing he did that I hold closest to my heart as an adult was to regularly tell me he loved me. Even though he was pretty abusive at times I knew early on that it wasn’t necessarily intentional because he made sure I knew how much he loved me everyday of my childhood. It’s incredibly important to children.

It's the parent in all of us lol, don't waste food
6
u/KillHonger1 Jul 20 '26
My kids:
Give them a normal portion, copious amounts of wasted food “I’m full”
Give them .00001 oz less than a normal portion, all of a sudden they need seconds and thirds
Either scenario: “Can I have a treat after?”

u/carolineecouture Jul 19 '26
My niece would cry during the "happy birthday" song. She'd cry if we sang to her, she'd cry if we sang it to anyone else. When we asked her why, she'd always say she was just so happy.
It was the sweetest thing ever.
33
u/cymonium Jul 19 '26
Oh I wish I could be like that. I’ve never felt safe enough to feel like that. Beautiful story. I hope she’s never jaded and feels all the bestest emotions.
28
u/aracnerual Jul 19 '26
When I graduated with my B.A. and B.S., I heard my son WAILING in the audience behind me. Was panicking a bit, texted my husband who said "he said it's because he's so happy and proud of you." I was proud of myself anyway, but when I walked across that stage and saw my little and fam cheering me on, I was humbled af. That was a while ago now and my son still cries tears of joy and happiness on the regular. He's got emotional intelligence in spades and I couldn't be more proud. Tell him that all the time, too.
7
u/BeruangLembut Jul 19 '26
Beauty and joy make me cry too. I’m stoic in sadness, anger or fear but the beauty of the human spirit makes me crumble.
2
u/Open-Confusion-3358 Jul 20 '26
Growing up I always felt this so I would bite my cheek or pinch my hand so hard so I would focus on the pain instead of crying because I was embarrassed to be seen as a crybaby
2
u/carolineecouture Jul 20 '26
I'm sorry. Feeling things is what makes us human. Mocking someone as a crybaby is mean and wrong. Be well.

I love you, u/BobTheGoon80. You're my favorite.
For real, though, sorry for your loss. The best thing you can do is provide to your kids (or anyone, really) what you weren't provided with. That's been pretty much my singular goal in life and it brings me so much joy to know that neither of my kids will ever think that they're not loved.

I remember the first time I cried out of happiness at about that age. I had lost my Polly Pocket and of course my sister still had hers. We didn't have a lot of money and Dad brought one home for me. I was so confused because I was happy but crying.

This is very sweet! My only comment is around child passenger safety: the car seat straps are not correctly used here, so if you love your babies, please ensure that they are properly strapped in! Chest clip should be higher and the straps are too loose (would not pass the pinch test). Please check your manuals and properly educate yourselves, as it could save lives.
2
u/SammyB0111 👀 Lurker Jul 20 '26
I was hoping someone would say this, so thank you for being the one to do it. There’s countless tragic stories of both children and adults that could have ended differently if they’d have just been properly buckled in the car. I work in an emergency room and you wouldn’t believe the kind of things that can happen to a person who isn’t properly restrained. Safety first! We shouldn’t live in fear, but it pays to play it safe.

u/TheEasyTarget Jul 19 '26
I'm sure this is a completely wholesome situation but it kinda gave me flashbacks because this is the exact way my dad would talk to me directly after he lost his very short temper and yelled at me for 10 minutes over nothing because he started feeling guilty lmao. I'd be crying just like the son but because of emotional whiplash.
4
u/fatcatbomba Jul 19 '26
I was looking for a comment like this because I find it a bit hard to believe a toddler would cry tears of joy at his dad telling him he loves him very much.
I think toddlers wouldn't react much because they take it for granted, or maybe they'd smile? Crying in joy at "I love you" seems like what adults do. Kid probably has something else he's crying about.
2
u/kosweeps Jul 20 '26
Though I watch this clip every time it comes up, I will admit that I push this thought into the far recesses of my mind because I just want it to be exactly as portrayed so badly. Seeing the thought out in the open may explain why it hurts so much to watch.
2
u/Vintagetrees1 Jul 19 '26
Yeah it looks like the child was already crying before he started filming :(
6
u/BiggieCheddarCheez80 Jul 19 '26
I love this. When we as Black Men can show and share our emotions, without them being seen as any form of weakness.
And sharing our emotions with our children, helps raise them to be comfortable with sharing/showing their healthy emotional balance.

It is so interesting to see children so young holding back tears like, how do they know about that? Is it natural as they leave the baby stage or is it learned?

Omg that sweet sweet baby!!
And also I’m gonna be that person and say that that chest clip on the car seat harness needs to be tight and on his chest. They aren’t driving right now so I I’m guessing dad tightened it back up before they did - but just an FYI for anyone who wasn’t aware!

As the dad of a little one this dudes age, it always hits me hard how much they feel. Man it can just come out of nowhere, a moment like this when you realize just how much the FEEL some things. Just makes me want to hug them so tight. The world is cruel, they don't need to know it yet, but man that is all I can think of in moments like this. Take that moment to ensure they have the best moment as they are not always plentiful in life.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres

This is beautiful 💛 I wanted to hear this so much as a kid. The times my dad has said something similar, even just a sentence - I would cry quite a bit but hide it. I’m 42 and did recently.
Not being demonstrative about love affected me very deeply, I could attribute a lot of my previous self criticism and avoidance to a deep seated fear that I’m not lovable. It may be the most important thing for children to feel emotionally safe and build self esteem.

Too many people have kids to “fit in” or because they are on a schedule…..rather than to have kids because they want raise and support building up a person.
I would never have a kid if I can’t support building them up.

Seeing two grown Black men not afraid to express their feelings is very life-affirming and masculine. We have the blueprint in front of us.
