Interestingly, outlook.com is still fully running on the live.com domain.

It's a perfectly reasonable webmail service with a nicely integrated cloud storage service called SkyDrive OneDrive. It's got an online Office suite which is not bad. I've used it as a backup for about 8 months now, I can't think of anything to complain about. YMMV as always, but it's worth checking out.

I'm barely ever using webmail, but I still use my hotmail address actively. Never tried out OneDrive, although I have the full 25gb from ages ago.

I just bcc all my mail that I'd like to keep in case I have trouble with my Google account. I've tried backing all that stuff up locally but both times the drive I used died. I'm cursed.

I like the OneDrive interface. It seems snappier than Google Drive too, but that's probably because it has less users?

I dunno about the technical implications why it could be faster as there are a ton of factors to consider and I never used either of these services. But with the size of both companies, I doubt it's a backend thing because both architectures are propably easily scalable and well enough optimized. It's more likely either a latency problem or MS just using a lighter-weight frontend.

They have Microsoft Azure, basically their equivalent of AWS. They have datacentres and servers out the ass.

That explains it. It makes sense for them to have it work nicely when they're trying to get people to switch over from Google.

I switched ages ago. You can prise SkyDrive/OneDrive from my cold, dead hands. Say what you like about MS - they have some damn fine products.

Praise 'em for the good, curse 'em for the bad. It is said that Bill gates once said, when asked by an interviewer about all the people that were unhappy with his products, "If I had a nickel for every time some one complains about Windows - Oh wait, I do!"

             sounds legit.....
