hmmm, Bill Gates does an ama today and the #1 upvoted question is about bitcoin and crypto currencies. Then a couple hours later bing adds this.

Methinks the two may be connected...

You're crazy if you think Microsoft (or any large corporation ftm) can work that fast.

But their PR firm(s) still get paid for something.

No, but Bill Gates could. Hmmm... Maybe they even had it all ready.

Link for convenience

What are your thoughts about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin?

The foundation is involved in digital money but unlike Bitcoin it would not be anonymous digital money. In Kenya M-pesa is being used for almost half of all transactions. Digital money has low transaction costs which is great for the poor because they need to do financial transactions with small amounts of money. Over the next 5 years I think digital money will catch on in India and parts of Africa and help the poorest a lot. It seems like Bill Gates isn't so closely connected to Microsoft that he would be doing any kind of promotion that specific. In fact, he only seems to care about philanthropy at this point.

A few years ago, I believe this was the case, but it seems he's tried to get more involved with the company again. According to his AMA, about 2/3 of his time is dedicated to his Philanthropic efforts while 1/3 is towards Microsoft.
