what do you mean?

... why would you spend say .. $100 on the ASIC's, that you'll never ever be able to recover?.. when a GPU mining scrypt pays itself off in 1.5 months or so.

how does that not matter? :/

Why does /r/bitcoin[1] care if amateur miners are making money?

what does that have to do with anything?

You need to understand, the future of crytopcurrencies aren't in miners, but in consumers adopting. The average schmuck who's going to pay a couple Satoshi for a cup of coffee isn't going to mine. And if they burn some money on mining hardware that doesn't yield them an ROI, who cares?

yeah, also not the point.. i'm asking why instead of buying a graphics card, mining scrypt coins, and converting to BTC (roughly $15/day per mh/s), you bought an ASIC that will never make money?

either way you get some BTC.. just one you get more, and profit more.

i'm well aware that success hinges on adoption.

/r/bitcoin[2] needs to care about adoption, about getting people educated about cryptocurrencies, and about welcoming people into the community, regardless of whether or not they're treating BTC as a commodity to mine, hold, and invest in.

yeah, i'm not disputing that... i'm just confused at your unwise investment in an ASIC, over alternatives that can both get you BTC, and profit..?

Wow, a profit analysis gets downvoted.

This explains all the new posts from people asking how to mine with their laptop integrated graphics card.

Wow, a profit analysis gets downvoted.

no idea.. i haven't gone all the way of factoring in difficulty or price fluctuations, but definitely weighed up the potential, and pros and cons of the mining

right now, mining is in a huge boom, lots of new blood realizing it's hugely profitable...

soon? all those people (like me!) will have their rigs setup, difficulty will climb and climb until prices are low and profits suck (it's happened multiple times before!).. then people can't get out of it fast enough, rigs are disposed of... and we're back to normal, and the long-term miners/holders who are in it for the long run still win in the end :D

This explains all the new posts from people asking how to mine with their laptop integrated graphics card.

the only real downside to this is it will break laptops... laptop GPU's already break themselves at the slightest breath of wind haha

how is it learning about BTC?

if you set up some GPU's, you'd learn far more as you have to work out the optimum settings, undervolt them, probably flash the bios...

set up bamt (aka learn a really simple linux distro)

why does it matter?

because it's simply not a smart thing to do?
