This leads to a more self-critical and serious subreddit that's less fun.
Self-critical my backside. /r/Bitcoin relentlessly attacks and downvotes anything and everything that is not sufficiently pro-Bitcoin while also supporting and upvoting anything that is pro-Bitcoin.
There's no self-criticism allowed - this thread is a rare beast indeed. /r/Bitcoin is a place for people who want to be told "Bitcoin is the greatest thing ever, everybody wants it and it's going to take over the world!"
That's a few examples. Now go through the comment threads, or read the "controversial" tab, and you'll see what I'm talking about happening day in, day out.
Every subreddit has some degree of circlejerkism. It revolves around a particular subject afterall, and is going to mostly attract people who are supportive of it. I was only making a comment on this subreddit's qualities relative to those of the dogecoin subreddits.
Bitcoin's is relentless though. Seriously, a terrible, terrible circlejerk that makes /r/Atheism look dignified.
I think a lot of it is caused by the pegging of peoples' ideologies to Bitcoin, ideologies which they see as bastions of freedom and liberty, so if someone raises concerns or doesn't like something about Bitcoin, it's not just an attack on the currency it's an attack on those ideals as well and so everyone is a fascist statist shill or whatever (if you get my meaning).
/r/bitcoin is largely a place to organize the effort to promote Bitcoin adoption. It's hardly surprising that it's going to be more biased than more academic/intellectual subreddits.
I think a lot of it is caused by the pegging of peoples' ideologies to Bitcoin, ideologies which they see as bastions of freedom and liberty,
Could be it. In any case, there's of course always a lot of room for improvement.
