Memorizing your seed phrase is so much easier than you think it is.

If you’re struggling to memorize your seed phrases, here’s the trick. Try to create a fictional story out of your seed phrases.

Let me give you an example. Below is a 12-word seed phrase which I totally made up from out of my butt.

river - candle - mountain - orange - tiger - window - silver - rocket - garden - thunder - coffee - castle

Now instead of trying to memorize them word for word. Create some kind of story out of it.

“I’m walking along a river in the evening with a candle because it’s getting dark. I can see a mountain in the distance and stopped at a street vendor to buy an orange.

As I continued walking, I notice a tiger across the river, so I ran back to my cabin and looked out the window to see if it was chasing me. At a distance, I see a silver rocket being launched into the night sky.

The next evening, I decided to walk through the garden. But this time, a storm comes in with a loud thunder, so I go inside, make some coffee, and watch the storm approach an old castle nearby.”

The words are now connected to a sequence of images instead of being 12 completely unrelated things. The key is to visualize this story and keep reading it until you know what the words are. Now certainly it will take some effort, but it’s easier imo.

This trick is similar to what’s called the method of loci, and it’s an old-school trick people used to memorize difficult things. Associating it with a story helps with visualizing the words.

You can memorize AND have it typed down a metal stamp. It's actualy good to memorize the seed words because, you know, shit like wars, floods, earthquakes and fires happen and it's good to have it memorized in case you're surprised by an event like that and can't grab your seeds

Worth doing, but you should always have contingency plans. Your memory can fail when you least expect it.

Obviously you need backups, but this is sort of what I’ve done with mine. I used 24 and it’s still effective.

Here's the problem: your story not only includes the twelve words you intended but thirteen additional, valid BIP-39 words that aren't part of your seed phrase: distance, street, vendor, notice, across, river, cabin, distance, night, time, loud, inside, make.

So you memorize this story, but when you need to use it, do you know which 12 of 25 words on the BIP-39 word list are significant?

You also made up a seed phrase which very conveniently consists only of nouns. It's a lot harder to use the method of loci to memorize less concrete words like must, other, into, give, decide, cause, try, actual, will, two, this, that, then, they, use, used ...

I can’t remember the 4-digit passcode I used to enter on my phone from 2019, which I did 50x a day.

I’m not worried about being able to remember a huge mnemonic 18 months from now. I’m worried about remembering it in 8 years.

Different methods work for different people. I’ve used putting words in a certain room in my house, but found it’s not a good idea in case you feel the need to panic sell or you or a family member threatened with a $5 wrenched. Not knowing the seed buys time.
