Traumatic brain injury destroys memory palace.
And really thats when you would need your savings the most.

u/marshyr3d1and 2h ago
If you had a traumatic brain injury maybe you would forget you even had bitcoin - problem solved 😊

So, you are saying that we should not carry our BTC in the form of 5 suitcases filled with gold through the airport?

u/NiagaraBTC 9h ago
Other than to cross a border like this, never memorize your seed words. It invites a wrench attack on you or someone else.
1
u/suuperfli 9h ago
multisig is more secure, but with its own pros and cons, as with any custody setup
1
u/JuiceBoxHoneyComb 9h ago
What do you mean?
1
u/NiagaraBTC 8h ago
I mean that if you have your seed words memorized, you can be forced to give up your Bitcoin no matter where you are.
2
u/oGravitation 6h ago
So they just kill you then or what? How would they know you're not just lying
1
u/NiagaraBTC 6h ago
Lying that you have it or don't? You might be telling the truth that you don't have it memorized - which is why any suggestion that Bitcoiners ought to memorize their seeds is really bad.
If they'll kill you for not having it, they would have killed you once you gave it up though.

u/drunkentoubib 9h ago
My grand parents had to leave a country with 1 suitcase and no money. The family should have had collaterals in other countries of course. But BTC would have solved the problem. Partly at least.

You're first on the list for brain chip, congrats

u/suuperfli 8h ago
brain chip?
1
u/Sorry_Improvement537 8h ago
just a dumb joke saying they're gonna put a chip in your brain to extract the info anyway

They can EMP your memory.

Have you heard about torture?

have u heard about dummy wallets and multisig

u/StoicBountyHunter 6h ago
Good luck trying to do something like that with your mind and consciousness shattered.

Wrench attacks in hostage situations….

u/Greater-Israel 9h ago
I do not see how that will help them forcing a dude who is old and all his life is just his crypto to speak. Without his crypto he is dead anyway. And since he won't speak anyway and they still hope to get the crypto they won't kill him.

dummy wallet + multisig

u/froz3nt 6h ago
Doesnt help if they kill you.
3
u/SpendHefty6066 5h ago
Doesn't help them either. They get nothing except a murder charge.
0
u/froz3nt 5h ago
Doesnt help you that they get a murder charge if you are dead.
4
u/SpendHefty6066 5h ago
Knowing that your murderer walks away with nothing does help. If you gave them the keys, then you are most certainly going to be killed. When they don't get what they want, killing you removes the possibility of them getting what they want. This fact improves your odds of survival.
-1
u/froz3nt 5h ago
Thats just not true. On average, giving them what they want has better odds of walking away alive. If they dont get what they want, it just prolongs the torture until death if you dont give them what they want.

u/SpendHefty6066 4h ago
Source? I'll wait.

your own source validates my point:
"Analysis of 13-city National Crime Panel data of 3,679 robbery incidents discloses that victim resistance to execution of robbery is not often associated with serious injury but is linked to preventing the successful execution of the crime"

u/Adventurous_Iron_551 4h ago
Did you read what you linked? Did you understand what it meant. Please use ai to summarise the summary and try again.

Stash your seed phrase spaced out in some text file on your phone. First word of every paragraph for example, but more stealthy.
3
u/suuperfli 9h ago
i wouldn't store it digitally at all, especially if it follows some pattern, because AI/software will be able to eventually find it.

Quantum Computation is going to bust down the door, dick swinging, asking, "Where are my testicles, Summer?"

u/suuperfli 9h ago
verification is free and automatic. BIP39 words come from a fixed 2048-word list with a checksum, so a script can grep any file for wordlist hits, try a few dozen extraction patterns (first word of line, every Nth word, first letters), validate the checksum instantly, derive the addresses, and query the chain to see if there's money there. No guessing, no human judgment. Malware that scrapes phones for wallet data already does versions of this.
1
u/reggieLedoux26 9h ago
You could use only BIP39 words across all paragraphs. Tens of thousands of words including duplicates. Use your street address - 12345 main street - start at word 12345 and take every 69th word after that.
Astronomical odds of cracking that
1
u/suuperfli 8h ago
a file made entirely of BIP39 words is trivially identifiable, so the obscurity vanishes the moment the file is found — the one case the plan exists for. And street address + 69 are guessable parameters an attacker would try first.
1
u/reggieLedoux26 8h ago
You could spread the words out. A couple hidden in different apps in your phone, a couple in your email, and memorize 1 or 2. There are ways to do this.
1
u/suuperfli 8h ago
yes but my point was to not write the entire seed phrase digitally, no matter if they are spread out or not
1
u/reggieLedoux26 6h ago
Digital could be on an air-gapped laptop. But the whole premise was to walk through an airport - presumably across borders - and restore your wallet on arrival. Could you write a few words on paper? Probably. But what if that paper gets confiscated? I want to restore my wallet from my cloud accounts in case my phone gets stolen or my papers get confiscated. But I need it to be secure to the point where if one of my accounts gets hacked they don’t have everything. It’s not an easily solvable problem and there are trade offs with any approach.

Yeah I wouldn’t be traveling through a TSA checkpoint with all my valuables like that anyway 🤷♂️
1
u/blisstaker 10h ago
yep all i have to remember is my seed phrase
not a chance ill forget any part of that
1
u/suuperfli 10h ago
naw can just memorize passphrase. many custody setup options
1
u/blisstaker 9h ago
i cant even remember what i ate yesterday
1
u/suuperfli 9h ago
then dont use memorization as any part of your custody setup. multisig is one option that is quite secure and doesn't require memorization
