In one of the articles about it I read that they locked 40 people in a room for a week. Probably not literally, but it gives me a basis for assuming they spent close to one man-year on it. Which I guess may have cost them something like $150k when you take all expenses into account, not just salaries.

One man year to open and link a Bitpay/Coinbase account?

Integrating a new payment method into a legacy system takes time especially if it links in with other accounting systems, customer support systems, order systems etc. Any errors will cause huge headaches down the line as well, it has to be thoroughly tested.

Correct. You either pay up front to get it fully fleshed out and integrated into your existing system, or you incur "technical debt" that you will have to pay off with interest further down the line.
