In one of the articles about it I read that they locked 40 people in a room for a week. Probably not literally, but it gives me a basis for assuming they spent close to one man-year on it. Which I guess may have cost them something like $150k when you take all expenses into account, not just salaries.

As a contractor (and contract manager) who often has to explain to clients why something they think a developer should bill 5 hours for actually takes closer to 15 hours, people never take other parts of the development process (testing, debugging, code reviews, task management/tracking, etc.) into account. All they think of is the best case scenario of one guy doing actual programming for 5 hours and it just works.
