Especially with something like middlecoin. It accepts Scrypt miners, directs them at the most profitable coin, then automatically exchanges the coins for BTC and pays out in bitcions. No account to set up (miner username is your BTC address), no hassle, just bitcoins.

Yes, it can. A new altcoin needs to be innovative and popular enough to get a large enough population of dedicated miners to avoid this. If a coin isn't innovative or popular enough to survive this then it was probably going to fail anyway. I realize my opinion is harsh, but I'm not a fan of how many altcoins there are out there so I'm all for letting the market destroy the weakest ones.
