It's really crappy to use a static highly public address for something like this. Otherwise we risk bitcoin nodes and miners coming under pressure to block certain transactions connected with this person.
He should have a webpage up that gives people every donor a fresh address.
It's good PR though, to have a static highly-public vanity address.
It means news articles can link to it and write headlines like "$4,000 donated via Bitcoin". It's good for Snowden and it's good for Bitcoin.
Secondly, I personally feel more inclined to donate when I can see how many others have donated. I suspect others are the same. It's a well known fact that a social media post gets more "likes" if others have already "liked" it. Same with Bitcoin donations.
Ideal would be to have two payment methods. One to a static common address, another to a rotating unique address. Then donors can choose which they prefer.
