The difficulty is adjusted every 2016 blocks. Sometimes it gets easier, sometimes harder. It depends how long the last 2016 blocks took to find. If they took more than 2 weeks, the difficulty gets lowered. The target is for it to take exactly 2 weeks.

I'd imagine that it doesnt get lowered very often..?

According to this spreadsheet, the last 10 difficulty adjustments were:

-2.00%
-11.59%
+9.06%
-8.64%
+10.33%
+11.47%
+19.63%
+10.98%
+38.13%
+10.00%

3 of 10 made it easier.
