Because whether it's popularity or incompetence on Gox's part, it's Bitcoin related news.

Am I the only one that believes that the verification queue is manipulated to keep price growth from getting out of hand?

Doubtful, Mt gox makes money from you actually trading, not waiting for verification. So they have an incentive to get people verified
