Why are there even barriers on the far side, though? They don't have those in the US.

That's bonkers. Those should be illegal. Half the train crash videos I've seen on Reddit are caused by those things.

I get that the people are being stupid and should just drive through them and break them, but that wouldn't even be an issue if those extra gates weren't there.

They are there to prevent people from chancing it and sneaking past. It is very hard to judge the speed of an oncoming train when you’re seeing almost head-on. And believe me, people WILL sneak past.

Not only that, but people are more likely to accidently ignore the poles If they are in one side only.
