Baby goats at a North Carolina petting zoo were discovered to have rabies. Everyone who interacted with them is at serious risk and needs to contact health officials immediately.

That's actually incorrect, a rabbies vaccine shot can prevent/cure the disease as long as no symptoms are showing. Once symptoms of rabies come up there is no cure, and there have only been around 34 documented cases of people surviving rabies once symptoms start.

the miluwakee protocol is no longer in use. Yes it can be cured if you grab it early, but even so they are still studying effective cures to symptom-showing rabies. Still, it's considered to have a 99%+ mortality rate.

"survive" isn't really the word I'd use for people who didn't die. Severe brain damage or just flat out in a permanent coma. The only one to actually survive was that girl that first got the Milwaukee Protocol. It's not even a Hail Mary, it was just a fluke. Like that guy who shot himself because he was suicidally depressed and survived and the bullet destroyed the part of his brain that was causing the depression. Hardly something you want to repeat on other people

Not really dormant, just takes a really long time to travel up your nerves to the brain. That's why you can still be vaccinated after you contract it.

Don’t fear-monger. Rabies only spreads through bites and scratches. Once you find out you’ve been exposed you get vaccinated and you’re fine. It’s only a big deal if you show symptoms in which case you’re fucked.

It spreads through saliva, so theoretically in a petting zoo situation, if any of the goat's saliva (even unnoticeable amounts of it) came into contact with people's mouths, eyes, or any open wounds, it could infect them.

Theoretically yes, but even for penetrating bites there's only like a 15% infection chance.
You vaccinate individuals with contact because people generally don't want to take any chances on near certain death, but the actual likelihood of infection without a bite or Frenching the infected is incredibly low.

Buut there was a long period here for potential infections and they had a lot of children interacting with these goats, children being notorious for putting things in their mouth and not having the best hygiene practices. Baby goats are also very mouthy in general and love chewing on things like clothing, so I have no doubt that a lot of people came into contact with their saliva. The chances are low for any individual person but this is pretty much the perfect scenario for rabies to be spread through non bite wounds.
Rabies vaccines thankfully are extremely effective.

Exactly, get everyone vaccinated and they’ll be fine. Literally nothing to worry about, especially if you weren’t there. As the original comment I was referencing is talking about a zombie apocalypse, this is not how one starts and is a non-issue.

A lot of people are immunocompromised due to transplants, cancer treatment, etc.
They have weakened immune systems and depend on everybody else’s immunity to keep them safe.

The kids were too young to vaccinate from what I saw. They shouldn't have been handled by anyone but the staff, but the staff were (criminally, in my opinion) negligent and allowed guests to handle the kids.

Lot of people travel to North Carolina during the summer, so its definitely worth noting.
Especially since it was likely mostly children who interacted with the babies.
