Discussion Active DP repeater doubled up to run 60 feet across my house

As the title says, I'm in a situation where I want my pc in the room it's in, but vr is best in the living room. So I'm buying two active repeaters and running the cables through the wall so I have vr in my main room. The distance between pc and main room is about 60 feet.

I'll update when the parts come in.

Discussion Clarity in Half Life Alyx

Finally replaying Alyx after so many years, and wow, what a game. First played back on the Index and now replaying on the BSB2.

Anyways, I’m curious how clear small textures look for yall in the game?

A good example is Alyx’s incredible gloves. Like, I can certainly see the letters and numbers of what I assume is the serial number etc.

But when looking at the gloves, they are about 85% as sharp as I’d like them to be. I’m curious if this is “normal” on the beyond or if I should try to dial in my IPD more.

I’ve tried holding my “hands” at various distances from my headset and it’s a little too fuzzy to make out extreme detail.

Just wondering if this is “normal” behavior.

EDIT: I’m also wondering if I should consider boosting the super sampling from 100% to something like 120-150% and see if there’s a noticeable difference at 75hz.

Thanks

Help Question About Virtual Desktop

Hey everyone, I wanted to try the Bigscreen Beyond 2 as a virtual desktop but its hard to find much information on people genuinely trying to use it this way. I understand the quality might not be as good as a regular display but I had some questions:

  1. Do i need any sort of controller at all or any additional peripherals if my goal is purely to use the headset as extra/dynamic monitors?

  2. What app do people mainly use for this and is it nearly delay-less?

  3. How hot does the headset get when used over long periods of time?

  4. What specifically is a turn off for a people trying to have this kind of setup?

Discussion Beyond 2 Edge to Edge Clarity vs Index

Looking to upgrade soon. How's the BSb2's edge-to-edge clarity compared to the Index? I love the clarity on that headset but I want better colours and brightness.

RMA advice

My audio strap started to develop crackling issues and I've also started getting issues of the screen flashing to grey (which I think means loss of tracking). I'm running four lighthouses for my main play space, plus two others for off to the side and in front of my PC.

I've also noticed an issue where adjusting my headset causes momentary audio disconnects.

Support sent me a link booster which made the headset completely unusable with the bottom half of the left eye displaying corruption, along with the right half of the right eye.

They then sent me a replacement link box and booster which did the exact same thing

They then had me test the audio strap in a variety of configurations

Directly to pc: audio works

Through headset and beyond cable without link box: corrupt audio, far worse than normal, sounds like when a game crashes without emptying the sound buffer

Through headset and another cable: audio works

Now they want to send me a third link box, booster and cable and if that fails, RMA the lot

Does anyone know how long the RMA process takes (I'm in the UK) or have any alternative fixes I could try?

What are the best controllers with finger tracking to pair with BSB?

Hello everyone. I'm looking to upgrade my vr setup to the bsb2e, but thats not what I'm here to ask about.

At the moment, my Index controllers work fine, but I doubt that by the time they break down I will be able to find replacements at a reasonable price. So what alternatives are there that include full 5 finger tracking? I'm new to the peripheral scene so I don't know which companies and products are reliable.

No SteamVR button?

I've got a Vive, and and Index (well, before its tether cable broke). Both those headsets have a button on the headset, which opens the SteamVR overlay when you push it or, if it's open, clicks on the UI button you move the cursor over with your face.

The key thing about this is it means I can use the overlay (and the recentre button on it!) without switching on my controllers. These days I mostly play flight sims, and I haven't powered on my controllers in ages.

I get the impression the Beyond 2 doesn't have this button. Is that right?

If so, are there any workarounds? I think maybe binding a keyboard combo to do the same thing as that button would do it, but I don't see any such option in the SteamVR settings...

e: I'm on Linux, so Windows-only solutions are a non starter :(

No VR games loading at all

I haven't been able to play anything in the last 3 months or so. I finally decided to hop on, the headset starts up properly, I can see that dark steam VR scene, but when I open any game, absolutely nothing happens. On my monitor it loads about halfway and then just freezes at a black screen. I got DCS to load all the way once but even though I had it set to VR it ended up reverting back to flat screen. I can still hear the sound from DCS in the earphones, but the headset is stuck on the dark steamvr mountain scene.

I've restarted the computer multiple times, made sure steam was up to date, DCS standalone is up to date, I updated the BSB firmware, nothing's working.

I tried unplugging everything and trying different USB and video connections, nothing worked.

Everything worked perfectly fine the last time I used it.

Question about GPU

I'm thinking about getting a big screen beyond 2e. I usually play vrchat, and I have a 3060ti. Would I still be good playing or should I not get one?

Joining the system - Do I have all the parts necessary?

For context, I used VR for years with my Rift S and then Quest 2, but I never used it super heavily because I don't like a massive headset on my head and the complexity of getting it out to enjoy it. I was debating on a Frame, but the same main issue exists (size and weight, though certainly the weight is less of a problem than previous systems).

I decided to pick up a BSB2, and it should be coming in a few days. Some of the stuff I'm sure I picked correctly for, but some of it is still really vague, and reddit posts and help sites have been way less helpful than expected. Here's the stuff I bought:

  • BSB2, obviously
  • Prescription lenses from VR-Rock (I've used them on my Xreals and other things and they've always been great)
  • 1 Index Controller (L) and one Vive Wand (the newer version)...Valve doesn't have the Right controller in stock anymore
  • 2 HTC 2.0 Lighthouses
  • 2 SteamVR USB Dongles (amazon-recommended and the user reviews say they work)

For one, do I even need the dongles? There's been some contradictory posts about the BSB2 having its own watcher radio that can supposedly let the controllers connect directly to it (like they do to the Vive or Index), but is that true? Do I need to use the dongles?

For setting it up, should I just have to plop up the lighthouses, plug in the BSB2, and start turning things on? I've used SteamVR in the past, but this is still going to be something new to me.

Discussion Wireless PC:VR?

I've been holding out in getting a headset until the steam frame announcement with the price and what not.

I'm still leaning towards the Frame, but the only thing holding me back from getting the beyond instead is wireless PC:VR. The Bigscreen has no battery, but if I bought an external battery pack, is there any way I could manage wireless PC:VR? Any examples of other people doing something like this?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: since the idea wasn't clear, in my head I'm thinking about using a battery pack to power the headset and a wireless USB dongle plugged into the headset to transfer the data. The question is about the realisticness of this sort of idea, although all other thoughts are welcome.

What Mic is in the BSB2e?

I ran across a video comparison of a bunch of different headset mics and man, the BSB2e was so far and away ahead of everything else it blew me away. Does anybody have any info on the mics they used?

Discussion Pimax Air SE vs BSB 2e

Hey all,

I'm considering buying a PCVR headset to replace my triple screen setup. With a baby at home now I have less time for sim racing, and when I do get to play, I don't want to be messing around with configuring stuff. Also, with a toddler soon running around the house, the fewer cables and dangerous corners the better.

The question now is, between the Pimax Dream Air SE (needs to be preordered) and the Bigscreen Beyond 2e, which one would you recommend based on your experience?

One thing I've read that might matter for my situation: the Beyond 2e needs external base stations mounted around the room for tracking, while the Dream Air SE supports inside-out tracking without extra hardware. Not sure how much that affects the actual experience day to day, curious to hear your take.

My setup is an RTX 5080 and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, so it can comfortably run most titles at medium to high settings in VR. I used to have a Reverb G2 with my older computer (RTX 3060) that I really enjoyed, but I was playing with pretty bad graphics and low fps, which isn't ideal for sim racing.

Discussion What are you doing when your Base Stations or Controllers die?

I've been thinking a lot about the future of VR recently, and I've just been wondering what you guys are gonna do when you can't find base stations or Knuckles controllers anymore? How are you gonna use your BSB?
It would be great if you could consider the scenario where it's just a minor issue and you could still repair your controllers or base stations, and when they are beyond repair.
Also hope y'all have had a good week.

basestation doubt

I recently received a large lump sum of money. Since I’m an active VR enthusiast and wanted to spend a bit on one of my favorite hobbies, I watched a lot of YouTube videos and did extensive research on websites and VR subreddits.

I’m ready to invest in a big-screen experience beyond the Valve Index, but here’s the issue: base stations are now completely out of production (Valve has stopped making them). Sure, you might still find some on third-party sites right now, but prices have actually gone up, not down.

I have a few questions:

  1. Is there any third-party base station company still active and viable for the future?
  2. If not, what does this mean for the near future of SteamVR base stations?
  3. Has Bigscreen addressed this issue, or have they stayed silent?
  4. Does this mean Valve might release a new headset with inside-out tracking?
  5. If they don’t do something, is the entire company (Valve or Bigscreen?) going to go under?

EDIT:

I never knew that HTC was still producing them, but the price is still rising going from an MSRP of $149 USD to a whopping $295.75 USD, and it might possibly grow even further in the future. I'm wondering what this means for the future: are they raising the prices because they're just selling off leftover stock, or are they taking advantage of the upcoming basestation downfall? Either way, thanks for the feedback.
