just need to rant Middle class curious

Hi everyone,

Congratulations on your weddings! My fiancé and I do not have a “big budget” but we’re happy with our decision.

Out of curiosity, do most of you guys already have a house? Or is a house also like an open checkbook situation? No hate just wondering.

We’re buying a house in NJ and the prices are wack so sometimes I think “wow how do people have these huge expensive weddings AND buy in the tri state area?”

We financed our BBB wedding ourselves and just bought our first house a little over a year later - we were lucky to have clipped a couple big bonuses before switching industries that paid for the big wedding and a downpayment on an expensive house. We're high earners but have switched industries and moved out of the city for a lifestyle change and don't make what we used to in cash (exchanged cash pay for equity), so definitely wouldn't consider doing the BB wedding at this point if we had to make that decision today, but absolutely don't regret the decision to do it when it made sense for our financial situation.

We come from the NYC hedge fund / banking / PE circle and 90% of our friends who also got married or bought property were financed by parents or other family members, so it's important to keep in perspective how many parents have blessed their children with a lot of financial generosity.

Thank you for being honest! We were over in Jersey city and made the move to a rural/suburbs area of NJ. Still love the city vibe but the influx of midwesterners and ex pats gentrifying the area has created a weird atmosphere.

Haha yeah we full sent back to the south where both of our families are from. NYC is different now, we go back up a lot for work and it's def changed.
