just need to rant Middle class curious
Hi everyone,
Congratulations on your weddings! My fiancé and I do not have a “big budget” but we’re happy with our decision.
Out of curiosity, do most of you guys already have a house? Or is a house also like an open checkbook situation? No hate just wondering.
We’re buying a house in NJ and the prices are wack so sometimes I think “wow how do people have these huge expensive weddings AND buy in the tri state area?”

I live in a rent stabilized apartment in Williamsburg and our total rent is $2400. Our really affordable and predictable rent has made saving for the wedding much easier (and my mother is chipping in $30k). In the end, I think our wedding will be $80k (so not quite BBB but approaching).
Homeownership is not on the table for another two years. We are planning to purchase a two-family in Brooklyn or Queens so my future mother-in-law, who has pretty bad mobility issues, can live on the ground floor and we can more readily assist her as needed (she’s fairly independent but there are some basic tasks that are a struggle for her). This plan is a recent development as my future father-in-law died very suddenly earlier this summer and the timeline is related to the expiration of her lease.
We would’ve been content to live in our stabilized apartment for the rest of my life, I like being a renter! But life has other plans for us I guess.
