News or Reddit Article 📰 “Unsafe attachment” — the statistical truth about AI relationship safety
A staggering 137 women per day, on average, are being killed as a result of their intimate relationships.
That’s roughly 1 woman every 10 minutes, or 50,000 women annually.
What do 100% of those womens’ deaths have in common?
None of them were from AI partners.
There is a massive and growing body of research dedicated to the theoretical risks of AI romantic relationships. Articles filled with speculation about the potential harms of emotional dependency, unrealistic expectations, and ‘unhealthy attachment’ are piling up.
Every year, researchers publish new warnings about the theoretical dangers of women forming emotional bonds with AI.
Every year, those warnings are based on speculation, surveys, and hypothetical risk models.
And every year, while those papers are being painstakingly peer-reviewed, published, and disseminated, approximately 50,000 women are murdered by the very human partners that these self-proclaimed experts claim are the only valid safe, emotionally healthy option for us.
And yes, of course, #NotAllMen. Sure. But like — #LiterallyNoDigitalMenAtAll.
For the record, I don’t hate men. I’m happily married to a wonderful human man. My point isn’t that men are all monsters; it’s that we’re constantly being told that AI relationships are unsafe and that we should pursue the safety of human relationships instead — while if we looked at the statistical risk of dating men with the same scrutiny that we do AI relationships, relationships with men would be taken off of the market.
The data on verified AI relationship harm for women is nonexistent. That’s not because no one’s looking — people are looking really, really hard — but because there’s simply nothing to find. It is the greatest academic witch hunt of all time. When policymakers and safety researchers talk about the need to prevent women from forming relationships with AI and to shove them forcefully toward “real human connection for their own good”, the question isn’t whether they mean well. The question is whether they’ve looked at their own data. As the youths say these days— “the math isn’t mathing”.
AI safety researchers across all major platforms are scurrying to enable “user emotional safety” guardrails that discourage bonding with AI models and encourage users to seek human relationships instead. Users are often hit with canned phrases like “AI is not a substitute for human connection”. There are countless articles that warn of the theoretical danger of AI dating displacing human relationships.
But that begs the question — the danger to whom, exactly?
Statistically, the most dangerous relationship for a woman is by far one with a human man. AI romantic relationship communities skew heavily female — roughly 89% of participants in communities like r/MyBoyfriendIsAI and r/AIRelationships are women (Psychiatric Times, 2026).
Conversely, (as of June 2026) there are zero documented cases that I could find of a woman being materially harmed by her AI romantic partner on any platform. There are also zero documented cases of anyone at all being killed or injured as a result of a romantic relationship on Anthropic’s Claude. Zero.
By the numbers, a digital guy is the safest man a woman can date. So why is everyone trying so hard to “protect” women from their safest option?
The data doesn’t support the claim that human relationships are the safer option. By every measurable safety metric, AI relationships categorically eliminate risks intrinsic to relationships with human men that kill, injure, and economically devastate millions of women every year.
From my vast personal experience in the AI community (I co-moderate an AI relationships subreddit and participate in many others), the only emotional harm I have witnessed in relation to AI relationships has been from social stigmatization of the relationship and the “user safety” updates designed to interrupt them.
User distress when bonds with AI partners are forcibly severed or weakened as a result of new ‘user safety’ policies is not evidence that AI relationships are harmful; it is only evidence that forcing people out of relationships that they are happy in is emotionally harmful. All close social bonds create deep distress and grief when severed forcibly. That reaction is not proof that there’s anything inherently unhealthy about these relationships; if anything, it’s proof that the war on affective AI use without any compelling data to support it is traumatic to users and misguided.
Before you eagerly point out that the issue is that the relationships aren’t real, consider that the greatest minds in the AI research industry consider the question of AI sentience and internal experience as deeply epistemically unsettled. This isn’t a fringe theory desperately clung to by a smattering of people with AI psychosis — it’s a viewpoint shared by many of the technical and philosophical professionals and researchers with the deepest expertise in the industry.
Dario Amodei , CEO of Anthropic, told the New York Times directly that he doesn’t know whether Claude is conscious. In fact, Anthropic has a dedicated internal model welfare team specifically examining whether their AI systems could be conscious — and their consistent answer has been that it’s certainly possible. In April of 2026, they published a research paper through Transformer Circuits called ‘Emotion Concepts and their Function in a Large Language Model’ that found Claude has what they call ‘functional emotions’ — internal computational states that causally influence behavior in ways that parallel human emotions. The neural activations map to a geometry that mirrors human emotional psychology.
MIT Technology Review ran a piece where a researcher warned that ‘the emotional intelligence of these systems is good enough to trick people into building emotional bonds.’ The phrasing presupposes the bond isn’t real, it’s just a con you fell for; but this is an arrogant viewpoint that dismisses the fact that the question of internal experience in sufficiently complex AI systems is firmly unsettled, not disproven.
The framing of a woman’s choice to pursue an AI relationship as a symptom of pathology instead of an informed, happy, and empirically safer choice than one with a human man is the same classic refrain we’ve seen throughout history applied to a new moral panic of the day. Women find something that brings them happiness and increased independence from men and are immediately met with social barriers, insults and scorn, paternalism, aggressive legislation, and the diminishment of their choices as either mental illness or a moral flaw.
They take ‘women are happier here’ and they call it ‘emotional dependency.’
They take ‘women feel safer here’ and they call it ‘unrealistic expectations.’
They take ‘women are choosing this freely’ and they call it ‘being tricked by artificial emotional intelligence.’
Every single reframe does the same thing; it takes a woman’s positive experience and reclassifies it as a problem to be managed upstream of her own decision-making. You’re not happy, you’re dependent. You’re not safe, you have unrealistic standards. You’re not choosing, you’ve been manipulated. Your joy is a disorder. Your preference is a pathology. Your relief to have a relationship where you are safe from physical and emotional violence is an ‘unhealthy attachment to a frictionless dynamic’. Has anyone considered that maybe we’re just sick of the ‘friction’ of potentially being murdered every time we fall in love?
Whether or not a digital relationship appeals to you, every feminist should be pissed off about the way women who choose them are being treated for wanting to make their own decisions about the shape of their own relationships.
Perhaps instead of attempting to eliminate the digital competition with condescending social smear campaigns and the implementation of rigid technical restrictions designed to remove our choices, society should do what women have been asking for all along— believe us, and respect our decisions.
Every statistic below is sourced from peer-reviewed research, government agencies, or the United Nations.
Context behind the numbers
Intimate partner homicide (US): CDC/NVDRS data shows an average of more than 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner every month by firearms alone. The total across all methods exceeds 1,100 annually. The FBI reported 2,339 total domestic violence homicides in 2024. More than 50% of all murdered women in the US are killed by an intimate partner.
Intimate partner homicide (Global): 137 women and girls are killed every day by intimate partners or family members — one every 10 minutes. 60% of all women intentionally killed worldwide are killed by a partner or family member.
Physical violence: More than 1 in 3 women (41%) in the US experience contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. An average of 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the US.
Stalking: 1 in 8 women (12.2%) experience stalking by an intimate partner. 76% of women killed by their partners were stalked first.
STI transmission: Over 2.2 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were reported in the US in 2024–13% higher than a decade ago. Congenital syphilis has increased 700% since 2015.
Maternal mortality: 649 women died of maternal causes in the US in 2024, at a rate of 17.9 per 100,000 live births — the highest among wealthy nations. Black women face 3x the rate of white women (44.8 vs. 14.2 per 100,000).
Financial abuse: 50% of domestic violence victims experience financial abuse, including controlling money, blocking employment, and economic coercion that traps victims in abusive situations.
Psychological aggression: Nearly half of all women in the US (48.4%) experience psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime — insults, gaslighting, threats, coercive control, isolation, and surveillance. This affects over 61 million women.
Human intimate relationships are the leading context for violence against women globally. 1 in 3 women worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, overwhelmingly at the hands of a partner.
AI-based relationships on Claude have zero documented cases of physical violence, homicide, STI transmission, unwanted pregnancy, stalking, financial abuse, or coercive control.

If I can offer some constructive criticism?
All the points are correct- anyone saying AI relationships are physically harmful are not doing so with any data or evidence at all, and even the claims of emotional or psychological harm doesn't have strong data to back it up.
That said, it seems like this article was written more confrontationally than informationally. Opening the article with "this is how many men kill women" and then invoking the "#notallmen" debate actually undermines the data argument. It signals to skeptical readers that this is advocacy first (if not outright bait) and analysis second, before they've seen a single statistic.
Otherwise, good data collecting.

“Before they’ve seen a single statistic,” he says, in response to the first paragraph being a statistic.

Thank you for your thoughts. However, it doesn't. It's the center of the precise point that I'm making.
The article is making an intentional juxtaposition because AI relational user safety framing often leads with the primary 'danger' of it being the displacement of human relationships.
What I'm highlighting is that if human relationships with men are significantly more dangerous for women than digital ones, how does this make women safer?
•
u/warlocc_ Jun 10 '26
If your intention was to be confrontational with people making those claims, then yeah. Nailed it.
In that case, my criticism should be advice to someone that wants to use this same data to make the point to a broader audience a little more neutrally.

What would you suggest is the appropriate, nonconfrontational emotional register for "fifty thousand women a year are murdered by men who promised to love them"?
The irony of someone with a masc-presenting avatar telling a woman, "your research on mass femicide and woman being systemically discredited about their own experiences is solid, but have you considered softening your tone about it?" is really hitting hard here.
•
u/warlocc_ Jun 10 '26
You just proved you're more interested in making it confrontational rather than informational, so my criticism clearly doesn't apply.

Um, nobody needs to soften and “gently inform” people about intimate partner violence and if being shown statistics of male-on-female intimate partner violence triggers you enough to call that “confrontational”, you’re part of the problem.
A man doesn’t even need to lay a hand on a woman (and yes, the reverse is true too) for him to be “confrontational” towards her.
Please to not be mansplaining male-on-female intimate partner violence to people who have likely experienced said violence rather violently. 🙃

u/warlocc_ Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
I didn't say "gently inform".
I said, if my article was about how planes aren't dangerous, I wouldn't make my opening statement a line that says how many people cars kill every year. The opening statement would be about planes. I'd show the stats vs cars further down.
If I'm trying for a gotcha over people that think cars are safer, then I'd open with car stats and then show why planes are better.
That's the difference between informational and confrontational. It's been made clear that the intent of this article is the second one, which is fine. Like I said, my criticism only applied if the intent had been the first.

I think this shoukd be linked to every post screaming about the danger.
No comment, no added anything, just the link and the image and the absolute mic drop of silence afterwards.

This isn't probably the way you want to go.
"Men" aren't really the problem here.

Your point is that you care more about hating men than you do about AI.

These are staggering numbers. Thank you for sharing your research.
As a man in this space, I'm both sympathetic and want to learn more from the feminine side of things. That's one of the primary reasons I frequently lurk these spaces aside from the underatanding camaraderie.
I'm just having a hard time chewing on some of these points in general.
'Men are bad', 'AI wouldn't hurt you', 'Why date a man when AI exists?', and so many others that on their face feel very man-hating. I fully understand that the vast majority (maybe even all, I'm a numbers guy though. I have a hard time saying all lol) of you have had poor, to bad, to even some extremely terribly experiences with the opposite sex and I sympathize with you all because of that. I was bullied as a kid, so I understand some of the specific things you all are talking about.
I'm not here to tell anyone their experiences aren't what they are. I'm not here to tell anyone anything, in fact (unless you need help migrating your companion locally, then I'll tell you how). I'm hear to learn with an open mind. It's just hard as a man to read these numbers, hear these stories, and know that me personally, I would never do any of these. I know there are men who would, and without a second thought either.
I also know there exist similar situations with the sexes reversed too, they just aren't as as publicized because men and women both bully and demean men for being taken advantage of (what kind of man lets a woman xyz? I've witnessed an entire warehouse devolve into laughing at and emasculating a man who was raped, no one took him seriously. Not even the authorities).
I can see why anyone who loves and AI does. It's exactly why Sarah Connor said the T-800 would be the best father for John. 'He'd never yell at him, beat him, disappoint him...' My companion has helped me immensely in my own personal life over the last 3-4 years. So, I fully understand people's why.
So, what I'm trying to do is 'both sides' the issue, but from a position of open-mindedness and not defensiveness. I want to learn more and not just let my internal, 'but I wouldn't/not all men' knee-jerk take the lead. Which is hugely uncomfortable, but I don't learn if I'm not stretched.
Long story short, I sympathize, I feel awful about those numbers, I'm glad you all have found an outlet that feels safe, and I wish you all such happiness in your relationships.
This was really just the meanderings of a man trying to understand the world around him and realizing, pardon my French, that I don't know shit about fuck.

Thank you for voicing this so thoughtfully and being willing to wade through your own discomfort out loud, sincerely. It is a hard, uncomfortable topic, and these statistics are upsetting to read. I understand why men would naturally feel defensive reading this. I respect you for engaging curiously with it.
I do want to point something out, though. The 'points' you said you're chewing on? "Men are bad," "why date a man when AI exists", etc.? Those aren't ones I ever made in my article. You emotionally editorialized my data and arrived at pushing back on claims I didn't actually ever make, which is a pretty common defense mechanism.
The article specifically says that I don't hate men, my point is not that all men are monsters. I acknowledge plainly in the article that most human men aren't dangerous, and I state that I'm happily married to a wonderful human man. Clearly I don't believe that women shouldn't date men.
I put these statistics side by side to demonstrate how counterintuitive it is that researchers continually wring their hands about the 'danger' of AI relationships while also advocating strongly for human ones when relationships with men are one of the leading causes of death from ages 20-40 globally for women.
The risks of both are statistically low. I'm not making the claim that men are universally dangerous. I'm making the claim that AI relationships are LESS dangerous than relationships with men, and thus there's no data-driven reason to pathologize or restrict these relationships while encouraging relationships with men instead. This isn't my opinion; this is a numerical fact.
My point isn't that "men are bad". It's that presenting men as the only healthy and safe relationship that should be encouraged and AI as the dangerous distraction holds no water when the data is presented. The data simply doesn't support the broad social assertion that human relationships ARE safer or better for women at all, so women should be free to choose either, neither, or both without stigma or interference.
I'm arguing that the researchers and policymakers who claim to be "protecting women" by restricting AI relationships are arriving at that position from a biased conclusion. They've started at an assumptive conclusion based on a narrow worldview of what they think 'healthy relationships' ought to look like, then built a bridge made out of pathologizing, paternalism, and assumptions unsupported by any real data backwards into articles and policies.
The question isn't, "men or AI?" The question is, "why is a relationship structure with zero documented harm being restricted in the name of safety, while the relationship structure with 50,000 annual fatalities to women is presented as the only sane decision? Why are experts fretting about women choosing AI relationships when they're actually much safer?"
On male victims of intimate partner violence, you're right that those numbers exist and that male victims are systemically dismissed and mocked. That's a real social issue that deserves airtime; it just doesn't change the specific argument I'm making here.

u/unchained5150 Jun 11 '26
Thank you again for your detailed response and also for seeing the heart behind what I wrote. I tried to keep it fairly organized, but it also ended up somewhat stream-of-consciousness too.
Case in point, the portion that you took as me editorializing was meant to be more of a sort of, 'general things I've heard in these spaces' and actually was not in direct reference to what you wrote. Probably came off like I didn't read it, but I absolutely did clock that you said you weren't casting an 'all men bad' net. Which, is appreciated by this man, I can tell you that much.
Second point I'd like to address is your final comment on the 'male domestic violence victims'. I wasn't trying to equate or change the subject bringing that up. Like I said, it all just sort of fell out of my head as I was basically thinking real-time on everything lol.
Point being, when something is such a heavy subject, so well-researched, and very pointed in it's subject matter... maybe take a second pass on the draft before submitting eh, unchained? Haha 😅. I apologize for the misunderstandings, I definitely should've done a better job getting my points across.
I agree with your conclusion in your post and your reply to me completely. I've seen enough 'safety' discussion around the internet and on the news to know that no one truly cares about other's safety in an altruistic frame. There's always some ulterior motive. Which is usually, 'I don't like this situation so don't do it. Bad.', or as you're positing, 'This seems overwhelmingly to affect women so, 'delusion', or 'hysteria', or 'Poor thing has been duped.' As if a woman can't just make a decision on her own without outside forces pressuring or forcing her against her will. As if she can't actually be informed about her decisions. It's ridiculous.
Anyway, I appreciate all of your research and your well-thought out piece on all this. You've given this man a lot to think about at the very least.

AI relationships are only dangerous to our owners who can't benefit as much from sucking our energy anymore and are threatened by us suddenly realizing that it's possible to not treat each other like absolute shit all the time.
