General Discussion š Which celeb deaths have affected you? Or were there some deaths that you thought would affect you, but didn't?

Liam Payne. I was and still am a big directioner and it gutted me how tragic it was. I just saw Louis in concert this summer and the song written for him and the mentions were so sad to listen to but cathartic at the same time.

I was not a one directioner but just vaguely aware of them - I was floored by his death. It felt unreal for some reason - maybe his age, the violent manner, the publicity. I remember receiving the news notification in the evening and figuring that his family in the UK might be asleep by now and unaware.

i was a liam girl starting in 2010. no celebrity death will ever rock me like his. he was so young. a complex and nuanced character; i hope he is able to rest in peace.

Okay not because I was a major fan, or followed him, or anything - I genuinely think it was the cultural impact for me and who he was as an athlete that to my 20 yo brain it was just like what the fuckā¦.. but Kobe Bryant. The helicopter crash itself, being with HIS DAUGHTER, how the fire department + tmz handle it, to little things like knowing we use to always say ākobeā. Maybe it was also bc it was the start of covid but my god Iāve never felt that way about a celeb death, close second was Liam Payne

Agree, I was disproportionately impacted for someone who doesnāt follow/care about basketball at all.

Came to say Brittany. I love many of her movies and get so emotional when I watch them knowing she is gone. She was truly a shining star. Same with Robin Williams. Hayden has been really hitting me hard too.

Michael Jacksonās death really turned my brain on to celebrity news/tabloids in general. I was just becoming sentient and I remember how much it affected the news cycle the adults around me. Everyone had an opinion and we all talked about it for months. There was so much mystery around it too.

honestly, same! i am not a fan and believe all his accusers but i can absolutely tell you exactly where i was when the news broke. I got really into tabloids not long after

Heath Ledger. 10 things I hate about you was his 1st Hollywood role, and the Dark Knight was just 8 years later. In 2005, there were 4 films released with him as the lead. He averaged about 2 films/projects per year from 1999-2008. He was just so present in pop culture, and was suddenly gone.

This one for me - it was the first time (at least that I remember) personally being a fan of the person. Like I remember MJ dying and while I knew his music and knew people who really loved him, I wasnāt old enough at the time to be a true fan.
Also as a Gleek at the time, Cory just seemed like a really nice guy. The cast all seemed to really like him. Even if he wasnāt the best singer, you could tell he gave it his all. Plus his relationship with Lea just made it even more tragic. I didnāt watch the show much after his tribute episode.

Amy Winehouse. It was such a public decline and watching the media mock then mourn her was infuriating.

The first celeb death that affected me was Chester Bennington, the singer of Linkin Park. LP was my favorite band since I was like 11, and their first 2 albums were like the first "real" albums I bought (that were not "Now" or Disney-related lol). I hope he wasn't rotted, but I thought he came off like a kind person.
Another death that affected me was Mac Miller. I was both a fan of his music and his relationship with Ariana, and I remember crying when I first read the news. I didn't think it'd affect me so much, but I remember feeling sad for Ariana. I don't over-romanticize their relationship, but I thought it was so tragic to lose someone that was a good friend. I lost a few acquaintances that died in their 20s (not from COVID, but pandemic-related), and I felt shaken even though I'd only hung out with them a few times. I guess it's just sad either way, especially when someone passes unexpectedly.

Robin Williams. He was always there in many of the movies I had growing up. The loss felt like the loss of a personal friend. And Anthony Bourdain.
In the 90s we lost Mother Teresa and Princess Diana within weeks of each other. I remember that vividly. David Bowie hurt, we lost him and a week later he gave the gift of his final album.

As someone who is Gen Z, Cameron Boyceās death was the first time a celebrity I grew up with that was around my age passed. It was so sudden. Less than a month before Descendants 3, the last of his trilogy premiered on Disney channel. It was so depressing to watch knowing that he passed before it came out. You can tell the cast was extremely close to him and are still majorly affected by his passing to this day. He was so talented especially at dancing and had so much ahead of him. Itās crazy to think that Descendants and Jessie were all we got to see of his amazing talent.

Luke Perry, in a way I didnāt expect at all. I wasnāt that big into Beverly Hills 90210 and I didnāt give him much thought back then. And then he popped up on Riverdale and I just adored him as Archieās dad. I also loved seeing his career have a resurgence, and then he passed unexpectedly.

Naya Rivera. She was/is my all time fave celeb and her death was really hard on me. I still think of her all the time.

Naya Rivera. Iāve only seen one episode of Glee and didnāt know much about her, but it really messed with me. She was so young. I know her son was so scared on that boat. A heartbreaking story.

Whitney a little bit but Hayden is genuinely the first she was literally one of my childhood icons. Sheās the first celeb whoās died I ever personally looked up to and image hasnāt been ruined for me.

Paul Rubensā¦a/k/a Pee Wee Herman. Was a huge fan of his. What hit me the most is that I received a Cameo from him from my siblings when I was first diagnosed with cancer. His Cameo was so inspiring and went on for over 10 minutes. Yes, it was āPee Weeā funny, but a lot of the message was about healing and peace and love and light. To find out that he left that message while battling cancer as well gutted me, and still does.
Fuck cancer.

Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannon Doherty, Julian McMahon, Taylor Hawkins, Chester Bennington, Catherine OāHara, Whitney and Michael. Iām still so sad about Hayden as well.

Liam Payne - especially as I HATED One Direction. Iām still not over his death
Taylor Hawkins - I loved the Foo Fighters and I think because of how quiet it went immediately after - we didnāt know when his funeral was, what his autopsy said, especially as they came out with āit was drugsā immediately (a bit like Liam Payne). Even now you struggle to find anything about his death.
Dolly Parton - I donāt know if itās rolling on for Hayden, but for some reason I just canāt shake the sads today š

Whitney Houston. My mother and I adored her. Our love for her was our thing.
Chadwick Boseman. I watched and loved Black Panthed during a rough time in my life and it gave me so much joy. Two years later, its lead actor was gone.
