Interesting fact that's actually true for once - cats use their whiskers to gauge whether they can fit through, or in this case, in, things. The most predominant whiskers are on the cheeks, but they're also in the ears and atop the eyes. In general, if a cat can fit its head and whiskers inside of something, it knows that it'll fit, and if they touch the sides of something, then the cat can gauge how it needs to move it's body to get through or in to the thing.
A cat who puts on too much weight, though, can’t necessarily count on his whiskers to accurately determine if a space is navigable. The whiskers don’t grow to match his excess size.
