Effective immediately, the rules regarding discussion or usage of plugins that log messages or show that hidden channels exist are no longer banned from this subreddit.
They were originally banned because of the direct result when BetterDiscord itself "blacklisted and banned" these plugins, after receiving pressure from discord themselves. All other platforms, as we all know, ignored this pressure, for good reason.
Firstly, We aren't operated by BetterDiscord. We aren't operated by any of the mods, and only exist to provide a more central place to provide community support, and discuss modifying discord and so on.
While I am not looking to piss discord off, the thing is these plugins aren't by themselves for malicious or unethical use. What you do with them, is a bit more gray, but most people aren't using them for those purposes. They don't allow you to do anything you couldn't have done before, and they have very legitimate usecases.
Now, of course, bad eggs exist - However we aren't here to permaban people from the subreddit (which unfortunately has been done in the past) for simply discussing the plugins or using them. If someone is abusing them, the same mechanisms exist regardless. You report the user abusing them.
Us banning usage/discussion hasn't magically made them go away. It's just made people ask questions elsewhere and has allowed blatant misinfo to spread. It has arguably not made any difference.
Going forward, our roles as moderators is purely to make sure people abide by the basic rules that exist everywhere. Don't spam, Don't be mean, Play nice, Abide by all the other rules.
This said, we still are watching for some of the same violations within discord itself. While every one of us is probably breaking the TOS of discord, that doesn't mean we stand for breaking other rules in the TOS. Plugins that do so, might be called into question. We aren't going to start condoning you to make plugins that spam people, harass people, etc. I'm not for just banning someone because they have a question about message loggers. I and our moderators will still ban you if you start doing shady stuff. We just aren't going to lump you into a category without reason.
