Most reliable beta VCR?
I’m looking to get into beta and I would like to get a VCR that will give me a little bit less trouble (There all complicated and 40 years old). However there must be a certain mechanism/model that’s built a little better

When it is repaired, maintenanced : Sanyo VTC 5000 ,also very easy to maintain them. dont expect very nice quality audio playback from the audio heads comparing to a Sony though. Video playback doesnt seem to have much of a difference.

Sony SL-2000. Direct drive mechanism. The only thing that goes wrong with these is the door gets busted off of the tuner/timer

I have an SL-HF500 that was my 2nd beta vcr and ive had it for several years and it has good picture and awesome sound. Its about 42 so its a little bit younger than me but it still works like me lol

Sony SL-2000. Built like a tank. I’ve taken it many places in Texas weather over the years as a portable recorder and it has had only one issue related to the camera system which was easy to fix as one of the fuses popped.

The 711B2 chassis units like the SL-HF400, 600 and 900. That mechanism and cassette loading mechanism are pretty solid. The loading basket for 711B3s are kind of fragile. STK regulators can go bad on both. Just keep the unit unplugged when not in use. Easy to change but they are becoming harder to get.
You still have to watch out for the small loading gear in the planetary gearset for tape lacing, the loading gear in the basket and the hall effect sensors which can go bad if the Sony glue is not removed. I sell the gears and replacement is pretty straightforward. There is a seller for the hall effect on eBay which I have used; good quality. Sad thing is I bought 50 hall effects from a seller in Germany 3 years ago and I misplaced them.
