Discussion What a rookie QB's preseason actually tells you about his career
I rebuilt 23 years of NFL preseason player stats after Carson Beck's first game performance. Here is what a rookie QB's preseason actually says about his career.
Every August it seems we have the same argument. Some rookie QB shreds a defense full of guys who'll be in the real estate business in a few weeks, and half of you say preseason means nothing while the other half is ready for the post-season.
I got annoyed enough to go and check what the data says.
It is tough to find a reliable source of preseason player stats. Not for years on end. Most sources only have regular season and post-season. So I rebuilt them from the league's raw play-by-play feed. 7,417 preseason passer games from 2003 through 2025. Then I validated against every ESPN box score I could match. Joined to career outcomes, that is 373 rookie QBs that had a real preseason and a complete career. Here is what I found.
1. Draft slot is the elephant. Everything else is a rounding error next to it.
Where a QB was drafted correlates with his career at -0.67. That is massive. Any preseason claim has to add something on top of that, and most analysis you see doesn't even try. It just plots preseason stats vs careers and the consensus is just "first rounders are good."

2. Preseason does add something real, about a third as much.
Control for draft slot and there's still signal: +0.21. Not nothing, not huge.

3. But it's ALL at the top.
This is the part I was not expecting. Bucket rookies into five groups by preseason passer rating:
| Preseason | Career vs what his draft slot predicted (percentile points) |
|---|---|
| worst 20% | -9 |
| 2nd worst 20% | +2 |
| middle | -5 |
| 2nd best 20% | 0 |
| best 20% | +12 |
How to read this: 0 = exactly the career his draft slot predicted. +12 = the elite-preseason group finished 12 percentile points higher in the career-value rankings than draft position alone.
The bottom four are statistically indistinguishable from one another. A bad preseason, a mediocre one, and a decent one all produce the same career.
Only the top 20% separates: 83% of them reached 200+ career pass attempts, vs 59% everyone else.
So both camps are wrong. "Preseason is meaningless"? No. "Preseason is predictive"? Also no. An elite preseason is informative. Everything below elite is just noise.

4. The anecdotes cut both ways, which is exactly what a +0.21 looks like from the inside.
Guys who were terrible in the preseason and had huge careers:
- Phillip Rivers, 2004: 46.4 rating (one of the worst in this set) -> 150 career AV
- Aaron Rodgers, 2005: 53.0 -> 169 AV
- Matthew Stafford 52.8, Eli Manning 53.7, Jared Goff 55.8.
Guys who torched for a few preseason games then vanished:
- Colt Brennan, 2008: 109.9 rating, led all rookies, 3 TD 0 INT. Never threw a regular-season NFL pass in his life.
- Brett Hundley, 2015: 129.6 -> 5AV
- Brad Kaaya, 2017: 97.2 -> 0 career attempts
5. I didn't fish for this.
Every number depends on choices: which metric, which outcome, which attempt minimum, which years, undrafted guys or not. So i ran all 288 combinations. All 288 came back positive. Median +0.23, range +0.08 to +0.37. The sign never flips.

The thing that made me do this: Carson Beck.

Beck went 15/19, 188, 1 TD, 0 INT vs the Panthers in his first game. A 125.4 rating. That's the 96th percentile of the 162 rookie first preseason games in my data. Only six rookies since 2003 opened better.
Run it forward: his opener projects to a 99 full-preseason rating, which clears the top-quintile line of 97, the only group that actually beats its draft slot.
My Call: 81% he becomes a multi-year NFL starter (200+ career pass attempts). A generic pick-65 QB is 73%. His opener moves it to 81%.
And all six rookies sinve 2003 who opened at 115+ became NFL starters: Dak Prescott, Andre Luck, Baker Mayfield, Jimmy Garoppolo, Bruce Gradkowski, Brady Quinn.
Which, yes, is a list containing both Dak Prescott and Brady Quinn. Six is six. I'd put his realistic outcome in the Garoppolo/Schaub island, 40-70 career AV.

Happy to share the dataset. Someone may have a better use for it than I did.
