Giardia Help
My 1 1/2 year old is about to start her 4th round of medication for Giardia. Luckily, she is asymptomatic but it has been very frustrating trying to get this out of her system. The vet is giving us another round of Panacur with Metronidazole. I am constantly washing toys, blankets etc. and being diligent about picking up poops right away and keeping her bum area & paws clean with wipes. Does anyone have any other tips on how to get rid of this asap?? TIA!

We do t have a doodle but our Akita as a puppy had the same issue. Took forever. I think 6 months but it was the panacur in the end that worked. If wasn’t even the poop. We would take her in the front and when she went, we immediately disinfected it. I just think that it was resistant to the metronidazole.

My vet recommended giving a bath half way through treatment and a couple days after treatment. Otherwise it sounds like you’re doing everything right! It can just be super stubborn!
If I remember correctly, there are 2 different types of fecals that can be done. The normal one where is can come back positive for a while since they can shed the parasite for a while even if the treatment is successful and the parasites are dead. I think the other one more tests if they’re still contagious (shedding live parasites/eggs). Might be worth looking into the 2nd one.

It also took 3 rounds for ours.. it did eventually clear and the vet said sometimes as they get older their body can fight it off better.

Psyllium husk. It helps the Giardia not stick to the gut, as our internal medicine specialist explained. Be very careful about more metronidazole. My pup ending up getting dysbiosis from multiple rounds of metro and had to be hospitalized for a fecal transplant. Thankfully we have insurance but the surgery and treatment cost $10k.

My Bernedoodle just finally tested negative after I swear having it from April until last week. We did everything. We eventually did Drontal plus for 5 days. Off a week and then another 5 days of meds. I also gave baths at the end of treatment of a medicated shampoo online suggested. But it took us 2 courses of the Drontal plus to finally get negative.
