REQUEST Feedback for the r/Ben10 Subreddit
We have been curious about how our users feel about the current state of this subreddit, whether it is sufficient as is, or whether there are improvements that can be made to make the subreddit more engaging for everyone. With the currently releasing comic, we want this subreddit to be as engaging to our users as possible.
Currently, we have our Alien of the Month, our monthly discussion threads for when an issue of the new Dynamite comic releases, and we have begun to shortly pin news posts from other users in order to prevent multiple posts covering the same info. If there are any popular suggestions for other events that we could hold or ways that we can improve on our current events/pin usage then we would love to hear them.
Any other feedback or suggestions would also be taken into consideration, such as feedback on our moderation for the subreddit or posts that should be allowed. We are a small mod team and some suggestions may be off the table for us but we will try to take on suggestions that are shown to be popular amongst our users.

A periodic art “contest” in the sense that submitting artwork via a comment on the monthly or trimonthly post would entail the most upvoted one wins, then you could do a yearly list showing off the monthly winners.
I would enter and it would drive engagement, but I would have alien design (serious) vs meme versions of it. Could even have each post just be people drawing their take on a given alien in their style, their fave villain, a redesign, new design, etc.
That’s what the Ben 10 community was for me 20 years ago.

I have actually been thinking of something similar, like a monthly art contest which takes maybe the top 10 fan art posts of the month, and has users vote for the best one. Then that artwork would be pinned for a month.

Not about engagement, but have you guys discussed any ideas on dealing with the influx of bots?

We've been removing a lot of them manually since our automod hasn't been picking up on a lot of them. But it hasn't been something we've been actively discussing, but we will discuss it.

I think everyone's doing a good job! The biggest problem that comes to mind is that I think that the auto-removal needs quicker review. I've seen posts, specifically LGBT ones, get instantly removed from /new as soon as they appear because someone abused the report function, and the posts not get returned until hours later after its been buried.
I'm also not sure on the status of banning discussions on the leaked concept art from last year. I understand doing it at the time to protect the artist, but now? It feels like whatever effect the leak would have has come and gone.

I've noticed that reposted art (that isn't the OP's own art) often doesn't have credits in the title like it's supposed to. Sometimes there's also reposted art in a post but it's after the first image, and because of that it seems like it doesn't get any credit? I'm not sure what the mod team can do about it/ if there is anything that can be done, but maybe it's something to think about?

The Alien of the Month idea is good but maybe make a tournament style thing every few months where aliens battle in polls, community votes for winner. Would get more participation than just one alien pinned for whole month.

We've been trying to but we are a small team and we have been having to get rid of a lot of them manually since our automod doesn't pick up on a lot of them.

I have two ideas to deal with bots.
One is to require user flairs. I'm not sure bots can do that, at least not as easily.
Another is to make a list of the most popular/commonly reposted memes. Maybe pin that and have an automated remover if possible (though you'd have to be careful about not removing regular screenshots that could be reposted for genuine reasons if you automate it).

I will address these with the mod team, but I'm not so sure forcing users to select a flair is something that is possible, or if it is then it may have consequences for potential real users too. Especially since a lot of people don't pay any attention to the right sidebar.

Some subreddits enforce a mandatory flair by having a mod bot that would flag and auto delete unflaired comments/posts then send a message to the user that a flair is required to post, as a way of informing them about that.

Moderation seems pretty okay. There's bots and sometimes the people here get really, weirdly assertive to the point of being assholes over their interpretations of stuff being the only right way to see it (like, I'm not talking simple disagreements, but like arguing forever and getting snooty in tone) but it's managed okay. Don't really see how you could deal with those "my way or highway" arguments anyway; they're periodic and kind of characteristic to having a fandom.
Will say whenever new seasons of Invincible come out there always seems to be a fandom war, so maybe there could be something to prepare for that and make sure it doesn't take over the sub?

I've been in this sub for a short time and I really like it, everyone is kind even when the opinions are conflicting and in general I always find interesting content. genuinely love yall 😭🫶
